Title: Coffee mans best friend.
Post by: theman on October 15, 2012, 02:50:31 PM
Love my coffee.  I enjoy good roasted and perked.  Like it mainly in the am but any other time also.  Any other SLY members enjoy their coffee, or tea for that matter?

I have heard alot of good things about these machines,  I like the fact that you can make a cup at a time.  But I sure would like them to come down in price.  Cheapest I have seen them around here is about $119.00.  And that was at Sam's Club.

I never drank coffee until about two years ago, never liked it. For some reason, at the age of 50, I developed a love of coffee.

But I freely admit that I am a coffee snob... no Folger's or Maxwell House for me. I buy my coffee from an actual coffee roasting shop and sip it not gulp it.

I never liked coffee either until summer 2010.  I was visiting a friend who got me to try an iced cappuccino, then cafe latte, and within a few months black filter coffee.  I have a Nescafé barista at home and a Dolce Gusto in my office!

Coffee must be made from freshly ground beans.

Bold flavor

Hot.

I love the aroma.

Sometimes if the ground are not fresh, I'll just be for the smell and dump the coffee.

Time to make some now.

Once upon a time I used to grind my beans, but since I bought them in large size bags, they appeared to lose quality as they sat, even unground.

I'm afraid that I have slumped to pre-ground stuff, in small containers.  I find "Folger's" about as good as any, and really not much worse than the beans I used to grind--they have a variety of supposedly different styles of grind available, but they are all "OK-ish" to me.

I am no coffee maven.  I do drink it black and sugarless--about the only thing I put in my mouth besides water that has zero calories.

I've tried a French Press, I've tried a drip pot; I've tried an Italian espresso maker (the kind you sit on the burner), I've even used a percolator.  But a Black and Decker automatic brewer is what I use now.  Time to go get another cup and make breakfast.

Forum seems faster... but still slower than it was.

I love my morning cup(s) of brain lubricant. I too have a Keurig and love it. We bought a few refillable baskets that fit in the machine like a k-cup. You don't have to put in the gray basket thing that comes with it. It makes it much more economical.

I used to be a one a day kind of guy but now find myself having a cup when I get home too sometimes.

I survive on coffee, fortunately my mother in law works for one of the best NZ coffee roasters so we get free coffee, yippee! Always freshly ground if I can, but I do have a soft spot for diner filter coffee from a chipped mug. I have experienced the bad side though, I stayed up for 3 days once to finish my final assignment for uni which was worth 90% of my final year, I drank a litre of espresso and had a seizure... Not the best choice I have made.

The old French people of New Orleans said the description of "good" coffee is: Noir comme le diable. Chaud comme l'enfer. Pur comme un ange. Doux comme l'amour. or Black as the devil. Hot as Hell.  Pure as an angel.  Sweet as love.  It is made in a drip pot with very hot, but not boiling water.  Should have chichory, and hot milk for au lait, never half and half or cream--and it is never served with the meal, only after!.

I luv me some coffee, too.

I'm not too picky about brands, just as long as it's caffeinated.

Here in Miami you can get Cuban coffee on just about every street corner.  For those of you who've never tried it, think of espresso with a ton of sugar added.  It's always a nice post-lunch pick-me-up.

Living in Louisiana, the coffee of choice is Community and it's addictive. When I was a kid, my dad used to fix me a glass of coffee milk in the morning.

As I grew older, I got away from coffee. Now, I drink two cups every morning and none during the day. Just can't bring myself to drink a cup in the afternoons like many of my co-workers do.
I do enjoy sitting on my patio in the morning when the weather is cool drinking a nice hot cup of Community.

Chicory is Cichorium intybus, a dandelion relative with sky-blue flowers, rather a weed, although there are cultivated forms of it, such as endive.  The leaves can serve as salad greens.

The roasted, ground root can give coffee a bitter flavor some folks like.

What is chicory and what does it do to the taste of coffee.?
From Wikipedia:
Root chicory (Cichorium intybus var. sativum) has been in cultivation in Europe as a coffee substitute. The roots are baked, ground, and used as a coffee substitute and additive, especially in the Mediterranean region (where the plant is native), although its use as a coffee additive is also very popular in India (see Indian filter coffee), parts of Southeast Asia, South Africa and southern United States, particularly in New Orleans. It has also been popular as a coffee substitute in poorer economic areas, and has gained wider popularity during economic crises such as the Great Depression in the 1930s. Chicory, with sugar beet and rye was used as an ingredient of the East German Mischkaffee (mixed coffee), introduced during the "East German coffee crisis" of 1976-79.

