Title: should I shave?
Post by: bella on January 20, 2013, 04:29:39 PM
I have a full head of hair, and I think I objectively look better with hair, but I have always been obsessed with being BALD.   I've been wanting to shave my head since I was 15 and I'm 30 now.

I had the back and sides of my head shaved Saturday and it feels FANTASTIC.  I really want to go all the way and lose the top but I'm also kind of terrified.  I've re-shaved the back and sides twice since I got home from the barber and I LOVE IT.

What should I do?  I'm self employed and don't need to worry about that but... it's a big step to take.

As nearly all the other members in this particular subforum would say: "If you have the itch, scratch it!"  O0  It'll grow back soon enough if you end up not liking it.

Well heres what I say if you love being sly on the sides and back then the choice is  simple go ahead and shave it all off if you love it that much. There are a few guys on here that are bald by choice and they love it so go ahead and shave your head if you love it that much O0

Embrace it. If you really know you love the sides being shaved. Go all bald!

Its not a once in a  lifetime opportunity, you can take sometime to think about it. No one is rushing you.
And remember SBG has a lot of tips that you can study before jumping into it. And welcome!

I have clippers, shaving cream and a few disposable multiblade razors.  Any reccs on how to proceed to Sly?

I have quite long hair so I'll definitely need the clippers.  I figured I'd buzz with the clippers with no guard, then soak my head in some warm towel/shave cream, then just let loose with the razors.  Anything missing??

Buzz it as close as you can get it with the clippers, then wash off the excess hair, then soak your head with warm water, then apply shaving cream go with the grain and then against the grain, wash your head off, and apply something to control  breakouts (I use seabreeze) and then rinse your head with cold water or ice to close the pores. All you have to do is post a picture and your done O0

Okay, I am sitting here with some shave cream soaking on my head.  The first razor only  got maybe 10% of my stubble.  They are 3 blade disposables and I have plenty.

Any other ideas?

Shave it all. Did you soak your head and use pre shave lotions or anything else?

You all are awesome, I'm so glad I finally bit the bullet and did it.  Love it already.

It's clean.  It's smooth.  It's awesome.

It's not shiny though.  Any ideas?  Where do you guys buy your headblade stuff, I've never seen it in stores?

Think I'm a SLY for life convert.  Pics as soon as I find my damn phone!
Title: Re: should I shave?

Go online and search headblades, there should be some sits that have it. And for the shadow theres nothing really you can do. Try baby oil if you want. Or rub ice cubes on your head to make it shine.

It's good to have another shaven-headed woman on the board. A few days ago I watched a movie called THX-1138 where all the actors [100's] were shaven-headed including all the women. It looked great on the women. Should be more of it. Keep posting.

Bella, do you feel freer now that you have done this? This is common for many men but I'm not sure if it applies to women -- but I reckon it must because women must be subject to "the tyranny of hair" just as much as men.
Title: Re: should I shave?
Post by: bella on January 20, 2013, 08:03:49 PM
I feel so much freer, cos I never liked having hair in the first place and just did it cos that's what women do.  Well, guess what?  Women go sly, too!  I just shaved a couple of hours ago and all I can think about is getting my butt to a barbershop for another shave.

I'm in the honeymoon period :@`

Well, I only shaved this long ago:

(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftickers.TickerFactory.com%2Fezt%2Fd%2F4%3B4%3B0%2Fst%2F20121208%2Fe%2FShaving%2BSkull%2BSmooth%2Fdt%2F16%2Fk%2Fd0b5%2Fevent.png&hash=75ce12396089a1c26324d10df2e29ea730111350)
(http://www.TickerFactory.com/) and I'm still in the "honeymoon" period.

I'm starting to think that the honeymoon might be permanent.

Forget about the barber shop though just get a HeadBlade razor -- shaving the head provides a strange satisfaction -- I wouldn't want to give that away to a barber even if they paid me.

G'day Bella, sorry I am so late to the party and missed all the fun!!! But you look great sly  :)

It is awesome that you are a girl, everyone is welcome here and we always love having the fairer sex around, helps keep us in line :P Nah... It's always great to get some opinions from the other side  O0

It is perfectly normal to not be able to keep your hands off your dome, it is also perfectly normal to now be checking your head in ANY reflective surface, mirrors, windows, shiny stainless steel, etc.

