Title: The Reaction was None!
Post by: Laser Man on September 23, 2012, 04:21:38 PM
Today my wife and I met up with another couple we used to work with, but haven't seen in 15 years since they moved a couple states away.  I was fully expecting a reaction to my sly look because the last time we saw each other, I had a full head of dark brown hair and a clean shaven face.  I braced for the inevitable questions.

Well, to my surprise and delight, we spent over four hours talking and catching up on things over lunch and  they never asked about the sly dome!  We exchanged the standard comments about everyone looking good and not having aged, but not a single comment on the bald head and facial fur.  I'm amazed!

It's because the hair doesn't make the man so it was a moot point!!!

You're right!  I probably thought about the difference in my appearance more than they did.

I'm assuming (which usually gets me in trouble) that part of the other couple was a gentleman.  If so, how had he changed ... hair-wise?

His receding hairline had receded very far, to the point where he is completely bald on top!

Perhaps you could keep in touch and gently suggest that the fringe should go!!

Very interesting. Reminds me of the first day in the office with a bald head. Everyone commented on the bow tie, but no one commented on the bald head.

Yesterday, I played piano for a 'vespers' service.  I accompanied a fellow playing trumpet. Had not seen him for several years.  No comment about the hair.  His wife was there. She had not seen my in several years as well. At the end of the service, she comments that when she came in, she had to ask her husband, "Who is that man at the piano? I don't recognize him!".  She remembered me with a full head of hair.  So I told here that I'm BBC.  She did ask a few questions at that time.  I'm OK with that.  I love the smooth feel of the bald head, so I'm going to keep it.

It's surprising how often there isn't any reaction when we're execting a huge one.

This is very true.  I guess we all think we're the center of attention, but in reality, we aren't.  Fence sitters take note!

Thanks for sharing your experience, npsbg.

It just goes to show that it's really not THAT big of a deal. It's a big change to someone's look, sure, but it's not an "endgame" by any means.

I'm amazed that nothing was mentioned...glad y'all had a good reunion.

Perhaps he said nothing because he knew that it might then bring his hair loss in to question?

Thanks for sharing, npsbg.

I'm always surprised by the non-reaction  by people I I haven't seen in a while.

And those I do get a reaction out of, the next time I see them they're already used to my sly look.

Cool story. Mr Zed, what grade are you at playing the piano?

Cool story. Mr Zed, what grade are you at playing the piano?

The music that I buy/play is generally rated Intermediate or Moderately difficult.

the rating system is easy, moderately easy, intermediate, moderately difficult and advanced.

intermediate: greater variety of styles with an expanded range and more rhythmic and technical demands; accessible to most pianists; may require preparation time for some players.

Moderately difficult: More frequent use of octaves, runs, and arpeggios; longer arrangements in a wide range of styles, often with more complicated rhythms.

My friend has had thin hair since he was in his 20's.  He also works for one of the most conservative (in terms of dress code) companies in the US.  Knowing that, I wouldn't put him on the spot.

Since I went full-time bald-by-choice 2 or 3 years ago it has never failed to amaze me about the total lack of comments about my bald head. A few harmless jokes from friends here and there but mostly nothing at all.

I agree KentBaldGuy.  I've been bald for over 8 years and after the first few days no one has ever commented.  Very mainstream these days.  Interestingly people often comment on dreadful combovers and obvious toupees.

So true here too, I was expecting when I went from a full head of hair not too short to shaved I would get a ton of feedback. There was some but really to be honest nothing negative at all like when you got a bad haircut or grew a beard . More mainstream for sure so it does not stand out.

Let's do it right now, friend. I have my clippers in my back left pocket, my razor blade in the front right pocket and a trial size of Head Slick in my shirt pocket. Just sit down here and we can take care of your head!

Bald guys; always prepared for a head shave.

When I read Zed's post I imagined shaving my friends head, then oil, shave soap and puttin' the cold steel to his dome...very funny, but I could do it.

I've noticed much of the same when it comes to reactions, or rather non-reactions. It's amazing how much we can build things up in our heads. Anticipation, fear and anxiety have roots that are imaginary. As more and more guys shave their heads, the fear and anxiety will continue to lose ground.

How true.  The other night I was watching a tele show , bidding on storage lockers.  Cool show but I would kick Hester's ass.  Yup he has went above and beyond with that crap!  But Barry bought a shed and found a Human head sculpered out of wood and in the back it had all these thing's in side of the head.

Cool, not sure what it was worth , but 6,000 but please do not quote me.  But I thought it is was cool due to the fact that each and everyone of us have things rolling .   ;D

That's pretty much what I've had over the past week of being sly. Pretty much zero reaction. I've had a total of two comments; so I'm pretty much assuming most people either haven't noticed or cared. I did keep my hair quite short (beard trimmer with no guard) for a number of years, so it's likely most didn't even notice. (Which tells me I already looked more bald than I thought  ;D)

The first person to notice (and say anything) was my four year old son, but that wasn't until 3 days after I'd started shaving; the other was a friend just yesterday. My wife still hasn't said anything on the subject, so either she hasn't noticed or doesn't care about it...

My son was cute about it. He just got a bit of a silly grin and said, "Dad how did you get your hair like that?"

When my grandson was about 4 he aske "why has my hair moved from my head to my face". He was rather concerned.

I said only special people had that combination.

My three adult daughters took three days to notice my head shave last January.

I did mine before a formal event and my family didn't say anything the only person who said anything was my best friend and he asked if he may touch my head.
He proceeded to ask the magic 8-ball a question lol
I don't know very few people will ask why, I've only been asked why twice.
