Title: Slyette in the making (Holla to SlyGirls?)
Post by: gutsygirl on October 22, 2012, 07:13:44 PM
Hi,   O:O
Hope I'm not crashing the Man Zone.  :)  I'm happy to find this website!  I'm not entirely new to headshaving, as I've been buzzing for a few years, but this is the first time I went below 1/16th inch.

I'm totally returning the shaver I bought today (let's just say BAD BAD EXPERIENCE!) and going to try another.  Suggestions?  I don't want to break the bank, but I want the SMOOTH (not sandpaper-ish) feel with an electric shaver that doesn't take 1 whole hour!

The obvious questions I have to deal with because I'm a Slyette:

Do you have cancer? No.

Are you a lesbian?  No, I'm perfectly straight.

Why would you want to shave your head?  I have really bad allergies to everything outdoors; I've seen an Allergist and an Immunologist, and neither are able to help me further, so to be able to apply anti-itch meds to my head, I decided to go hair-free.  Also helps me manage personal care because with my disabilities it takes less time and I won't get bed head when I'm stuck flat on my back for a few days at a time.

What image/political statement are you trying to make?  I'm not trying to make a political statement.  And while my Mom had breast cancer, I didn't really shave my head for that either (she hates my shaved head, for the record, and wore a wig herself)...I did it for myself.  If there is any statement that needs to be made, I guess I'd just like to say "Women should be valued first and foremost for the fact that God loves all the people He has made and Jesus Christ died so that we may have life in Him.  We can appreciate what we see of God in each other's hearts.  It's fine to be attracted physically, but as people we all need to look beyond physical beauty which fades with time and see that which is eternal."   :@`

I'll try to attach a photo, but it's not great quality because I used my phone's camera.  Nice to meet you all!  :D

Welcome Gutsy Girl!

Nice to have you here. I don't know of any electric shaver that will give you a totally smooth non "sandpaper-ish" result. For that, I think you'll probably need a wetshave with a quality razor and foam or gel of your choice. I realize that a wetshave probably isn't too practical if you're going to be bedridden for periods of time.

Thanks, fellas!

I got razor burn in the back pretty bad with today's fight with the electric shaver....wow that thing was a PIECE OF JUNK!  :(

I'm really afraid of cutting myself with a razor.  Have you guys cut yourself before?  Have you used the headblade?  Or do you prefer an electric?

Thanks for advice!

Welcome to the family Gutsygirl!

Yes we have all cut ourselves with the razor, especially in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it you and your head gets tougher you will rarely cut yourself. I've only ever had 1 decent cut though... and that was trying something that I knew full well I shouldn't be doing... so I have no one but myself to blame :P

I use the Headblade sport, and after I got used to it (yes there is a bit of a learning curve, just remember nice and slow, and NO PRESSURE, and you should be fine). Some people don't like it though, so I think it is just going to be something that you are going to have to give a trial yourself if that is the path you want to go down, personally I think it is the best think I have bought in a long time!

I've used an electric a couple of times and find it takes forever to get close to that razor finish, and even then it doesn't do it for me... so I stick with teh razor. There are some nice wet shave electrics out there though, I've heard a couple of guys praise the panasonic, but again you don't get that baby but smooth finish.

Another HeadBlader here. A bit of a learning curve but really works great. I didn't suffer any significant cuts - key is not to use pressure, just let it roll along and do its job.

Welcome, you are indeed gutsy for choosing the sly side, but only because of a startlingly large number of narrow-minded people. You look great and I'm sure you'll love the feel of a razor shave

Hi GutsyGirl,

Electrics do one thing really well: They give you razor burn. Okay, to be fair, not everyone gets razor burn from them, but I sure do. You have to remember that inside that electric is a set of blades that is either rotating or oscillating at very high speed. Sure there's a screen or foil between your skin and the blades, but those blades having a go at your tender skin hundreds of times in a shaving session is bound to cause irritation. Ouch! :'(

Shaving with a manual razor with some gel or cream may seem daunting, but it really isn't. Just use a a light hand, and don't rush. We've all nicked ourselves now and then, but you'll find the shave much, much closer and more satisfying. I use a Gillette Fusion for my face and head, and I'm pretty happy with it. Good luck!  O:O

Aloha and welcome...it is so great you have joined us. And now I will change my typical greeeting from: "You are looking good like a SLY guy should" to: "You are looking good like a Slyette should." Looks like the guys have already shared some good info with you. I know you will find that we have a lot of fun while treating each other with the utmost of respect and continually offering support on the road to, and after, attaining the SLY status.

Welcome, gutsy. Nice intro. Always good to have some of the fairer sex here to mix up this sausage party.  ;D

It's perfectly normal to slice the noggin when you are new to razor shaving. I know I did. The first time I ever tried, I cut myself so bad, I didn't try again for a few months. The next time, it went much better, and continuously more-so after that. It's definitely worth it to work on getting it right. A great head shave feels AMAZING. Everyone has to start somewhere, and that goes for all things in life.
As for which products work best, it's of course a case of YMMV. I've been using Mach 3 disposables since the beginning, and aside from the aforementioned rough start, I have had no issues.

Welcome to our humble abode. :) If you use a good razor like a Fusion, Hydro 5 or DG 5 with a good shave gel and babby oil you'll minimize your chances of cutting yourself. O0

Wow, thanks so much for the warm welcome and all the replies!  :D  You folks are awesome!

