Well, since being back lurking around the board for about a week now, I have just paid any attention to this area of the forums and it has peaked an interest in trying DE shaving. My problem is that I don't have a clue as to where to start. I don't want to go spend a fortune on a top quality razor and possibly decide I don't like it.
Is there a good entry level that won't break the bank, but also isn't so cheap that it won't give me a good idea of what DE shaving is all about?
I also know that to be "authentic" I need to get a brush, soap and bowl to replace the good old shave gel cans that I normally use.
Any advice, help, and guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.
-
I was reintroduced to DE shaving recently. I purchased a razor through Amazon.com. $35(us) or so will get you a Merkur, Parker, or an Edwin Jaggar, and they will probably come with sample blades. Sally Beauty Supply had a less expensive model that has decent reviews. They probably have a store near you. Shop the internet and you will find a good, affordable price.
An entry level brush, soap and bowl can be purchased at any department store for little more than a can of shaving cream. You will find a great improvement over the gel or foam that you are using now. You can always buy a more expensive brush later.
-
Merkur 34c is a good razor but if you want a longer handle try the Merkur 38c. Theres loads of reviews on youtube of these razors. As for soaps, there is so many to choose from, get one with good reviews. I have an Edwin Jagger badger brush, which probably cost about £15. I've heard nothing but positive reviews about the Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving soap, check It out.
-
I have a Merkur 34C HD and I agree it is nice to use and has a good feel to me when I'm shaving. You can get many of the things you need at good prices on Amazon or if you can handle the excitement of an auction look around E-bay. Also you can find 'how to' videos on YouTube. Best of luck.
-
I have tried lots of DE razors and have settled on Merkur 1904 & 34C. They both shave the same but have a different feel in your hand. They are not very aggressive and perfect for a new user. I would also look into a sample pack of blade from www.westcoastshaving.com The differences in blades are huge. The sample packs are the way to go so you can try them all out till you find your favorite without spending a ton of heard earned cash. Hopes this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
-
A nice DE will set you back about $25 - $40, but then the blades are much cheaper than cartridges like the Fusion uses. I use a Merkur 34C. It's beautifully made and gives a great shave. I also have a Parker Butterfly which is not very impressive - not as well made and gives a mediocre shave.
As to the brush, look for a decent badger hair brush (doesn't have to be expensive) and for the bowl, you can use a salsa bowl or large mug. On soaps, there as so many, it's best to try a couple and see what you like. I've been using a brush to create a lather with HeadSlick and that gives a great shave.
-
Matt... check out the Edwin Jagger EJ89L..... I paid about $38 for it.
I bought the razor, a brush, a nick stick, a tub of RazoRock shave cream, and a large multi-pack of blades for $100 delievered. Not bad to get started.
here's a site to check out:

Hi MattD: That is great that you are interested in DE shaving. I'm gonna tell you a secret that there is absolutely nothing better than a DE shave. Before I started my DE journey... I was exclusively using the Fusion, Hydro5, and Magnum5; thankfully I have discovered DE shaves and I haven't looked back. The traditional way of shaving is the only way IMHO.
As far as shaving the DE way... you will definitely spend around $30-$40 for a quality razor. Initially you will spend more at first but a quality DE razor will last a lifetime. DE blades can be bought cheap. My favorite quality and value DE blade is the Astra SP and you can buy a 100 pack at Amazon for under $11.00. Try buying 100 Fusion or 100 Hydro 5 blades!!!
If you are truly interested get a quality razor first. As far as shaving brushes... you can get a good cheap shaving brush at Target. It is a badger brush (Shea Moisture is the brand). As far as shaving soaps or creams... Mike's Natural Soaps is my absolute favorite. You can go to www.mikesnaturalsoaps.com. It is a quality soap that lathers like yogurt and leaves your skin feeling great.
You can get some great DE blades at Amazon.com like I said earlier but you might want to buy a sampler pack because it provides with more different DE blades.
There are some great vendors like www.leesrazors.com, westcoastshaving.com, bullgooseshavinge.com, and italianbarber.com.
Let us know how your DE journey goes and ask more questions or you can PM me for any future help. Good luck and keep us posted.

I find this very interesting. I am going to have to give this a try as the Fusion blades are so doggone expensive. Thanks for the good info.
-
As usual Warhawk gave some excellent advice. I would add that if you just want to test the DE waters, you might ring up an old fart friend or family member and ask if they have an old Gillette laying around. Like Warhawk said, they last forever and, "junk drawers" all over may contain one. DE shaving becomes addictive and quickly a hobby. Good Luck!

Yeah, I remember years ago my granddad had two. I asked my grandmother about them, but she said she probably just threw ten away after he died and she moved!!! :Xo!

Are there any stores that sell the Merkur Razors I hate ordering things.

