Title: Contemplating going the whole hog, so to speak.
Post by: aussiebloke on February 26, 2013, 04:33:00 PM
I'd previously posted this in the wrong section, so I have rectified my error and deleted the redundant duplicate post. Apologies.

Hello,
I'm Spencer and I'm 26 years old. I've been balding since I was about 18, and recently it's not only receding/thinning at the front but I realized my entire crown is pretty much exposed when I saw a photograph of myself from behind. Needless to say I was mortified, so I've been buzzing my head with clippers without any guards for about a month now. I like it much, much better than worrying all the time about how bald I look.

It is however still really noticeable that I am bald, I've got a horseshoe thing going on as well as the crown being much thinner than everywhere else.
My main concern before I buzzed my head was that I had an odd shaped scalp/head, but now I've realized it's actually pretty regular.

I shave my face with a safety razor (the kind with actual double sided blades) but am wary of shaving my noggin with such an instrument as I remember not so fondly the learning curve when I switched from a multi-bladed system to a single blade on my face.

I'm sick of having to buzz my head every two days to ensure the horseshoe look doesn't become too prominent, and am just wading into the deep pool of the sly bald guy forums, so be gentle!
My wife is exceptionally supportive of whatever I decide, even if I wanted to keep what little hair I had left and grow it out she wouldn't mind.

Apologies for the long winded introduction, I hope to learn a lot here before I take the plunge so to speak!
AussieBloke.

You want to do it. Your wife is on board. What's the holdup?

Step away form the keyboard and go shave!

Yep. It's definitely time to grab the razor and shave it all off. And welcome to the club!

Shaving it down will eliminate any horseshoe and demonstrates that you are in control.

No reason you have to use a DE on your scalp ... go with something which demands a bit less skill.

Prepare to be further amazed.

Now ... will there be anyone remaining in Aussie-land who is not sly?

And your point is?

Why this dithering on the threshold?  It's clear that you want to shave it slick.

Ming orders you to do it.  Defy His command at your own risk.

Will you be happy with the result?  And DE is not required for shaving; whatever works is OK.  Of course you will be satisfied.  Or else!

Welcome mate,

There is quite the growing contingent of Aussies here!

Deffinatley shave it. Regardless of what razor you use slow and steady until your used to it. There are many who DE shave also, if your technique is solid then you should be fine.

Let is know how you get on.

I'm overwhelmed with the amazing responses and support here. Thank you all so much.  :)

It's not really a question of if I'll shave it now, more when. I've a little free time this Saturday in between playing taxi for my Son so perhaps I'll go buy a good disposable razor and give it a whirl. I am aprehensive but can see that I'm bound to love the results.

I'm from Newcastle, N.S.W. I've seen a few bald guys about and it never really entered my mind until I began buzzing it really short.

Thanks again everyone.

Welcome Bloke! The support from a significant other is the best, you'll find it will make the whole thing way easier. Do it!

Just go ahead and do it.   There are lot of shaving equipment available that work, many have their favorites.  Big thing to remember is don't apply a lot of pressure, Not needed.  enjoy your new look and freedom.

Welcome aboard mate!
Can only second what all the guys said, if you're already buzzing it down, shaving is a small step in technique but a giant leap in confidence... so go ahead, you can rest assured the missus will love it too :D

If you're a bit wary of starting with a DE razor, a good disposable'll do to begin with. Lots of hot water, lather well, easy does it :)

Keep ducking in to have a look at the plethora of information when I get two seconds, but have yet to find enough time to physically do the deed! Lots happening in my life at the moment, this weekend is a go-er though. Actually a bit excited! Wifey even said she'd help shave the back if I needed her to.

Avatar is just buzzed right down with beard trimmers no guard. Still stubble.

I've done it!
Boy does it feel fantastic.    8)
I began with a cheap multi blade disposable I found un-used from when I didnt use a saftey razor, and was tentative about putting blade to scalp so began with that. Warm towel to the noggin, lathered with boar brush and taylor of old bond st sandlewood soap as per usual face routine, rinse and lather again. Shaved the dome with the cheap razor and felt it wasnt close enough so braved the areas I can clearly see with my DE - wonderful! I can still feel slight stubble around my crown but I'm sure I'll tackle that more closely with practise. The wife inspected for missed areas and then I slapped on some moisturizer.

So liberating!
Will post a photo when I'm next on the computer, I am currently on my phone.

Congratulations! Although the avatar looks pretty close, nothing like the feeling of super smooth! The glasses and facial hair are a nice touch also!

Sweet!  I will be going whole hog soon myself. Wading into the razor zone I think is fine, little by little I keep getting shorter and shorter.  I think my head is adjusting well each time.  Will be in your spot soon. Great job.

I am loving it! Shaved again this morning and certainly need to buy a nice easy razor to handle. I can use the DE no problems on the areas I can see, but the cheap razor I used for the back and crown was not comfortable. I ended up with a small knick.

Here is a photo, as promised. Do excuse the unruly facial hair, I had yet to shave my cheeks.
