Title: Damn Bumps...
Post by: davetrostle on June 12, 2007, 02:03:22 PM
I've been shaving my head for a while using a Mach3 and I decided recently to try going against the grain. Well, now my head looks like a golf ball because of all the razor bumps. I have to say this really sucks because I LOVED the feeling of being completly smooth like glass. Do these bumps go away on their own? If so, how long does it take? Should I not shave until they leave? Thanks.

Dave, what is your shaving routine?  Has anything else changed beside the direction of shave?  Do you use a cold water rinse afterwards and Clearhead or alcohol following the rinse?  BTW, welcome to the Forum, Dave!

Dave, welcome to Sly Bald Guys!

Are you shaving with the grain first and then against the grain afterward?  If so, are you applying more shaving cream in between?  Paul's suggestions are great ones also.

The bumps should go away soon.

Shower shaver with hot water, gel, shave with the grain, more gel, then against the grain, cold water rinse, then alcohol.

Hey Dave, I have the problem with shaving against the grain, due to the way my hair grows back in, also for me, I have to shave the way my hair would grow, front forward, back, backwards, and sides, somewhat like combing hair forward,so I have to shave with the grain in order not to get the bumps, if I do go against the grain, I would have to shave twice a day to prevent hair bumps or irritation, I love shaving, but not that much...Hope that helps some

Thanks for the help and nice welcome everybody...

Leigh_12play, it sounds like our hair growth patterns are exactly the same. I guess I'm stuck with the sly look but the VELCRO feel.

Does anyone know if a nice new electric shaver will give me these issues?

Yea, I know about those bumps, lol, I saw the Phillips bodygroom today in the Men's Health magazine, their website is www.shaveeverywhere.com, looks pretty good...give the bumps a few days to go away and vitamin E can help with the healing process I have used shea butter for years now, and use HeadLube after shaving...

I think my problem is I have very thick strong hair. I used a brand new Mach3 and it still felt dull lol. I guess I need something heavy duty. Maybe a weed wacker?  ;D

LOL, make sure to tape your ears so they wont get wacked, yea, thicker hair is a bummer, but it can be managed, you may have to try another type of razor, the gillette power fusion is good, 5 blades, 4 to shave with and 1 to trim around ears, etc, it has been the best for me so far...

It's funny that you mention the Fusion. I have one on the way but now I'm a little paranoid about going against the grain again and damn those replacement blade costs.

I currently shave my face with a double edge 1961 Gillette adjustable and a straight razor. Maybe I'll gave that a try as well. I just don't like looking like a golfball but I LOVED that smooth glass feeling.

If your noggin looks like a golf ball, then in theory you should be more aerodynamic, yes?

Just a thought. Everyone already took my suggestions but I still wanted to chime in.

I have really sensitive skin as well, my head gets irritated easily as well, but has not deterred me from going sly. I recently ordered TENDSKIN, and also use Nivea aftershave balm and my head has never been clearer. I don't know what it is, but I am have seen a 100% improvement.

Welcome and sorry to hear about the bumps.  Wish I could give more advice but I would only be echoing what the other bros have said.

Hey Dave, welcome.  How long have you been shaving?  I have been shaving for nearly 6 months now and after 2 or 3 months of not being able to find anything to work on the bumps, I was getting pretty discouraged.  I cut back from a once a day shaver to a every second day shaver and after a few weeks, they dissappeared.  I use - pretty much from the beginning - a headblade w/sensor trips, headslick and clearhead.  I rinse with cold, cold water.  I can now shave every day and no longer look like Monte Burns.  I don't think I had it so bad as to look like a golf ball.   ;)

DO NOT use the BodyGroom on your neck or above, INCLUDING your dome.  I wouldn't even recommend it.  See my review here: http://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/index.php?topic=431.0 (http://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/index.php?topic=431.0)

Well I got those bumps when I tried the schick extrem flexible blade.. man oh. man..

let it sit for a few days. when I only shave against the hair I have think, corse hair..

gillette gel, and headslick mixed together makes a nice lube for the head I apply all over the head, and then wet it as I go and reaply some as I go...I use a mach3 and to finish it off.. I put on headlube...

The other day I picked up a package of mach3 that where dull.. and got bumps.. so.. could be a deff. blade you got you hands on...

good luck..

If you use Bald Guyz Shave Gel and our Moisture Gel after you will NOT have any bumps at all.

That is a strong statement...I actually use quite a few Bald Guyz products and I will say that I have seen a drastic decrease with them, but I do have a little still. But, I have seen almost a 100% improvement, so I will give you that...

I have to agree and give the BG products a big thumbs up.  O0  I have switched over to their products within the last week and the stuff rocks.  I use the shave gel and the after moisturizer and my dome feels better and more healthy than it ever did.  I haven't purchased any of the wash/shampoo or conditioner yet but from the way it sounds on their web site it's probably some pretty good stuff.  I can't say enough about the moisturizer.  Even if my dome isn't irritated I find myself putting more of it on throughout the day just because of how good it feels on the dome.

You mean you use NOTHING but hotwater?  No gel, cream, oil?  Nada, nil, zip, nothing?  Try headslick, it does a great job.  I shave against the grain and I use to have to go very gently diagonal to the grain on my temples because that's where I got the bumps but now I go against the grain there to and sometimes a couple of passes and no bumps.  I'm happy.  Really, all I'm saying is take it easy, use some lube of some kind and be patient.  With any luck you'll come out on top with no bumps.  Good luck man   O0

Like Lance, I switched to BG products this week and they rocked for me.  I used their moisturizing gel after shaving and I had a big reduction in bumps.  I didn't use their shaving gel because after looking in 4 different stores I couldn't find any at all.  But try the moisturizing gel - I couldn't believe the difference.  Also, I used a Fusion for the first time today and it was the closest shave yet - maybe try one of those?

Yes, as long as I go with the grain I never have an issue with just plain old hot water (nothing else) in the shower. It's when I go against the grain that I start having issues.

Thanks for help guys. I'll give the bald guys stuff a try.

I just wanted to give you guys an update on my situation.

I have changed razors and now my issues are a thing of the past. I'm now using a 1961 TTO Adjustable Gillette "Fat Boy" double edged razor and IT ROCKS!!! I've been using it on my head and face. I couldn't be happier.

Cheap blades, silky smooth shave, no rash, no ingrown hairs and no burn. I would recommend one of these razors to anyone that wants awesome results without paying these rediculous prices on "todays" razors/blades.
