Title: Jeeps and the Sly Bald Guy
Post by: BaldRob on June 11, 2007, 03:27:30 PM
From the "what kind of car do you drive", I know that a lot of sly guys drive various forms of the Jeep with a few of us driving the true jeeps (CJs or Wranglers).

So we're in for a stretch of clear sunny days here in Northern Illinois, so my jeep is currently totally sly also, meaning the top is down and the doors are off.  On the way home, I passed another topless jeep and a bald dude driving it... we actually rode around each other for about 5 miles and I was wondering to myself what a sight that is... two jeeps and bald guys driving both!  O0

Man...just reminded me years ago when i had a jeep (not yet Sly)...had a hard top shell...

stopped taking it off because of the L.A. riots....dudes were throwing rocks and sh*t from freeway over passes....

see how things can get ruined all too fast...

maybe I'll get a new jeep for nice and rainy Vancouver Wa. when i finally make the move!

P.S. Rob DON'T forget the extra sunscreen for that gleamin' dome!! ;)

I don't think you'll see mine on the highway.   :D

But I do keep the headshade in the Miata.   >:D

Wow VFR, what all have you done? I can tell immediately that the suspension is no longer stock.

Only thing stock on it is the tub and engine.  Front suspension is a 5" rubicon springs, with custom long arms.  Rear I cut everything out and went to leaf springs.  I just ordered a custom set of leaf springs last week.  Rear end is an 8.8 out of a Ford Exploder, disc brakes, stronger axle.  Geared 4.56 gears with 4.1 transfer case for that low speed crawling.  Custom full cage and tube work on it, bumpers, all built me yours truly.  I just installed some prp racing seats and 4 point harness.  Tires are 36"x13.5" Irocs.  Fender areas are cut to fit the tires, I didn't want to lift it any higher.

Bad thing is it's been sitting on jack stands, tore a chunk out of the rear axle tube, I have another axle ready to go in, just waiting on the springs.  That and I traded off the tow rig.  Hoping to score me a 95 chevy 3/4 ton truck in the next few months.

This thing gets very little respect until people see it in action.  It's a near stock Geo Tracker, and it does amazingly well off road.  In this picture, my wife is driving.

I always wanted to drive a "real jeep".  I do, however, drive a Saturn Vue which I love.  It is big enough to accomodate my scuba gear and gets halfway decent mileage.

Did you know that bad boy has a Honda engine?

Honda always had innovative products and are probably my favorite Japanese manufacturer.  Saturn has done a good job of imitating the Japanese manufacturers in terms of ergnomics.  Will seriously consider the Saturn Vue hybrid when I trade in my car the end of next year.  Plan B is to get two vehicles-- a real economy minded car for day to day driving and a fun vehicle like a jeep for weekend outings.

We're getting ready to get a newer car before the baby arrives.  The Saturn Vue is an option as it has a lot of room and gets good milage.  The other option is the Rav4 or some kind of wagon.  I guess I have to wait to get my CTS  :-\

They are the only supplier for the Indy racing engines now too.

They build one hell of a car.

I have had my Vue since 2004 (the first year with the Honda, 250 HP engine) and it has held up great.  It still looks like it was just driven out of the dealership and I have put it to very hard use and it has been reliable with no major problems.  Saturn makes a good product.

Whats the camber on that? do you know the stock camber?

On the rear?  No idea what stock is since I got rid of the coils on the rear and reversed back to good old leaf springs.  Much more stable now.  I set my pinion about 1 degree above what the output of the t-case is.  That way it drops a couple degrees during acceleration aligned with the output of the t-case.  Has worked well for me in the past.

Front I'm not sure about, I custom set up the long control arms and set the pinion a little higher then it was, it was maxed out about 4.5 degrees, and really needed to be about 7 with the lift,  but couldn't get to that number.  I'm hoping it is now, won't know until I either take it in to a shop, but I'm just planning on driving it and see how it does, since it doesn't see much street time, I'm really only worried about making it from the trailer to the trail head.

Still waiting on my custon leaf springs though, and I'm choosing new shocks for it now.

Is that the new larger one with 4 doors?  Those are sweet, but I probably couldn't justify the gas mileage which I bet sucks.  Also, I don't know much about the reliability of Jeeps, so that might affect my choice.

I'm not sure about the new ones (being the first model year), but typically the Wranglers (YJ - square headlights, TJ - round headlights) are workhorses that can last 250K miles plus.  So far, I'm on #3 with only a slight tear in the softtop.

Gas mileage is supposed to be better thanks to a 3.8L V-6 and a couple of different gearing options...

And personally, a Wrangler with 4 doors is just plain wrong... I like the Unlimited, but it should only have 2 doors!

See, I'm the opposite, I like the 4 door look...16 city and 19 hgwy miles

I second all of that.  My wife had one and in my opinion, that is the best suv for the money.

I don't mind the 4 doors, but I hate the plastic bumbers.  Yes, I know they're metal behind the plastic, but they look cheap. (Not to say the TJ stock bumpers weren't cheap, bent mine first time on the trail)

That's Rausch Creek Off Road Park.  http://www.rauschcreekoffroadpark.org/

That spot specifically is a glacial deposit called Rock Creek.
