It's ok, I've heard of Aussies being asked if they are from Scotland too, while they are holidaying in the states...

Oh and anyway, you could be accused of being much worse! haha.

Funny you should say that, BCCNorthants

Whenever I go the US, Americans ask me if I'm Australian. Could be to do with my southern (British) English accent and that many of my forebears where born in or near London.

Maybe to an international ear, there's a similarity between a London/southern accent and a generic Australian accent.

I think Australia is culturally far more similar to the UK than any of our other former colonial brothers and sisters are, but the accents are miles apart.

I have a friend here in Florida who cant tell the difference between a London accent and a Liverpool accent, and once again, to me they're miles apart too.

Julia is in a class of her own... Hearing her talk sometimes frustrates me to know end, because of the way she talks, opposed to the opposition leader who frustrates me to know end because he can't answer a question straight and.... But that is really not a discussion for this thread haha.

Where is she from? I know she's from Wales originally, but where in oz do people speak like that? It's like an Australian accent x 100000000

I think it is kinda like here in the US.. people from different geographical areas can "lay it on pretty thick" if they want to.

My Dad was from Georgia and my Mom was from Up-state New York, so as a kid growing up in Florida, I was very interested in dialect and could imitate different ones pretty easily.

Rob, I agree with you... I'm not sure how your friend can't tell the difference between a Liverpool accent and London accent.  But as it was pointed out, many Americans think anything other than American English sounds the same.  Someone with a South African accent is usually lost in the mix too, but I can pick it out in about one sentence...lol.

I used to know a guy in college who had such a Southern accent (from North Carolina) that some of the girls thought he was Australian.. so he got a lot of "attention".  lol.

I find it curious that there hasn't been a homogenization of a country's population.

Prior to national radio/television broadcasting it seems quite likely there would be little influence on a region's dialect.

But once widespread audio communication became commonplace I would have expected the differences to diminish.

Even though it's been 70 years (or more) I find (in the U.S. at least) the regional languages as strong as ever.

Actually, they can sound a bit similar to us.

Here is a nice little background on Julia, in short she grew up in Adelaide, which would explain her accent a bit, Each state has a slightly different accent, and the city and country accents can also differ a bit too. She is now from the Western Suburbs of Melbourne though, only about 30-45min from where I live.

Here is a link to her political biography:

http://www.alp.org.au/federal-government/labor-people/julia-gillard/ (http://www.alp.org.au/federal-government/labor-people/julia-gillard/)

I can't say exactly were she gets her accent from though because her parents still sound very Welsh, so it has to be a combination of where she grew up, and the people she worked around, I've noticed tradespeople tend to have a more typical accent.

I still think it is put on though, does anyone else think it sounds a bit forced or fake?

I find it curious that there hasn't been a homogenization of a country's population.

I think it has to do with the fact that while they do come in contact with people from a different country or region more frequently, the majority of their interactions are going to be with people that speak the same language/dialect and with the same accent.

I guess another good example would be Europe, almost every country and some regions  can have a very distinct accent and even dialect. And they've been constantly interacting over thousands of years.

I must admit, Ive often wondered if her accent is a little on the fake side. To me it sounds way too strong to be natural. Do other people from Adelaide speak like that?? My brother lives in Adelaide and he's never mentioned a strong accent there

It's been a while since I have been to Adelaide, and most South Australians I talk to are from the country but they certainly have a stronger accent, that could be because they are from the country though now I think about it haha... Hrmmm... I can safely say I've never heard anyone other then actors speak like that though. I've heard some real ocker guys and girls, but no one like her...