I think there is already a topic somewhere about enjoying being sly and all sorts of other awesome topics, so feel free to just jump head on into the fray and have some fun  O0

When using a headblade put little to no pressure and don't go fast and you will be fine O0
Title: Re: should I shave?
Post by: Beardman on January 21, 2013, 12:29:11 PM
No awkward turns either, nice straight long strokes, and as Crusher said, put as little pressure on the blade at all and take it nice and sly until you get proficient with it. i hope you love your new headblade though, they are one of those tools that someone will either love or hate.

Welcome Bella, the look really suits! I agree, heating up the lather makes all the difference, I just chuck my bottle off head slick in the sink full of hot water when I get in the shower, then when I get out to shave the water is no longer boiling hot and the cream is toasty warm. They should make mini microwaves for us baldies!

Like Crusher said, the more you practice the more you get better. Eventually there will be less irritation from your head getting used to it. But by now you probably have the headblade?

Even tho the hb stuff hasn't come yet I think I have a pretty good routine going, this is day 5 I think:

Wash head w/ gentle exfoliant (I use Aveeno facewash)
Warm up some lather, let it sit for a few
Shave WTG, then check for rough spots
Cold water rinse
Rub down with dimethicone (basically diaper rash) lotion to prevent bumps
Shine up with pomade I had for my hair

My skin is generally very sensitive but I've had almost no bumps so far.  I think us gals have the advantage in improvising with grooming products already on hand than the guys might  O0

It's already soooo much smoother.  I'm way more confident as I get used to it, I felt a little like an alien at first but now I feel like my normal pretty self with a new hairdo is all :)

I think I'll be less persnickety about having some gloss once my head gets a little color.

My hair is dark dark brown, my skin is fair fair fair, and it's been WAY too cold for me to go out without a hat here in frigid NYC.   The glossiness is kind of fun anyway, though.

Well you can generally tell I'm bald even under the hats, unless I wear my heidi hat with the two braids down the ears...

Reactions from those whove seen so far:
1 friend: horror
3 friends: I'm going through a cute phase
ex-husband (now close friend): shock, petting, kept asking if I did it by accident
strangers, 95%: ho hum
strangers, 1%:  WTF
strangers, 1%: "Are you Jewish a/o Lesbian a/o cancer patient?"  (I love how my hair means they can ask me personal questions, all of a sudden)
strangers, 3%: Very cool!

My mom is going to go ape and then be very supportive because she'll be afraid it's the sign of a mental breakdown.  Like, she'll be spending days on the internet researching razors.  Good thing she lives 1,500 miles away  :*))  But she will hate it, at least be polite enough to not say so.

The rest of my friends will vary from yelling at me for not conforming to gender standards to being very supportive.

My dog likes it :)  Lots of head kisses... eeeww!

From what I have read razor bumps are caused by ingrowing hairs so dimethicone lotion won't stop those although it can soothe irritated skin apparently. I personally wouldn't be using the pomade if it is for hair. Would you think of spreading it all over your face? If not then why spread it on your scalp just because hair used to be there?

I don't mean any of this in a bossy or negative way -- you are of course free to do what you want to do -- as you will. I am just slightly worried that putting this stuff on will cause you problems that you wouldn't otherwise have.

My dog likes it :)  Lots of head kisses... eeeww!

That's the great thing about dogs -- as long as you feed them they don't care how you look. What sort of dog is it? How about a pic.

Good point about the dimethicone.  I am guessing HB has an antibump product?  Recommendations?  Everything I saw at the drug store seemed aimed for bikini areas and that feels weird to put on my head.

It's not really pomade, it's this hair/skin moisturizer http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=nourish+and+shine&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=3855934011&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1631543071870743447&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&ref=pd_sl_322g7nwg8k_e (http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=nourish+and+shine&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=3855934011&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1631543071870743447&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&ref=pd_sl_322g7nwg8k_e) so it's meant for anywhere on the body, really.  I'd put it pretty much anywhere that needed moisturizer.

