Title: wet shaving
Post by: greatnessinc on December 24, 2012, 04:07:55 PM
About a month or so ago I converted to wet shaving. I've noticed a vastly substantial difference in shave quality. Especially for head shaving, I get nearly BBS quality. I was on the fence before but I'm a believer now.

It is the best! If more guys would try it most would NEVER go back to cartridge shaving.

Oh I still use the ATX on my dome but I now use shave soaps instead of canned goo.
I have a DE Merkur for my face.

Oddly enough, after growing a beard back in 2010, I feel like I forgot how to use a safety razor. When I began shaving my head, I found myself cutting myself badly. It became worse when I shaved off the beard for a period of time. As much as i hate spending so much money on them, I use cardtrige razors; however, I use shave soap over stuff from a can.

Wet is the greatest .  I used Edge for alot of years but know a brush and soap .  I am going to treat myself to a couple new DE's soon.

Any tips for getting a consistent lather? And what's the best soap to use?

My tips for consistent later would be:
Stick with one product/brush till you have the hang of it.
I prefer to start with a drier brush (soaked, squeezed, and shaken out) its always easier to add water but you can't take it away.
Also it is probably easier to start with a cream as you can physically see how much product is making it to the brush. (Don't let me put you off soaps though, they are great)
Don't shave with a bad lather, if you made a balls of it, ditch the lather and start again. No point tearing up your face IMO

Which soap??????? That's a ver much YMMV type thing! Here is a list of what I think is widely accepted as decent:
Cella
RazoRock
Mitchels Wool Fat (harder to lather IMO)
Geo F Trumper
Taylor's of old bond street
Proraso
CO Bigelow
Mama Bears soaps
Mikes Natural Soaps
DR Harris
Infamous Arko (some love it some hate it lol, it's a shave stick and super easy to lather)

I could go on for days here, some other guys may chime in with some recommendations. There are plenty of places to order from the Internet.

Hope that helps :)

I'm cursed with sensitive skin so I typically don't switch or mix my products often. I'm currently using a shave soap by Mountain country, I've ordered one by Col clink.
Should I be mixing the later in a separate dish from the soap?

Sensitive skin defiantly makes it trickier.

I haven't heard of Mountain Country, Col C is ok, but there is much better to be had IMHO, But ultimately use what works for you.
Proraso make a line for sensitive skin, might be worth a look!

3 options really,

- lather in a bowl/mug
Start with brush on the soap, swirl your brush round to load it (like 45 - 60 sec). Then move the brush to a second bowl or mug. Continue to swirl the brush around whilst adding a small amount of water as you go, until the lather is formed. Put the lather on your head/face and shave.

- Face lathering
Load the brush like above. Then make the lather directly on your face/head. Dipping the tips of the brush into the sink to get the right lather consistency.

- make the lather on the puck
Basically the same as the first option but without moving to a second vessel.
This tends to use more soap per shave. And I have always found it hard to get the right amount of water.

Hope that helps. :)

I've been mixing directly on the soap.

Cool, well if that is working for you, don't bother changing it up.

Hope you are enjoying the whole experience.

I did some experimenting and determined that the soap is the primary factor in the lather.

I lather on the the puck. I buy VHD or Williams most the time because I can get it anywhere and it is pretty good price. I have used some AOS cream and it lathers up nice but I go with basic soap and work up a good lather and go. I use a SR on my face and a DE on my head.