Since dark roasted coffees can have a bitter taste, the chicory softens the effect.  Our coffee at home is CDM, Cafe Du Monde, and we make a cold brew concentrate and use that with milk.  Like NOLA44, I usually only have coffee in the morning--I have a pretty low tolerance for caffeine and would be staring at the ceiling all night if I drank it later in the day--even cokes do that to me.  Some people, my wife included, can drink a cup or even two and go right to sleep.  When we've been in France, it's always kind of interesting when the cafe waiter tries to give us Nescafe--because "Americans don't like our coffee."  Then, we say "New Orleans" and they bring the high test just like the French are drinking. ;D
Most people who like Italian Expresso also like Chicory Coffee too.

Yes indeed also drank some of it lol.  I have heard different story's of why but not many made sense.  The salt maybe but eggshells?

Some really interesting items have been brought up .  It is always good to learn.  Thank you brothers for the info..

I like Frappucinos....I buy Starbucks and Community Mocha Frappucinos 4 bottles for $5.99.....I only drink hot coffee when working overnight in the cold outside....otherwise, not a big fan. I drink it mostly for the warmth and caffeine, the taste not so much. If hot chocolate is available, I will pass up the coffee.

It's a Scandanavian way of brewing coffee:

Egg coffee is coffee which has been brewed with a raw egg, shell and all. The coffee has a distinct flavor and scent which some people quite enjoy, and as an added bonus, eggshells help to leach the acids from coffee, making egg coffee less hard on the stomach. This unique beverage is found in some Scandinavian nations, along with the American Midwest, and it appears in some parts of Eastern Europe as well. Egg coffee is also very easy to make at home.

To make egg coffee, the cook grinds one cup of coffee beans and then cracks a freshly washed egg into them. The shell is crushed and then added to the mixture, along with a dash of salt and some cold water to turn the egg and coffee mixture into a thick paste. Meanwhile, water is boiled in a heavy pot on the stove; depending on how strong people like their coffee, anywhere from six to 12 cups of water may be used.

Prior to the 30's people used to boil coffee a little too long and the eggshells smoothed the bitterness out.

I can't believe I didn't think about it before, but the main reason the egg shells would work is that mineral impurities in water reduce the boiling point, thus preventing the coffee from reaching the temperature which makes it bitter

This was a common occurrence for me growing up, being my mother loved her (Bustelo) coffee made from there. My father, on the other hand preferred Maxwell House. When I moved out, I wanted one for decoration, to only end up using it at home.

I make my own auto drip................Folgers and ''Chock full of nuts'' are 2 of our favorites. I can recommend 2 more from the ''fast food'' arena..............Burger king uses ''Seattle's Best''..................and a chain around here called ''Bigbys Coffee''.   BOTH are excellent in my opinion. Seattle's Best has an almost chocolate taste to it and the coffee is great. Bigbys  ''in house'' regular brew is fantastic.   Sorry,I  cannot drink decaf.  'gotta have mine ''leaded''.

A few months ago I bought a De'Longhi EC155 15 BAR Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Maker.  I went from drinking between 6 and 8 cups of regular coffee to 2 espressos a day. I grind my own beans, and have been experimenting with different blends.  I have decided that I like the lighter blends;  less bitter and they have more caffeine.  I normally buy whatever is on sale. and I cannot tell the difference between the taste of the $6/lb and the $15/lb brands.  Since I switched to espresso I find regular coffee bland and uninteresting.  I have actually reduced the amount of coffee beans that I buy by well over half.

I agree...grinding those ol' beans does make a better cup of coffee. And which ever way you choose to cook it you got to have boiling water, preferably 100* (212*f).  O0 O0 O0

I'll disagree, Slynito. The actual optimal temperature for the water differs across different brewing methods.

For a French press, for example, 200ºF is best. Any hotter, and undesirable bitter components of the beans are leeched out into the brew.

Gonna also agree, cuz it's very true. It's akin to grinding your own spices before using them in a recipe: Tastes way better/fresher.  As for my arsenal, I use a cheapie electric Krups grinder, and a cheapie Mr. Coffee auto-drip brewer. Don't need 'nothin fancy here to make a good cup o' joe.
These mornings, I'm grinding and brewing San Franciso Bay - Pumpkin Spice. Deeeelicious! Got plenty to go through, cuz I bought a bunch on sale.

Plus one, I don't think any coffee best at 212 degrees.  Take a test--find a really great cup of coffee--then put it in the microwave and zap it to a boil, then after it's cool enough to drink try it, you won't believe that it's the same coffee you put in the zapper!

Not at all, my good man. Sweetness level is determined by me (I HAVE THE POWERRRR!!).
It's just great coffee with a tasteful blend of pumpkin pie-style spices (nutmeg; clove, and the like). Just enough to make it taste really good, not too strong on those flavors.  Oh yes, it makes the house smell VERY good.  ;)

Loved using the French Press for years with fresh ground beans, great invention. But lately I've pulled out the old percolator from my camping gear and make it like Daddy used to. Makes the whole house smell like breakfast time.

