That certainly is but the way they see (even though I don't work there I don't work anywhere right now) is that you can pull the baldes out and stab someone or just leave like it is and put pressure behind it to cut someone. It is very stupid.

Wouldn't surprise me. I don't really trust those security screeners.

Good to know that you can't take axes, dynamite or cattle prods on-board!

i-Pads! Looks like Voodoo might have been correct -- they just want free stuff.

True Story...
On one of my many deployments, myself and another Bro were flying the Commercial Cattle Wagon to Norfolk heading downrange. TSA confiscated our body wash, mouth wash, sunscreen and lotion but let us keep our Leathermans (mil version of a Swiss Army knife),gun cleaning kits, small combat knives!!!  Mind you, we were in uniform (desert camos) flying out of St. Louis... Almost created a riot that day because I think half of St Louis was behind us waiting to get thru as well :-\

I believe it. I'm not military, but not long ago I flew to KC and back and had a similar experience. They confiscated all kinds of stupid stuff, but left my Leatherman and Kikkerman survival tool through as carry on.  :/O

It was at Miami airport

I'd left my kindle in my carry on (which I thought was ok to do, but apparently not). The TSA guy took my bag to one side to search it, and he found the Mach 3 I'd bought in Walgreens on the way to the airport, still sealed and still in a Walgreens bag, but because it was a "threat to passenger safety", it was confiscated.

I seriously think that Voodoo might have been right on the mark here -- there is no way that they are going to throw away those sealed razors. 'Threat to passenger safety' is a euphemism for 'I'll find that useful thank you very much'. I bet they talk about all the non-dangerous stuff they have confiscated during their coffee breaks and have a good laugh.

I'd have to draw the line at letting them take an i-Pad or some such thing though.

well I couldnt argue with him, I was going to miss my flight. I was annoyed though, I cant see how something like that could be a threat to anyone or anything except maybe my own scalp.

Especially annoying because if you check the link that Tyler provided [ http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/prohibited-items ] it says 'disposable razors and their cartridges are permitted'.

Oh well, in future you now know that you are permitted to carry them, so you can call him out on it, if it happens again and hopefully you'll catch him with his pants down and he'll just let you go to avoid embarrassment.

I have been thinking about how this could happen and it is now crystal clear to me that the razors were confiscated because of BBCnorthants's shifty look.

If you look carefully and deeply at his picture it is not hard to imagine him holding one of those razors to an aircraft attendant's head and shouting:

"Turn this plane towards Cuba or I'll shave her head -- I'm not kidding I'll do it?"

Or perhaps
"Turn this plane towards Cuba or I'll give the captain and co-pilot a very nasty shaving nick?"
Can't be too careful.

My wife had a new bottle of hand cream (expensive stuff) in her handbag when going through security. They confiscated it. Hand cream was a threat to the passengers. Might explode.

And on another flight, they took my jar of peanut butter!  It's a liquid they said!

All of this depends on your level of concern and your reasons to have concerns. 40 years ago we routinely had boarding passengers remove their bayonet lenses from cameras, politely "held" straight razors until the passenger reached their destination and, of course, all fire arms-save Elephant guns which were checked separately-were surrendered to security-and again returned at the destination. This was Jan Smuts in Johannesburg and, of course, the airline was South African.

That said, people have little to no idea what passengers feel is "perfectly alright" to bring with them as it's their personal property. One late night on a PanAm flight from Sao Paulo to New York screaming suddenly erupted in First Class when a "pet" Boa Constrictor unwound itself from its owner and slithered along the heat vents to get warm. Beyond safety considerations, there are extreme health risks and not just to humans. There is a green tree viper that has decimated the bird population of Guam and is just one unguarded pallet from Honolulu. The few birds that could be caught were moved to Saipan but only a few species even survive. I will understand a certain level of outrage and security but we brought this on ourselves by having no consideration for others and assuming an "exception" would be made for whoever wanted one.

Yeah but with a good enough aim, someone can still stab a crew member in the eyeball with a ballpoint pen, or grab a wine bottle from a passing food trolley, smash it and stab a flight attendant or a passenger in the neck.

I dont really see how a safety razor can be considered a threat to public safety.

If I was a madman planning to bring a plane down, or to cause mayhem on a flight, I doubt I'd try to do it with a Mach 3.