I'm returning the electric razor burner to the store I got it from this week.  Obviously I haven't shaved since so things are pretty rough up top, but the irritation in the back is nearly gone now.  I did enjoy the day and a half of smoothness.  I really don't like this "I do not have any hair yet my head is very very rough and sticking to the pillowcase" situation, so it seems to me that I will be happier either shaved entirely smooth with a manual razor of some type or I will need at least 1/16th inch of hair or so.  This in-between isn't working for me.  I think this is 4 days growth at this point.

I know I need to spend more time reading the forums, but could you give me the 25 cent version for baldies 101?  I read about exfoliating and tried to make my own exfoliating scrub today with so-so results.  You see, I have MAJOR food and gluten and outdoor allergies.  I have severe celiac disease and gluten ataxia.  I CANNOT be around gluten...period.  Also nut allergies and lots of other stuff going on.  So many health and beauty products aren't things I can use.  I normally use just a pure glycerin soap for head, body, and face, which has worked well thus far.

Why do you all exfoliate?
If you had to pick just 1 or 2 common household natural products to use as shave gel/foam/whatever slippery stuff for actual shaving, what would you use?  (Thinking aloe, soap bar, baby oil, etc)?

I've been using witch hazel for years and love it, so plan to stick that for after-shave.  :)

Oh, and I read that using a razor when you have several days of growth can be a bad idea.  So do you guys use a trimmer without guard to keep it real close to the scalp, then shave if there's a few days between razor shaves?

Thanks for the help!  :D

Hi GutsyGirl,

I'm returning the electric razor burner to the store I got it from this week.
"Electric razor burner" LOL. :*))

The sandpaper feel really is annoying, isn't it? ;)
The only exfoliating I do is what happens by me washing my head in the shower. I don't do any specific routine to exfoliate. For shaving, I've used hair conditioner before. It works really well, and it's cheap. Olive oil or baby oil would probably work fine. Soap will work if you make a lather with it. When I do buy gel, I will sometimes by the unscented ones, but not always.

Yes, trying to shave with a manual blade after several days of growth is not fun. It isn't comfortable, and you'll really gunk up the razor cartridge with all that stubble. You really are better off clipping it as close as you can with an electric trimmer sans guard, then taking the blade to it.

I know the first wet shave is scary, but once you try it, you'll find it gets easier. Take it slow, and careful around the ears!  :)

I've known guys that use hair styling gel...a light oil is good, like tea tree or coconut oil if you like smelling like a macaroon. I use a Panasonic wet/dry LA-63 and have been pleased for years with the results. But of course the closeness doesn't equal sharp steel. Good luck.

Slynito, I laughed out loud at the thought of smelling like a macaroon....sounds fairly appealing to me! :D  Long as I don't also *LOOK* like one!  LOL!

I accomplished my first wet shave tonight.  I was scared, but the Mach 3 worked well once I got the angle and pressure right.  No nicks tonight.  :)  I took my time and I'm really pleased with the results.  I don't like the stubble feeling; much prefer smooth or more hair, but stubble stinketh.

Thanks for the compliments and encouragement!  I may not live Sly the rest of my life, as I have chosen Sly for medical reasons (severe allergies) but I'm really grateful for an understanding bunch of fellas!  :)  Thanks.

If I have a couple days growth I go with the grain all over, and then do a full head against the grain. I never let my hair get so long that I need clippers. 3 or 4 days max.

Pity about the relatives, I guess one bonus is that you don't have to deal with their negative feedback until next time. I guess the important thing is that you are still enjoying the look  O0

We don't celebrate Thanksgiving in Australia,  but I do enjoy a good turkey!

My Thanksgiving was enjoyable and I let the many comments about my hair (or lack thereof) roll off my dome.   ::)  Surprisingly!!! my family didn't make a ton of comments about my head during Christmas.  Perhaps since badgering me and telling me it looked ugly didn't make me want to grow it out, they figure NOT badgering me may work.  Shrug; I do it for me, not them.  But I am glad for the respite from negative and undesired feedback.

I was using Mach 3 for a while.  Now I'm embracing my shadow.  I think having the shadow outline of hair looks a bit more feminine, as I see most women with shaved heads going this route unless cancer or alopecia is part of the equation (and for me it's not).  I'll use a clipper to keep it very very short every few days.  Ah my scalp thanks me for its freedom!

For Christmas I received several new hats which is awesome.  I love soft hats.   :@`  A friend also gave me a pretty ear cuff.  I had never heard of them before!  They are earrings that don't require piercings and typically follow the outside border of the ear with decorative wire and/or stones or pearls.  I really love them and they look GREAT on a head without hair to hide them!  Now I want to collect a few!

Tonight I'm going to a semi-formal party and looking forward to dressing up.  Perhaps I'll get a few pics and post them here.   O:O

Hey gutsy! Happy New Year!

Sounds like you had a good Christmas, with minimal familial harassment. That's cool. I wish more ladies would go sly. I actually like it, but then I once had a megacrush on Sinead O'Connor. For some reason my current girl was all sorts of supportive when it was time for me to shave, but didn't find it funny when I suggested she do the same lol

I was at the party having a good time when I injured my only partly good leg just by standing on it using my forearm crutches rather than using my wheelchair full time. Brittle bones = easy fractures. Sigh. So no pics, as I was just working on pain management. And no, I had no drinks. I'm totally sober. :-)

Yeah Gutsy, we all feel for you. But, as you didn't hurt your typing fingers please keep the posts coming. You mean a lot to all of us as can be seen from the enormous number of responses to your posts and their overwhelming positive nature.

It's just too rare right now for sly women [first time I've used that term, this place must be getting to me] to be seen or heard from. You are obviously a strong-minded and independent young woman -- it's really good to see. I bet you don't take much BS from anyone.