I just used "pomade" as shorthand cos "hair skin moisture shine stuff" is a mouthful ;)

Not bossy at all, I need guidance!  After all I would have shaved like 10 times my first day and been in hospital from massive blood loss if I didn't listen to you lot!  :)

The "pomade" looks like pretty good stuff. I'm afraid that I don't know anything much about bumps other than what I have read today online as I've never had one. You say in an earlier post though that you are shaving WTG so I reckon that it would be unlikely that you would get bumps as the hair follicle wouldn't be cut low enough under this circumstance to curl around and "ingrow" assuming that you are unlucky enough to be susceptible to this.

I've got pretty oily skin so I personally don't use any moisturisers or stuff like that but if I found my scalp drying out I certainly would.

Nice dog too.

The HB stuff just came!  I haven't even opened the package yet but I'm excited to see how it goes :)

So....

Best shave yet!  I'm shocked at how smooth it feels.  Wonderful.  Results in new avatar pic.

But I ended up not using the HB after fumbling around like an idiot for ten minutes.  I used my usual razor and got much better results.  I think I'm just getting more adept.

Re: the razor, I think it's a case of me being really used to shaving diverse areas of the body for years and years using the current razor (whatever the latest Gillette for Girls version is), I'm way more comfortable with it.

New area of body + completely new razor format = hot mess.

No nicks or anything yet tho.  Just felt like the HB was doing absolutely nothing, WTG or ATG.  I'll keep it for later, as I get more used to it, but I'll stick with the familiar for now.

The other razor that might be worthy of your consideration is the Rolling Razor:(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg254%2F6268%2Fjan27125338.jpg&hash=a21e3d31c126de8d2c99cef2115cfbe2382219d8)
As you can see from the pic it has 3 blades on each cartridge but as the head is not flat but convex only one blade is in use at a time and I think that the heads don't pivot.

They are pretty cheap and there are good deals on cartridges with free shipping [even overseas]. Website: http://www.rollingrazor.com/home/vt
Have a look at this video that runs for only 1:39. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=1FcCQxlCHBk  It looks so easy. If I wasn't already happy with HB I would be using this I reckon.

It feels great doesn't it! Glad you are keeping up the look!

Did you have the blade in backwards? I just can't fathom how it wouldn't cut lol, mine can take off skin :p

Anyway use whatever works for you!

That is a very valid point. If it was doing nothing at all you probably had it in backwards. you want the blades facing away from the glider/wheels, if that makes sense, because you are pushing the razor across your head. The ATX and convention razors have it facing towards the wheels/handle because you are pulling the razor across your head.

Either way, you are still going to want to use whatever you are most comfortable with for the best results.

Nope, just checked, the blade is in correctly.

I think I was so afraid of putting any pressure on after hearing how gently i need to go with the HB that I probably wasnt even letting it touch my head.  When I've got a few more days under my belt I'll give it another go.

I think that it has a reputation for cutting that it doesn't deserve. It seems to me to be much more forgiving than a disposable razor -- just use about the same pressure as that and it is virtually impossible to cut yourself as long as you aren't tempted to slide it sideways. Part of the problem is that it is so forgiving that it is very tempting to start to do silly things with it.

Haha that is a very likely possibility! That's it. get yourself comfortable with shaving properly first, then give it another go.

I think it is luring you into a false sense of security haha. Give it the respect it deserves and you wont cut yourself, if you start thinking it wont cut you, that is when it will. As long as you are following the rules it should never cut you though. Compared with a disposable razor, where I don't think I've cut myself since I figured out how to use it properly.

Exactly right. It is so forgiving that you think that it is very difficult or impossible to cut yourself and then you do something silly and then it bites back. Hasn't cut me yet and I've had 20 shaves with it -- but I do have to keep reminding myself to not do something stupid like sliding it sideways [which I have started to do a couple of times].

I am postulating that the headblade cartridges are "set" higher than other cartridges and don't shave as close making it safer -- this is by design. It is also why many blokes here don't like the HB cartridges because they want it as close as possible. I wonder how many cut themselves with HB cartridges vs other brand cartridges?