Aunt Connie used an electric percolator. Man it made the house smell great in the morning.

Actually, I think it's a Hispanic thing. I remember hearing of a tradition of Hispanics offering a cup to their neighbor to maintain contact. I cannot really quote it as being I was raised in the United States, and the neighbors we had when I visited Puerto Rico were my mother's siblings.

I lived in the Netherlands for a time years ago and the Dutch were huge coffee drinkers.  Java was a Dutch colony and the Dutch were big in the coffee trade.  Coffee was everywhere.  Department stores had coffee bars.  Movies were interrupted for coffee breaks (I'm not kidding!)  Coffee was brewed by the cup, not the pot in restaurants.  There were even coffee spoons instead of teaspoons (coffee spoons are smaller)

I always liked coffee, but after living in The Netherlands, I began to love the stuff!

I'm so obsessed with coffee that it's actually my hobby.   I've always loved it, but about 5 years ago a guy I met on SBG got me interested in roasting my own coffee.

5 years later, I'm on my third roasting machine (current one is a commercial machine) and take apart all of my coffee gear (grinders and espresso machines) making improvements and changes.

But, I have cut back on my consumption (Dr's orders), reducing from 15 cups/day down to about 6, although I sometimes sneak in a triple espresso in the afternoon.

Yesterday was my first day back from work in a week. At first, I fell ill. Then my job was closed due to the hurricane. I normally have at least three large cups a day by eight in the morning (I begin my job at four or earlier.) During my time away, I was down to one lightened cup. Let's just say the caffeine overload did not feel good.

Love my coffee.  I enjoy good roasted and perked.  Like it mainly in the am but any other time also.  Any other SLY members enjoy their coffee, or tea for that matter?

Being a brit here, I do like a cup of tea. In fact several cups of tea before leaving for work in the morning.

Whilst in the US, been disappointing with the coffee which gets served in amercian restaurants and cafes. Always strikes me as watery. Italy and Spain seem to serve up the strongest coffee.

Absolutely. But then I eat marmite which a lot of people find utterly repulsive.

As for tea, drink regular http://www.pgtips.co.uk/ . Just about the most popular brew in the UK. Kettle, warm the pot, pop in a teabag and it's good for a couple of cups.

Yes, it's similar to Australian Vegemite.

You either love or hate Marmite. There's no in between. Even the company which makes the stuff says so.
You get the idea here when they are getting tourists in London to sample it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFhQ1UGTFXc

If anything else crops up which people either love or hate here, well that's also called "a marmite product".

Oi! I can't start my day properly without a couple of slices of Vegemite on toast. It has got to be my second favourite breakfast food, very closely behind bacon and eggs.

I have to admit though, it does seem to be an acquired taste, there aren't very many people outside of Australia that enjoy the taste of it. To us Aussies though it is a staple haha!

I haven't had marmite in years, my grandfather used to eat it, I do remember it being much stronger then Vegemite, and at the time I didn't like it very much, but there were a lot of things I never used to eat that I enjoy eating now.

My first Vegemite.....I can still taste it. For whatever misbegotten reason, QANTAS served it-on toast points-in First Class en route from Perth to Mauritius and thence to Jo'burg. This was decades ago and, one fervently hopes, they've changed their menu. And it would be prudent to avoid in toto the subject of Australian "Champagne". Also served in First Class on the above referenced flight.

I had the great opportunity to be in England two years ago and tried Marmite (as well as some other cool things).  I liked it, but I am usually one who likes things that are different...lol.      I have found that the few times I have been able to go to another country and try something unique to their area, it is hard to find it in the U.S.. and when you do, it doesn't really taste the same.... (is it because of the hype of being in a different place?)   I haven't bought Marmite here for that reason.

I am a coffee fan myself. Having a little Baileys Irish Creme on the side makes it even better.

I wish all my fellow sly brothers a Happy Veterans Day.
Ditto on that brother !   O0

I love coffee, but never got around to reading this.
I finally read through this thread....I'll ignore the post made by a member that should have him banned for failure to follow rules as he has been warned multiple times (just goes to show how tolerant us mods are ... the member knows what he did....I put it in bold for his convenience because he loves bold text) and just give my thoughts on coffee.

Chicory - Like Saint said, Chicory adds a "unique" taste to it. Some love it, some hate it. I love it. When in NOLA, I took in Cafe Du Monde and really enjoyed it. It was a must, since CduM is mentioned in Jimmy Buffett's "The Wino and I Know" (my all time favorite JB song, check it out on You Tube).
Schro's Regular routine - I'll be honest, I'm a little bit of a coffee snob. That being said, I "settle" on buying whole beans from the San Francisco Coffee Company (usually French Roast). I grind what I need the night before (store the rest in the freezer), and program the coffee pot before I go to bed. I love having the house smell like coffee in the morning!! One thing I do is deliver The Lovely Mrs. Schro her first cup o' joe in bed as a wake up call whenever I'm not traveling (I'm an early riser, she's not). Both of us are usually good for a 2 or 3 cups in the morning.

