I'm curious, what are your favorite books?
(Religious doctrines excluded)
For me:
Fiction: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
Non-Fiction: To Be or Not Be Intimidated, That is the Question by Robert Ringer
-
"Missed Fortune 101" By Doug Andrews

1984 by George Orwell
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
-
Haven't I seen this before in another thread?...maybe not.. ???
'The Lord of the Rings' (it totally goes without saying!)
I love 'Flowers in the Attic' by Virginia Andrews, plus the two follow-ups are good too,

I just like to look at the pretty pictures.....no surprises there.....
The last couple of books I have read were all about the music business.
-
I'm a fiction reader... books get me away from reality:
A Dangerous Fortune - Ken Follett
Term Limits - Vince Flynn
Up Country - Nelson Demille
The "Prey" series (14 books) - John Sanford
While I don't read those authors exclusively, I have read everything they have written and most of their stuff is great!
-
I'd have to say mine is J D Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. The scary part is I can relate to Holden very much but I think actually everyone can. Not just killers. Who likes phony people anyways?
-
Like reading a few books from Ben Mezrich...
Bringing Down the House(The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions)
Ugly Americans(no, I know what your thinking at first glance, but this book has nothing to do with BaldRob...really it is about...The True Story of the Ivy League Cowboys Who Raided the Asian Markets for Millions )
Just started to read Busting Vegas(The MIT Whiz Kid Who Brought the Casinos to Their Knees)
-
I think Arnie is trying to scam some folks, anybody else?
-
I haven't read in years although I used to buy at least 1 book per week way back when.
Faves:
Chickenhawk (Bob Mason)
Once A Warrior King (David Donovan)
A Bad Place (Dean Koontz)
Any Tom Clancy
Some Wilber Smith
Some Eric Lustbader
-
I think Arnie is trying to scam some folks, anybody else?
maybe hes trying to get rich quick? Maybe its better then the old commercials with the crazy jacket with the question marks all over it.
-
I read mostly non fiction history. Mostly European.

Yes, there are so many, but I just re read The Distant Mirror (The Calamitous 14th Century) by Barbara Tuchman. It is a narrative of France and England during the 100 years war. I believe it is out of print now but you can probably get a copy through Amazon or ABE Books. I highly recommend it. Barbara Tuchman has also written a very famous book, The Guns of August, about the origins of WWI. Seriously there is so much out there. Some times it is best to pick an era or country that interests you. For me, I am a specialist in French royalty of the of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

I do have a system for the black jack table and it can be yours for just $29.95...but if you send me your money in the next 10 minutes, you'll get it at the low low price of $19.95. I'd throw in a free gift, but I'm still waiting for my HB Beanie. :*))

Arnie, I've read Busting Vegas and Bringing Down The House. Great books! I liked Busting Vegas a little more. Especially their story of busting the casino in Monte Carlo.
-
Ive read Killing Floor by Lee Child not so long ago that was ok,not a big book reader really

Cool Tyler...I look forward to finishing Busting Vegas. You'd probably like his other non-fiction book, Ugly Americans, has a similar feel to it. Downside is, unlike his other books, he never hits on the exact formulas/systems they use in the Asian market...but still a good read.

Cather in the Rye - JD Salinger
Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
A Series of Unfortunate Events - Lemmony Snickett
I'm pretty much a 26 year old 250lbs 10 years old

Most anything by John Grisham. I've read all his books and waiting for the next one.
Wild Stories: The Best of Men's Journal
The Summer He Didn't Die. Jim Harrison
The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck. An all time classic.
There are many other that could go on this list. Since I am on a job where on the average evening, there are 7.5 hours out of 8 that there is no work to do, I get a lot of reading in. I might scan this list for my next book to read! Here is a link to my library (still incomplete).

"Interview with the vampire" by Anne Rice. Shes great O0
-
Anne Rice has a relatively new book out called Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt that is very interesting. It's supposed to be the beginning of a new series focusing on Jesus' life between the ages of 7 and 30. The years that are missing from the Biblical accounts. It's fictionalized of course but it's interesting and very respectfully done.

Wow. My best friend was writing a screenplay that was going to focus on Jesus' life between those years but in a modern day setting. Right before he finalized the script he had a near life ending injury that has left him with a brain injury that he's fighting to recover from. You can learn more about him at http://www.ryansreach.com (http://www.ryansreach.com)

Anne Rice is a genre writer. Interview With the Vampire was great, but her subsequent output was mediocre at best. Lestate was ok, but she is a one note writer with nothing more to say. Has any one here read her pornographic " Beauty" series? lots of bondage and explicit homosexual and bisexual fantasy sex ?

