Title: New from Utah
Post by: Tbone99 on January 25, 2013, 12:36:08 PM
I guess it's about time I make my introduction post.  I've been shaving my head for about a year now, but lately I've been on a mission to perfect it.  Somedays I feel like I'm close and others I feel like I'm going in the wrong direction.  When I first started I just used my trusty Fusion, which did an OK job, but only getting 3 (4 if I was lucky) shaves out of a $3.50 cartridge really bothered me.  For Xmas I got a DE razor (EJ89DL).  I use it mainly on my face but I have used it a handful of times on my dome.  In fact my current routine has me start with the DE and then touch up with my Fusion.

My main problem is razor bumps.  My guess is they are a result of having really dry and sensitive skin.  When I just used my Fusion I would only do one pass in one direction - from my forehead back towards the back of my neck.  I have no problem going ATG on the top of my head, but the back of neck (especially the little valleys that lie where my head meets my neck) and by my ears don't like it when do.  I've been aiming for BBS so I've tried on a few occasions to go ATG.  It feels a heck of a lot smoother, but the red bumps make it look pretty bad.

I also got an HB Sport that had mixed results.  I did go ATG with the HB and it chewed me up pretty good, and I haven't used it for a few weeks.  I think I've come to the conclusion that for now I'm just going to go strictly WTG (except for the top of my head) and take things slow and maybe a month from now I'll see what results I get going ATG.  So I think I may bust out the HB again tonight or tomorrow night and take things really slow and not shoot for BBS.  Although I do think that eventually I would like to perfect the head shave with my Edwin Jagger.  I mean, you can't beat $.10 for a blade.

Although I've never posted here, I do want to thank you all for your insights.  I've learned a lot already by just reading all your posts.

Welcome glad to hear that you are here. With the headblade you have to apply little to no pressure or it will cut you up (I don't use it but have been thinking about starting using it myself but I have learned this from other members on here) so take it slow and don't rush. It seems like you have a good idea so hope it goes well for you. O0

Welcome my friend.

I have never had or seen a razor bump before I googled it but if a bump is an ingrown hair then there really is no cure apart from not shaving so close. The razor bump pictures on google look pretty nasty.

Just go WTG and forget about BBS -- that's just for "smoothists". The more discerning gentleman likes things to be a bit scratchy.

Welcome mate.

Shaving pre-shower and scrubbing the head with a loofah after the shave really helped with my bumps in the early days.

Hope you get it to work for you.

Welcome to the forum!
I'm not sure if i got this right, but the razor bumps, you don't get them always, do you?
I suppose they are related to some factor. If you could track that down and then you'll be able to achieve that BBS.

Welcome from another newbie.

I was using a cartridge and a D/E razor and something didn't feel right.

I had a Gem 1912 S/E razor sitting on the shelf so I gave it a go.  To me it just feels right, I do two passes and the end results is great.

It might be worth a try and they are pretty cheap to buy.

Cheers,
Lynchy Snr