When I'm traveling, I try to avoid Starbucks. It has nothing to do with political reasons, I just don't think their coffee is all that good. When I'm in the Bay Area, I try and get Peet's. SBC is also good.

The Italian's also enjoy there coffee.  LOL , Who ever started it , boy did it catch on.  I for one am sure glad of it .   ;D
Being Italian I know what we are speaking about: actually coffe was born in Arabia and Yemen.
When the Ottoman Turkish conquered Arabia they also imported the use of making andrinking coffee in their capital Costantinopoli, the present Istanbul.
From Costantinopoli (Istanbul) it was imported in Venezia I think around 1600. From there then in Europe and in the rest of the world. In Venice is still open the first "caffé" of Europe, Caffé Florian, since 1615.

Italian coffe, and Turkish coffee from which it derivates, are quite different from what you call coffe in America: here we use to have it in small cups, with or without milk, and we use to have it mostly in the morning and the bar (coffee bar) and after lunch and dinner. Some people have many more coffees during the day. I have only two, one in the morning and the other after lunch (otherwise I can't sleep at night). I have them at my usual bar that uses Illy brand coffe, the best in my opinion.

When made at home people uses the "moka", the coffee pot somebody posted the pic before. At the bar they use special machines.
Lately are being available small machines to make coffe like at the bar at home, like Nespresso, with the coffe made in alluminium capsules, and I find that they make a very good coffe too.

I'm a bit of a coffee snob, I love freshly ground beans, and a really strong French or Italian brew (New Zealand knows their coffee). As I mentioned before, my mother in law get us free beans so the coffee flows freely.

But no matter how snobbish I can get about it, I will always have a soft spot for the filter coffee they serve at diners. Hot, strong and served in a chipped stoneware mug... I love it!

Vegemite isn't bad if I can't get Marmite, but Vegemite is not as strong!

That's why I prefer Marmite - stronger taste. Had some on toast for breakfast this morning. Can still taste it in my beard.

Marmite - I worked with a British woman in Nevis. She invited me to breakfast at her place one morning and served me, Marmite. I knew then why she didn't have a boyfriend. Indeed it does take an acquired taste. Y'all enjoy it!

It's been said that people who eat marmite as a child will always love it, but those who start later in life might not.  I only started at 18 so it's not always true!

Love my coffee.  I enjoy good roasted and perked.  Like it mainly in the am but any other time also.  Any other SLY members enjoy their coffee, or tea for that matter?
Never drank much before, but since 4 months or so I started drinking 1 cup of freshly ground and french pressed hot black gold in the morning and I like it.
No sugar and milk for me, ruins the taste imo.

If I feel like having sweet stuff I go for hot chocolate or cream and cookie protein shake.  :D

Gotta agree on this. My coffeepot is in the bathroom and completes brewing a few minutes before 6 -- the smell awakens me and the day begins! A simple pleasure.

In case you've been hiding under a rock:

"Starbucks lovers who missed the chance to burn money last week on the company's limited-edition gift cards now can snag them on eBay - provided they're willing to shell out even more.

On Friday, the company offered 5,000 stainless steel gift cards for sale online that went for $450 each, but were loaded with just $400 in Starbucks credit. That $50 gap apparently didn't make much difference to many consumers -- the cards, offered through Gilt.com, sold out within six minutes.

Starbucks said the cards themselves cost "more than $50" to make, and noted that they include membership in Starbucks' "Rewards Gold" program -- access to special offers and free food and drinks after customers buy a certain amount.

The company said in a statement that it had no plans to produce any more of the cards, but by Monday, dozens were selling on eBay for hundreds of dollars more than face value. One was claimed Saturday after a winning bid of $1,074."

Hunh. That $1,074 would buy a lot of cups of coffee.

I love the aroma of coffee brewing. I've been known to make a cup just for the aroma and dump the liquid when it g gets cold.

Always fresh roasted beans. One maybe two cups a day is enough. To much upsets the stomach.

I don't like flavored coffees. I like coffee that tastes like coffee.

I freely admit that I'm a coffee snob. No Maxwell House or Folgers for me. I travel about 30 minutes from home to the coffee store where we buy our coffee.
I prefer lighter roasts that are smooth and not bitter. I love Mexican and Hawaiian coffees. The Hawaiian coffees are tough to come by these days in this part of the country.

Would anybody be interested in a coffee scented shaving soap?

Particularly if it contained significant levels of caffeine that could be absorbed through the scalp and face. Although, not so much caffeine that it makes your hands shake -- don't want things to get bloody.