Are there any stores that sell the Merkur Razors I hate ordering things.
It depends. Where do you live? With that said... there are no brick and mortar stores (in my area) that sell DE razors except for the cheapo DE razor at Sally's. Ordering on line is not that bad. Sure you cannot get your product instantly but half the fun is waiting for the product to arrive. You feel like a kid at Christmas when it does arrive.

Thanks WARHAWK , never did like waiting at Christmas either ;D ;D Guess I will have to order it. As they really sound cool.

Any one have any thoughts on a Merkur 37C (slant bar)? I hear these give some of the best shaves out there. Using my current DE scares me a little with shaving, seems a little unforgiving on my head considering I always cut myself and get razor burn. I know my technique isn't really there for my head yet, but wonder if the 37C is worth getting. If so, OP you could consider this one for your first DE purchase (about $45 or so); just be careful of RAD, it can get really nasty.
-
I've never used a slant, but I know that Warhawk uses one and likes it...they are very aggressive and good for thick beards. For a start I would suggest a Merkur 34C...check out reviews of all you are interested on the net.

Well, yesterday I was on the other side of town where some friends own an "attic to antique" shop and I asked them if they ever run into any vintage shaving stuff, mugs, stands, razors, etc. He said they do from time to time, and happened to have just had the opportunity to pick an estate house that was built in 1910. They had a trailer full and he knew there were a few safety razors that were in good shape. He's supposed to send me pictures or give me a call early next week once they are able to unload the trailer full of stuff and sort the new inventory.
Here's to hoping he's got something good! :)
-
Take a look on italianbarber.com
The guy who runs it is a great guy, and he's just launched a bunch of new razors priced around 20 dollars I think. He speaks very highly of them and having dealt with him several times I trust his advice 100%.
-
ItalianBarber is definetly good. He's the guy that brought us RazoRock!!!
-
I just looked on italianbarber.com. The $20 and under razors are RazoRock, and those things are sharp looking!!

I really like the look of that open comb one, and brass razors, built to last like in the old days....if only I hadn't promised no more razors....

Hey there MattD
I am completely sold out on DE shaving as the owner of three decent DE's. The Derby blades are my favorite. (Thanks to Warhawk). I will not go back to plastic or "canned goo" ever again. I only use my HeadBlade when I want a quick head shave. I introduced DE and wet shaving to my brother a few weeks back and he has enthusiastically gone the same route. Much has been covered on this thread and many others about this topic so I won't elaborate.
I finally spotted an awesome looking DE razor in my country in a "brick and mortar" shop. It is a Merkur with a long handle, I suspect it is a 180 from what I have Googled. I am so stoked that I finally saw a quality brand new DE that I can actually hold in my hand and consider buying. I am so keen to buy it that I have made up my mind to do so on pay day.
Go for it, you will never look back, in fact it gets quite addictive...

Yesterday my Mother gave me a 1947 Gillette Super Speed that my Father used. I'm sure that I used it when I was a kid, but I'll give it a spin this week just for ol' time sake.

Any one have any thoughts on a Merkur 37C (slant bar)?
I love my Merkur 37C. I was recently "gifted" a Merkur 37G. It is basically the same slant razor but it is the "blinged-out" version (gold-plated).
Slant razors are great performers. I would not suggest this razor for a beginner until technique is improved after a month or so. If you have been DE shaving exclusively for atleast a month... than I would suggest a slant razor. So far... Merkur is the only company making modern-day slant razors at this time. Merkur makes the 37C (regular handle) and the 39C (long handle). The 37G has been discontinued.

Sorry , I am just so dern full of questions ! LOL

37G was discontinued? Bah, that was on my list for a buy in the next year!

Good advice on this thread. In my opinion, a DE newby will need:
1) a razor. I recommend either a Merkur 34c or one of the Edwin Jaggers at first (inexpensive, good shaves). These are available lots of places, including amazon. The EJ is a little less aggressive, which may be good for a newby.
2) blades. There are sampler packs available, but that really doesn't make sense for a newby because you don't have your technique down yet... a bad technique with a super-sharp blade = bad news. My favorites are Derby for day-to-day and feather for fun. Other brands of blades are also available at supermarkets / drug stores.
3) shaving cream or soap. Don't use the canned stuff, at the very least go to your local supermarket and get shaving soap.
4) a badger-hair brush. These are hard to find in local stores, but definitely available online. I am still using the tweezerman brush I got 5 years ago, when I first started DE shaving.
5) "nick stick" - you are bound to get yourself from time to time, and it will bleed. This stops the blood.
6) time. Plan to spend a lot of time the first few shaves, to get the blade angle down and learn technique. Don't rush this.
The good news is that even if you decide you don't like it - you will be able to recoup most of your expenses by selling the razor, brush, blades, etc. But, if you give it the time you will learn to love it for face shaving, even if not for head shaving.

