Hey guys, I'm brand new just found the site about an hour ago. I am glad to find such a great support base for the hairing impaired. I've always known that I would one day have to take the plunge and that day draws near. Just turned 20 this week and have decided that this is the best time for me to finally do it.
What really sealed the deal for me was looking at some pictures of me from a wedding rehearsal (http://imgur.com/CqWRP (http://imgur.com/CqWRP)) and realizing that I didn't have as much left as I thought. I have always aged really quickly, started shaving when I was 11 (not just fake peach fuzz either) and started losing my hairline at 13. I guess I have put this off for so long because people have always thought I was in my late 20's-early- 30's for the last 4 years or so and I didn't want to look even older.
I'm going to do some researching and hopefully in the next week or so I'll be starting my 30 days.

Welcome YG !
From the pic you posted i think this will work you !
What are going to reserach before? Well, if you have any questions you'll find good support in here.
-
Thanks Ben! I just want to find out what the more experienced use in terms of technique and products, before I go in and cut my head to pieces!
-
Welcome to the family mate, I think you'll look great sly O0
One thing you'll quickly realise with your little community here, is that we don't see our hairloss as an impairment at all, but as for the most part "just another hairstyle", and I guess as a bit of a blessing, I mean, once we take it all off, we no longer have to worry about how our hair looks, trips to the barber (unless we want to treat ourself to a traditional shave), the list goes on :D
I'm with Ben, what do you need to research?
After you've had a look around, feel free to come back here and ask any questions you might have, and we will answer them for you, there isn't much that stumps us these days, can you be the first? :*))
-
Thanks Beardman! I guess my apprehension is only because it's been something that has been hanging over my head. But I'm ready to put that behind me and rock a new do.
What I mainly want to research is what razors to use and not to use, any dryness issues that people have (living in Houston humidity does terrible things to your skin). Simple stuff like that.
I look forward to being a fully initiated Sly Guy!

That's understandable ! As Beardman said as well, feel free to ask anything you want.
The most important point is to have a HQ Razor, which was a Fusion for me. You might stumble across that tool on your research.

That's it, your Razor will be your most important tool as well as your cream/gel/soap. You'll find that the top 3 razors we use around here are the fusion, headblade, and then either the hydro 5 or mach 3, but chances are whatever you are using on your face will work just as well on your head.
I personally use the headblade sport, then do any touch ups with a hydro 5. The HB as a bit of a learning curve to it, but I think it is a great (but not necessary) piece or technology, just as long as you remember to take your time, apply NO PRESSURE, and do straight strokes, no u-turns or changing lanes, or that is when it can quickly turn into a bloodbath. The hydro 5 (or similar cartridge razor) is perfectly fine to use as well, and I'd recommend starting off with one of them first, just until your head toughens up a bit and until you get used to the new way of doing things.
I hope that's a nice little kick start to your research O0

Welcome youngun, the forum will definitely be a good source for all the information you need. Let us know how you get on, I thnk it will be a great change for you.
-
Welcome! I think going sly would be great for you!

Welcome.
Just one caution about shaving your head ... you're going to be amazed how awesome your head feels, and even more amazed how awesome you feel about yourself once you become accustomed to the new look. The surge in confidence often takes guys by surprised - and clearly accounts for the high ratio of guys here who are "bald by choice" (such as myself). Wouldn't go back to having hair for anything, and wish I'd done it 20+ years ago.
Welcome. Ask questions, express your concerns, chime in on other people's posts. This is a great community.

Thanks guys! I've actually have a brand new Fusion ProGlide power right now for my face, I just wasn't sure if that was really safe to use on the head as well. I have a few different gels (my brother has really sensitive skin so he had to experiment a little, and he left all his extraneous product when he moved out) and I do have a nice cream warmer for Barbasol style cans. I have really resilient skin and I've never really had razor burn. I'm going to search a little bit, see if I can find somewhere selling headslick or any of the headblades (there are quite a few Walgreens around here, shouldn't be to hard).
Hopefully I'll have pictures as soon as tomorrow. Thanks for all the help!
Edit: That was quick, just did a quick Google and every store in a 20 mile radius supposedly has all the headblade stuff in stock.

I've used the HeadBlade and HeadSlick since the very first day. And I doubt I will try anything else ... very satisfied.
-
I checked your photo.you're a prime candidate for shaving bald.
I'm bald by choice. I enjoy the feel and the look even though I have you shave my head daily, and all over. Tool have an easier time of it.
Save some money on clippers. Just see a barber and ask him to buzz it all off. The get a schick hydro5 or similar and take the rest off. 30 day rule. You'll never have hair again.
Looking forward to you joining the bald guys.
No need to wait.shave it now.

Welcome to the forum.
IMO any shaving foam/gel that you have been using for your face should work well for shaving your head.
Take the plunge and enjoy the experience!

time to convert!

Welcome ! You have made the right choice. And you will look good with the new you ! O0 8)

Welcome to Sly Bald Guys.
You have some very good advice here. Looking forward to seeing a post after you do hte deed.
-
It is time - -go for it - -you will feel better and you will look younger - - - -you will look 20 again - - -and it sure feels good - - -
-
you will feel better and you will look younger
Exactly.
Shaving your head clean is one of the easiest ways to knock a few years off.
-
Not only will you look good sly, you'll enjoy the feel of it. You can shave your head with any good quality razor - do not use the cheap disposables.
Also, do not use the canned foams like Gillette Foamy. They do not provide enough lubrication for a great shave. HeadSlick is good as are other creams.
Welcome to the Sly brotherhood - you'll be glad you joined!
-
It will definitely suit you.
Personally, I would recommend against using a HeadBlade until you've gotten accustomed to shaving your head with a razor that you are already familiar with. You can always try the HB later to see if you like it.
Also be sure to crop your hair as closely as possible before trying to shave. For me, I find it difficult to shave hair that's gotten longer than 3 or 4 days growth. The shorter you start off with, the better.

Welcome to the forum, Gun. There are many threads where you can glean information on everyone's choice of process. You'll be glad that you came out of the darkness and into the light. Good luck.

I'm glad to hear you'll be taking the plunge as soon as tomorrow! I can't wait to see some happy snaps! As the others have said, clipper it down, if you ahve your own set, or go see a barber, then if you are at the barber, you could even get him to finish the deed with a traditional shave, or come home and finish it off yourself. But you are certainly going to love the new you O0

I am officially a sly bald guy now! Had some wireless clippers laying around and decided to go without the headblade today. Turned out pretty good, a few preexisting scarring from some dermitological stuff I had to use for dandruff, but only one cut. I wouldn't have done it without you guys, so I'm really grateful for all the support and advice!
-
Good stuff for taking the plunge Young gun. It suits you. I am a DE face and head shaver but very much pro the HeadBlade which I highly reccomend as it is easy to use once you learn how, and gives you a quick shave when you need to get going fast.

Young gun, you look terrific. Welcome to Sly fellowship & well done on your decision to be a baldy by choice. Now stick to the 30 Day Rule posted elsewhere on this site. You will get used to seeing the new "bald" you and others will, too. Also it will help you get into a good habit & routine of keeping that head smooth & well groomed.
Best wishes,
Bilko.
