Title: Pretty shure I'm going to do it.
Post by: Bronze Knight on March 09, 2013, 08:24:37 PM
Hi there every one. I'm Robert, 23 years old, been losing the hair battle since 19. I've always worn my hair short and I'm a big fan of hats, so I may have brought this on myself. Anyway I normally get a regular military cut (which I think is a #3 on top and a #2 on the sides.)  I started to notice around 19/20 that on the very crown of my skull that it was getting a bit thin and not growing anywhere near as fast as the hair on the side of my head. In late December of last year I cut my hair with a #1 all the way around, which I felt was a great improvement in the way it looked. But I still feel as though its retreating.  I cut it again in February with a #1 and it was mostly on the sides of my head that had grown much at all.

I just took these (with a bad cell camera in poor lighting) so you can see what I'm talking about. (EDIT: for some reason I can't see my pictues I don't know if you guys can but I am adding the URL's just in case)

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m266/Kingsbane/IMG_0806.jpg (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m266/Kingsbane/IMG_0806.jpg)

This is the real trouble area/place I notice the most in which its moving back/thinning out.(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi106.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm266%2FKingsbane%2FIMG_0807.jpg&hash=923318397acf059e7022e2835108ede6f77547f3) http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m266/Kingsbane/IMG_0807.jpg (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m266/Kingsbane/IMG_0807.jpg)

I guess it looks like this partly because I keep it so short but it is rather thin. (https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi106.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm266%2FKingsbane%2FIMG_0803.jpg&hash=6cec3e490292e4faa0eee16017851e8a2f1817a0)
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m266/Kingsbane/IMG_0803.jpg (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m266/Kingsbane/IMG_0803.jpg)

So I thinking I'll go bald and see if it works. Only reason I am unsure is due to two things.

1. Head Shape - I don't think I have the right head shape to pull off the bald look.  But I don't know how to describe why I feel that way.
2. Can't grow a decent looking beard. - I tried to grow a beard for about a month. and it looked bad and came in all patchy. While looking over info about going bald I kept on seeing people say that you should grow a beard in conjunction with going bald.

I don't know, I think I'm going to do it at least to try it I just wanted some other opinions.

Welcome to the club.
My advice? Go for it! And don't worry about "needing" a beard. A lot of us here don't have beards.

hey pal...it looks like you still have pretty good coverage.  Shaving it and keeping it short will look great.  If you did want to grow it a little you could try bleaching it, that can look pretty good and conceal the thinning but otherwise try the shave and see if you like it, it will grow back if you don't.  post some pics when you do!

You feel like you don't have the right head shape because you're still nervous and you're trying to justify it. There is no "right" head shape. Also, if you can't do a full beard, try a goatee. You don't need it either way.

Welcome! Yes, it looks like MPB is slowly but surely heading your way....When you shave it, try a thin chinstrap beard first, those aren't too hard to achieve and you don't have to worry about patches....Good luck!

Yeah man go for it.  Clip it short first, say a 1 or 2 guard and if you like that then just keep going down to a razor.  And don't worry about the hats you mentioned, old wives tale.  Its all genetic my man, you had no part in it other than being a dude, so don't think for a second about what if or if u would have only.

I guess it comes down to a few simple questions that leave the options very narrow.

Are you going bald?  Yep.

Are you ever gonna rock the wings?  for me nope

Leaves you with shaving, or a procedure, and if you do your homework you will quickly find that the technology is not there yet for the latter to look good.  If nothing else once you shave it will be done.  Out of sight, out of mind.  You will stop thinking about it every second and wondering how bad it looks, and if people notice.

Welcome mate,

Everyone worries about the "shape" of their head...but truth is 99.9% of people suit the bald look.

A beard takes time.... IMHO if you have a patchy beard it could takes 3 + months to fill out.  But it's well worth the wait.

Let us know how you get on!

Cheers

Yes you are on the way to being bald, so go all the way.  Your head shape is fine.  I never wanted a beard or tried.  I like no hair.