Thats cool my friend there are not about Vegas or Blackjack and that sounds mature to me

The Vampire Chronicles did get a bit repetitive as they went along. Rice's talent, however, is beyond question. She simply fell into the same trap that befalls many artists. She continued to beat a dead horse, most likely at the behest of her editors and publishers who wanted a cut of movie rights. This new series seems promising, and very heartfelt given Rice's recent return to the church. Looking forward to the next book. Successfully sustaining the story over several books will be the challenge.
I have not read any of her erotica, nor do I care to. Reading about or watching the sexual exploits of other people isn't nearly as much fun as......well, I'll stop now to avoid self incrimination.
-
Perhaps you are right but she lost me forever with the Queen of the Damned.
-
I love fiction cuz you can get lost in them very easily. John Grisham is the man - I have all of his books. I also enjoy reading James Patterson, David Baldacci, & Vince Flynn. Thanks ChallengeMe for the online library link... might get around to doing that someday. I have tons of books.

For fiction, I currently like anything by Vince Flynn -- if you like Clancy, you'll like Flynn as well. I'm also a big fan of history books and the History Channel... am currently reading 'A World Undone - The Story of the Great War 1914 - 1918.' It has a lot of good history -- started reading it because as I understand it, much of the crises and conflicts we are dealing with today have their roots in WWI and its aftermath, and this book supposedly lays it all out very well.
Ryan, maybe you can ditch the comic books, and see if you can find something in a book that you might find interesting. With the internet, it might be a lot easier to discover books/authors that might peak your interest. I used to read more when I was younger, and now it takes me a long time to finish a book... too many competing interests. :'(
-
My job deals 100% with General Motors, and since they are now on strike, I have LOTS of time for reading (actually, I have had lots of time for reading on the job for a long time)
My current book is Legends of the Fall, by Jim Harrison.
I recently finished Into Thin Air, by Jon Krakauer.
-
i think the last book i read cover to cover was probably a Dr. Suess book around bedtime one nite. ;) (all the dads know the feeling. the soon to be dads will know the feeling. O0

I do like some books, but I dont find to manny I like. Although, I like the Longarm Western's written by Tabour Evans. I have almost read the whole series, and have not found one I do not like. And one other book would be Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck.

I love to read, but don't get to as much as I used to. Read my daily newspaper and some magazines mostly now.

I also read comics and I am 30. I don't see anything wrong with them at all and feel comics are a great artform. The literary quality of some of the comics/graphic novels rival anything I have seen in other literary artforms. Check out Alan Moore (V for Vendetta is one example), Steve Niles (for horror), Josh Whedon (a personal favorite), Frank Miller (Sin City / 300), etc. Plus some of the art itself is fantastic...

I have one left: "Sirens of Titan". After that I'll go out and find Cat's Cradle and Welcome to the Monkey House.

Stew I wonder if all you do is lecture people about their choice in reading material or body adornment. I'm getting real tired of you harping on people all the time.
I am 27 and I read comic books and I read "intellectual books" too. I see nothing wrong with it and you certainly are in no position to tell people what they need to read so why dont you back off and start accepting people have different interests.
-
I could list a million here but....
The Prophet - Kahlil Gibran
Tuesdays with Morry - Mitch Albom
The Way of the Peaceful Warrior - Dan Millman
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
Anything written by Louise Hay, Deepak Chopra or Paulina Simmons
-
wpruitt! I'm rereading "Owen Meany" by Irving. It's a great story1

I agree J, he seems to be a pretty critical fellow, he got my goat, so to speak, back in the tattoo and piercing threads and I had to bite my tongue. Some people should keep their opinions to themselves, you know what they say about opinions, right?

I guess I didn't realize this was 'Dump on Stew' day. There is nothing wrong with comic books; yes I read them when I was growing up; and no, I wasn't trying to be critical. I got the feeling from Ryan that he was searching for more, and I was trying to encourage him to see what else was out there. Maybe 'dump the comic books' wasn't the best choice in words (I try to be careful with how I choose my words) because obviously some of you interpreted that as 'lecturing.' Ryan, read whatever you want; maybe I misinterpreted what you were saying, and if I did, I'm sorry. JDog, I don't consider Vince Flynn as intellectual, and I don't lecture people. I think you may have misjudged me.
As far as body art comments mentioned previously, I believe I tried to be nothing but respectful in previous threads. Although I am not into tats and piercings, I tried to offer a different perspective... not rushing in to do something extreme without thinking through things like how it could impact future job opportunities; will you really be happy 10 years down the road about your choices; can you reverse the body art if you decide at a later date that you don't want it anymore, and understanding how society (whether right or wrong) judges appearances.
It is a free country (including Australia, Canada, and the UK the last time I checked) to do what you want. I do my best not to judge other people on their outward appearances. I would like to have the same non-judgemental courtesy given to me. I won't make a lame apology like 'if I offended anybody, I'm sorry,' because there was never any malicious intent on my part on anything that I have said. If it came across that way, then maybe I am not as good at choosing my words as I think I am. Sending private messages offering your perspectives can sometimes be more effective than a public flogging. OK, maybe that last sentence was a little preachy, but hopefully you know what I mean. :) Let's be friends, ok?

