Title: Gillette Fusion: Reuse of blades, with or against the grain
Post by: beardedbaldgerman on March 06, 2013, 10:26:16 AM
Hi guys,

I use the Gillette Fusion and I am happy with the result when I shave against the grain. I do a combination of WTG and ATG at the moment. This takes time even when I shave daily. But when I only shave WTG it still feels sandpapery after. Is that normal? I fear that ATG will cause more irritations.

How often do you use the blades of the Fusion?

Regards

i use a fusion, and yeah, ATG gives an amazing shave, but can cause irritation, so I give my bonce a rest on the weekend, if i can, and occasionally during the week by only shaving WTG, it helps alot, an alum block has really made a difference, it sorts out the red spots and keeps my head grease free all day.

I used fusion and changed cartridges once a week, on Sunday in order to remember.  I carefully rinse after every shave.   More recently I switched to Magnum M5 at suggestion from this forum.  Works as well or better at half the price.

I really find that the Fusion blades give me the best results but the price is hard to swallow at times. I try to switch every 7 days but the "lubricating strip" starts to begin flaking after a couple of shaves. I believe I will try the Magnum M5 on your suggestion.

Not to hijack, guys...but I have a suggestion..after you shave, clear the hair out of your blades and soak them in baby oil....I get an average of 3-5 extra shaves off of the same blade when I do this.

When I used Fusion in the past I had great results using a razorpit to clean the crud off the blades.  Doesn't do anything for DEs but works well on carts I found..

Worth a try. Thanks

How big is the risk to nick or cut myself with a Headblade? Is the result much smoother compared to a fusion?

I've never used a fusion, but I can say that once you get the hang of the Head Blade (especially the ATX), your shaves should take no more than 15 minutes.

Against the grain will cause more irritation initially until your scalp becomes accustomed to it and you refine your technique after shaving against the grain for some time.

The payoff is worth it though. Going against the grain keeps you smoother throughout the day and also helps to cut down on shadow.

Every time I shave, I shave WTG and ATG. That's the way to get the best possible shave but it isn't possible for those that might have sensitive skin.

I use a HeadBlade to shave my head and an M5 razor to shave my face (when I shave in the shower, a DE for the face when at the sink).
Using the M5 and and the HB I can shave my head and face in about 6 minutes.

I've heard of people stropping disposables to extend their life.

A good strop (even for straights) is the ball of the palm of the hand. Calloused hands even better.