Welcome to SBG !  I like your avatar name !

I think you still have coverage and you got 3 choices that begin with "B" :

Buzz It (let's everyone know you accept the balding)
Bleach It (not so much scalp contrast and if someone asked why, just tell them you wanted to experiment)
Bic It (go smooth for 30 days and you might not want any more hair and call yourself "Bronze Bald")

Good luck ... you are a good looking guy with confidence and we all try to help here !

Welcome to the SBG forum.

You've found this web site and sounds like you are already talking yourself into shaving your head. So give it a go. In the unlikely event you're unhappy with the results, you can grow your hair back to a length you prefer.

I think you should shave it all off... and then wait for the shadow to come.... I reckon you would look really cool and bad ass... thats just my opinion  :)

you've still got fairly good coverage imo, so a buzz cut would look great, than whn you are used to it, try a shave, it will grow ack if you don't..

Meh, that wasn't so bad. Still managed to nick me self a few times. I guess it looks alright; kinda surprised that I don't look all that different. I'm also glad that the bump on my head (back left) isn't really noticeable at all. It is however, a pain to shave around, which is why I nicked it.

Looks good, sir. Well done.  Now 30 days to let it set in.  Any blemishes that you think you see will disappear shortly.  Welcome to the community of truly sly guys!  I bet you'll keep it for life. Bald is beautiful.

There you go !

Now you have crossed into the world of sly. You have a new hobby: shaving your head. And a challenge too: shaving your head for 30 days straight.

Do you like the smooth feel of your head ?

Not sure yet. All my hats feel different.

I have collage classes tomorrow should be interesting to see if any one notices/reacts.

Looking good! Don't worry about nicking yourself. It's all part of the process. I've been shaving my head for 9 months and I still nick myself occasionally.

Don't say anything. Let others mention it first.

Currently my head kinda feels like a fine grit sand paper. Especially right were my hair line use to be.  When I shaved I use some clippers for the big chunks and then lathered up with Gillette Fusion Proglide Shave Gel and used the proglide razer on it. This is what I usually use on my face. Is their a way to avoid this sandpaper feel? Is this more to do with the fact that its my first time and my scalp needs some time to adjust?

I've seen a few mentions of this "headblade" thing I may look into it.

The grit is the stubble. You can avoid it by shaving again.

Looks great! As you said, not much difference...if you want it smoother, after you get used to shaving, shave against the grain (upward on the sides and back, and backwards on the top). As for shadow, it's going to be there until you get a tan.

Sandpaper feel happens. A close shave with the head blade delays the sand paper feel.

Some love the headblade. Some hate it.  I love it. Use it daily.

But take it easy at first.

Yeah I don't want to nick myself right there where everyone can see it before my first day in public with it. Think I'll just leave it alone for now.

Sly works well for ya. Beard or facial hair I think is purely optional. As a lady, I even prefer bald guys who have smooth faces too.

Good luck adjusting! Welcome!

So I got a head blade the other day and I gotta say it makes a great shave. Very close and smooth.

However the quality control needs some work. After I shaved my head I thought I'd try it on my face just because the package said it could. And then it broke!

(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi106.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm266%2FKingsbane%2FB7FFEFF6-BF8C-4C33-9988-59D17D3BB2D1-4124-000003FB0483FFC1.jpg&hash=851ef7612f7243328238b86b13a77fb4dcda3b9a)

Well I suppose I could have tried to return it but that sounded like work... And I would have to go without it for my next shave! Nuts to that I said!

Problem solved!

I think this bald thing is growing on me. Guess I'll keep at it till the end of the month at least.

Your unintentional spring upgrade is actually something I have been considering, I reckon it would help with pressure control.

You might want to try some Head Blade "Clear" solution which I put on after cleaning to close pores and help prevent bumps and heal nicks. Also it makes my head feel as smooth as a dolphin. I love that stuff!