In addition, from this layman's point of view, several years after 9/11, its probably about time airports around the world started to sync their security efforts. Whats ok at one airport isnt ok at another, and its no passengers get confused and why queues at security checkpoints are horrendous.

I flew from Massachusetts to North Carolina a few weeks ago. It was ok to leave my laptop in its case to go through the security check, as long as the case snugly fitted the laptop, but that wasnt ok yesterday at Miami. The laptop had to be removed from its case.

Wow, Rob, tough break man. What I find highly amusing is that when I returned to Iraq after my 15 day leave back in Summer of 2010, I had a five pack of Fromm Straight Razors......TSA seemed more interested in the Bump Stopper I had in my carry on Alice Pack than the razors. I was asked did I have a prescription for the Bump Stopper and I said, it's not required. I was in uniform and they let me go. But to be safe, on the return trip, I packed the straight razors in the duffel bag and locked it. I guess I got off so easy because it was a fairly slow day at the airport, or the guy just plain slipped up that day....

The rules are very confusing, and they seem to change from day to day, and from airport to airport.

No big deal though, I bought another Mach 3 this morning :D

Sorry to hear of your trouble, BBCnorthants. It does indeed seem like the official may have confiscated it for his/herself. I personally stopped flying years ago, mainly because of the increasing prices/fees, and poor treatment of the public by TSA officials....Of course, I understand some people have no choice.
Still, nuts to air travel!  >:(

I've seen this on TV -- it has decimated the place. It would be unacceptable for this to  ever happen to Hawaii or anywhere else. Still, interesting to see how much the local eco-system can be so easily compromised and so greatly changed.

Similar story, on a small island between the north and south islands of New Zealand, called Stephens Island, every day for a year the Lighthouse Keeper's cat, was bringing home a bird it killed, for however long this was happening the Keeper never thought anything of it, just thought it was an unusual looking bird and left it at that, turns out this was the highly endangered Stephens Island Wren.

This 1 cat single-handedly brought this rare and endemic bird to the small island into extinction.

I hate clarifying facts... turns out that story is not ENTIRELY true... urban legends as they are... Wikipedia give an amazing timeline of events... but doesn't actually comment on the truth of the legend, just that is isn't entirely true.
 Still a great read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephens_Island_Wren (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephens_Island_Wren)

If you visit the island of Guam, you won't see many of the birds illustrated on this page. The Mariana Fruit Dove, Guam Flycatcher, Rufous Fantail, Cardinal Honeyeater, and other native forest birds of Guam have become extinct since the late 1940s, when the brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis) is believed to have first colonized the island.

These snakes are native to New Guinea, northern Australia, eastern Malaysia, and the Solomon Islands. They may have arrived as accidental stowaways in lumber shipments from New Guinea as islanders rebuilt from the devastating effects of World War II.

On Guam, brown tree snakes found dense forests that were teeming with the birds and small lizards that are their natural foods. No enemies slowed their spread, and their numbers mushroomed. The snake populations moved steadily north at a rate of a mile per year from their southern landfall. The forests fell silent in their wake.

Sorry I got it wrong, brown not green but the damage it has done is there and it is literally one pallet away from Hawaii. Just as it got to Guam, innocently but it's there now.

It is a shame that mankind has hastened the demise of different species ,  however do not underestimate the power of Mother(Father) Nature to restore and improve upon what we now have.  We are truly arrogant to think that we can make an everlasting change to our environment.

Quite so -- in the long run everything is fine. The problem is though that we both as individuals and as a species are only here for a short while.

Would be nice to live in a pleasant placed while we're here.

Brown tree snake.... Spent 2 yrs on that rock...or shall I say, coal reef 8)

;....and watch the sun go down on Tumon bay....

"Where America's day begins. Badly."

Dear old Anderson AFB. Out of boredom, a state of being there, the guys would send a crawler over the hump in the field and attach it to a PAA 747 and tow it back over the hump. Such fun looking for it. I never quite knew how badly you had to piss off New York to get sent there....This was in the days of Air Mircronesia and Continental was THE thing. I always wondered what happened to their hotels-most of which were prefabricated and hauled in from Australia. I do know the one on Palau was already suffering from rot of a sort generally not discussed in public.

Sorry, Brown Tree Viper. Thanks for the correction and also knowing what a danger this is. What will Dole do if the Pineapple crop fails?
