Title: Greetings from Canada
Post by: Kervarin on December 06, 2012, 04:06:46 PM
Hello all, I lurked the site about a year ago but decided bald probably wasn't the best look for me. Since then I've been on the fence about it, realizing options are few. I tried it once when I was 16 as a joke and my Mom said I looked like Uncle Fester from the Adam's family.

When I turned 18 my hair line started to recede, and now that I'm 24 its only gotten worse. Lately people have been commenting on it, family and friends even the woman I've started dating recently. Not in a negative way mind you, just "Oh, hair line receding eh?" I'm the same age as this woman, but her parents think I'm 10 years older than her. I'm too young to look this old and its been effecting my confidence.

I looked into all the options, but I got no interest(or the money) for expensive surgeries or drugs that end up causing more harm then good in most cases. I've seen plenty of guys rocking the bald look, I remember thinking how great it looked. So I thought it's balding, or bald... I started by shaving it short with clippers but didn't improve the look by much. After that I decided I might as well shave it right down to nothing, but that's when I noticed the back of my head is a bit bumpy, almost like its got a few speed bumps and fox holes. It makes it difficult to get a smooth shave back there, sure I know no head is perfectly shaped but I'm hoping it's not too horrendous.

So far reactions from people I know hasn't been very positive, but I'm guessing its just because they need time to adjust to it. I'm hoping for some honest feedback and maybe suggestions, this certainly seems like the best community on the web to be a part of when it comes to baldness.

Here's a before and after.

Welcome, Kervarin!

You made an improvement and do appear younger without the balding hair.  You are right, people may need to get used to it.  Some people rarely have positive words, so judge their comments accordingly.  I think you look like you feel better sly, and that is what matters most.  That will go a long way in your interactions with others each day.  Allow yourself to feel the confidence you are experiencing, so others will see it and feel it too.  Your happiness will be contagious, and they will find themselves loving it as much as you do.

Thanks for the support and the suggestions guys! I'll see what I can do with the brows. I've been wanting to switch to contacts for a while now, I'll definitely have to pick some up now. The magnification on these specs seem to shrink my eyes.

Welcome Kervarin! You look younger with the Sly look, I'd say keep it  :)

As a newly Sly guy myself I know the negative reactions are difficult to deal with but you just have to weather them for a while and eventually everyone will get used to it including yourself and it'll most likely become a non issue.

Best of luck  :)

Welcome.

I'll add to the chorus of bald guys that you look really good - but you didn't really expect us to say otherwise, did you?

In truth, I haven't met a guy yet who didn't look good with a smooth scalp.

As for the surface irregularities on the back - I've got them also. You can be obsessive about trying to get every last one of them BBS ("baby butt smooth") or just accept it and get on with your day, which is what I do. It will not appear to anyone that you've missed shaving them - it's only you that will be frustrated.

Reactions from others is a common pitfall. It's a radical change in appearance which takes time for them (and you) to adjust to. It won't be long until it's no longer mentioned; and I seriously doubt anyone who didn't know you "with hair" will give it even a first thought. There will be a moment when you look in the mirror and even you don't realize that you had hair in the past.

Allow baldness to release your inner confidence. You've taken control of the situation instead of allowing hair to control you. That alone says a lot about the person you are.

Enjoy the transition ... it's a great ride. And you've got the look for it.

Welcome to the family mate, you rock the sly look big time man! It's a massive improvement.

As everyone else has said, it's a big change and will take people time to adjust, that's what the 30 day rule is for! It's not just for you, but those around you  O0 Anyway, don't let them get you down, because you look so much better now. You remind me of the sl brother playing bass in my mates' metal band last night \m/

In my honest opinion, you look good w/both. Glasses always enhance the look, not detract from it. Go w/what you feel best with..

Nothing wrong with the glasses -- I'd keep them. Same with the eyebrows. You look good bald and it's sooo nice feeling that air flow on the scalp isn't it? Mind you a big furry hat for those Canadian wilderness adventures that you probably go on every winter will be the go.

Jeez from the photos I've seen Canada looks beautiful -- you lucky bloke.

A much better look for you.  When I saw the first picture I thought you were in your 30's, the new look works for you.  Why not post a pic new with your glasses?