Cool dude, but i was just kidding man, take a joke! I read books too, just as i said, got to be into them. Like, for example the Longarm novels, if you are into westerns, or in my opinion, the Longarm series is like a western version of James Bond (007), give them a read.

I never thought you were too bent out of shape about the whole thing, but subsequent comments from others were decidedly not kidding, and were quite harsh and personal which is why I responded the way I did. Take it easy.

Also, what is wrong with comic books? I bet u read them as a kid.

Stew,
Just for the record you have not offended me, nor have I ever been upset with you over your posts. I am just a fan of comics (and tattoos - though I must have missed that thread).
Peace

I love Dead Pool comics, and he's Canadian! woo

Stew, I am sorry if the earlier post came across to you as harsh. It's another example of how our words, when typed, can come across differently as they would when in person.
It wasn't meant as an attack, and I tried to make it lighter at the end. (I should have used more smileys :) ).
I think sometimes a post will have a certain tone to it, so to speak, and can be seen as preaching and opinionated. I do agree with your advice on thinking before you do. I'm sure all of us have done something we should have thought longer on.
People will still make their own decisions, and as you also know, "with age comes wisdom" .
I didn't think of the way my post would come across to you, and I don't usually post (angry) replies like that anyway. I apologize if any feelings were hurt.
Let's get back to being Sly, this post went way,way off the subject. (Sorry Mods).

Dune, Frank Herbert
The original novel is the best work of fiction written, in my opinion. The rest of the series was just ok, but the original stands tall.
The Count of Monte Christo comes a close second.

No kidding man. Dune is a fantastic novel. I have read that one at least 4 times so far, and will no doubt re-read it again in the future. I never tire of hearing the story of Paul Atreides. O0 O0 O0
The rest of the classic series is excellent too, but in a much different way than the 1st book. Starting with Dune Messiah, the series gets much more cerebral. God Emporer of Dune is one of the "deepest" books out there in my opinion. Great series IMO.

Also ... I just noticed that you look a bit like Frank Herbert yourself:

Freak, read my post above. And I think you should keep out of it too, no need for your
angry sounding input. I guess it bothered you more than Stew, huh?
I don't need your immature schoolboy attacks, what are you barely out of your teens?,
you've done this in other threads to folks on here too. I kept quiet on it, but you need to grow up and stop being an opinionated. You sound like an angry dude, and reading your posts just confirms that. The shoe fits, and so does the name.

You know, one thing I really want to do is go to the library and try to find some of the books I read as a kid. Those were some great stories. We had summer reading club at the local library and I would generally read about a book a day over the summers.

Hell yeah, like Goosebumps and RL Stine and Alvin Schwartz "Scary Stories to tell in the dark,
The artwork by Stephen Gammel in those books is what I remember most, creepy as hell. Combined with the prose ,it made for an even scarier tale!
-
Oh man, I forgot about those goosebumps books. I especially liked the ones where you could make your own story line.
-
Anybody ever read the kids' book "Ben and Me"?
The story line is from the perspective of a mouse who fixes all of Benjamin Franklin's mistakes.

PBurke ... the thing you have to realize is just how volitile a subjects "favorite books" can be. I mean, hell, this thread was doomed from the beginning ... just the mere mention of the word "book" makes most peoples blood boil! b0x3r @rg$ B@n% b!@)

Good one, X lol ;D We strayed a bit off course there. We're back on track, tho.
I do remember the scholastic book club, and how I couldn't wait for my new book order to come in, it was such anticipation and I loved reading them.
As a young boy I remember reading the Hardy boys mysteries, I loved those stories, and the one "chum", Chet, I believe was always getting himself into funny situations. I still enjoy mystery books to this day.
I was a big Stephen King fan, and love his collection Night Shift, great stories. I'm also a big fan of autobiographies. Krakauer's "Into the Wild" was unbelievable.

Yeah, but it seamed that the books I wanted most always got back ordered and never came in :(

The Razor's Edge by Somerset Maugham is my favorite fiction novel. Hollywood has turned it into a movie twice, but neither version in my opinion has done the book any justice.
-
I enjoyed the Bill Murray version of the movie (despite his innate goofiness.)
I'll have to get a copy of the book and experience the real deal.