Well, I appreciate everyone's suggestions and input. I ended up ordering one of the new Razorock 3 piece razors today as my first step. It was inexpensive, but had good reviews for an entry level unit. I stopped by Sally's beauty supply to look at the one they had for $12.99. It looked so thin and cheaply made that I didn't even bother. It concerned me that the thing could even securely hold a blade from the looks of it. I'llnhave another update once I get it and have a chance to try it out.
-
Which model did you order Matt?
-
The RazoRock Mirrored Pole II Three Piece. Apparently I got the last one they had in stock because now the website is saying they are out of stock. It's very sharp looking.

-
OK. I got that one too, but I haven't tried it yet because I'm enjoying the "Jaws" model so much!
-
Well as soon as I try it I'll let you know. Only problem is I have no DE experience to compare it to.
-
Sure you'll be fine mate. Take it slow, try to let the weight of the razor guide you - you definitely don't need to press like with cartridge razors!

Well, I made the mistake of trying this for the first time when I was in a hurry. It wasn't bad until I started on the underside of my chin and forgot the whole bit about using less pressure. Needless to say I scalped myself a little, but the rest wasn't bad. I'll give it a few days and wait til I have more time to do more than the one WTG pass, and try again. Thanks to everyone for all of your pointers and tips.

After DE shaving for a few months now nicks and scrapes are very rare indeed, however I did learn a new lesson last week.
My wife was talking to me, and without thinking I grabbed by EJ 89L out of the razor holder using by thumb and middle finger against the blade sides of the razor. I found out that Feather blades are indeed very sharp as the blade entered my thumb; it did not even need a slicing motion to make a deep, bloody gash.
Oh well, another life lesson learned the painful way.

I was reading this site earlier today and decided to give this a shot. Good advice I went down to a local Antique Store and found 2 old Gillette's one is gold tone Mdl. Regus , The other is dates back I would say to 40-50's My Dad had one just like it it is made out of Brass, I want to take some Basso to it and make it shine this one has teeth on it like Shark teeth. I then stopped by Wally World and the only blades Double Edge were Wilkinson. If someone could tell me why one has these teeth it would help. ;D Got them both for $10.07 .

Putting photos on a computer is pretty basic. Using your lead that came with the phone, plug it into the phone and the other side into the USB slot on your laptop or desktop computer. Wait for it to come up and open your photos, and then save them to 'my pictures' or desktop.
Open slybaldguys forum on your computer, go into this thread and attach the photo.
That is just a basic 'how to'. If you need more help just ask.

Thanks Mark, I have the picture on my computer , but it is not going on the board right. I do thank you for your instructions.
I did use one of the Razor's a Gillette "Regus" with Wilkerson Sword SS Blade, with a Van Der Hagen Brush, and Soap (Scented Luxury) Got a great shave, enjoyed the Razor it was nice and warm against the face. Haven't used a double edge since I was in my early 20's.
I then took a shower and used my Head Blade Sport !
Look good, and no place to go ! LOL 8) I will keep working on the photo.

In photobucket, once you have the photo selected, you should see a box like this to the right of the photo.
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi795.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fyy238%2Ffdchester%2FCapture.jpg&hash=2f682b931a7886b0734cc4d28357742f1e6da87e)
All you should need to do it click on the code in the box next to IMG code and it will copy it to the clipboard. Then just paste it into a message reply here. Repeat as needed until all of the pictures you want to post are in your reply.
The code, when pasted will look something like this:

Hey Man ya know that Gillette with the comb is about 80 years old. Good to hear there wasn't a big loss of body fluids. I was looking for a razor like yours at the flea market, but saw none...I'll get one off Ebay. Glad you had a good shave and will look good for the Italian women...they may fill you full of pasta and wine so you'll only be lusting in dreamland.
:*)) :*)) :*))

LOL, 80 years old wow, I knew that it must be of some age. The handle looks like brass, and the head looks like copper. I got some of those scrubbing bubbles that Mel was saying would clean them and and it worked very well. It sure is funny when you are looking for a item. You have a hard time finding it. Then when you aren't looking for it , they are all over . ;D

Waine, did you try any kind of straight yet?
I was gifted with a nice straight from my mother who bought a sewing machine and found an old one in the bottom draw. It has the owners name engraved on it from Germany. The blade was a little rusted so I meticulously sanded the blade with 600, 800, 1000 grit and now I am slowly polishing it with 1200 grit paper and oil until it is nice and shiny again. Now I am on the hunt for some decent 6000 to 8000 whet stones and a strop to learn how to actually use it. I am so ampt to try it out Bluebriz. I tried a shavette but gashed open my face on the first stroke.

Sweet Waine, Love to see a picture of that pup ! I have had a few, but with the arthritis , and broken paws, and bones from past days ;) I gave up those . Cool though . O0

Waine, how did things go with the straight? Did you get it honed up and find some hones and strop for yourself? I'd love to hear how it's going for you!

I don't see much of waine on here anymore :-(

Waine is still about, but infrequently. He's dealing with internet connectivity issues ... expecting resolution early in the New Year. Hope so, 'cause I miss his participation as well.
