Just wondering if any of you ever felt like you had to justify why you shaved your head. For me, I felt that I had to. When I started shaving, I was seeing a lot of hair in the drain when I showered. I also still had a lot of hair left. But since it was MY head and no one else's, I noticed that the hair was retreating from my front. So for the first few years, I got questioned by family and some friends as to why I did it. Some of them felt that it wasn't necessary. The reason I am asking this is because I felt I had to explain. But the past few years it has become apparent why I shave it off. In fact this weekend, I realized that I really don't need to shave the crown any more. It is pretty smooth there. So I shaved everything else but the crown initially. It actually got me pretty smooth. I did end up shaving the crown as there are stragglers. But has anyone ever felt like this?

for me, I just needed a change.

Nope. Don't need to justify it to anyone but myself.

Agreed! My life, my head, my happiness.............
-
Nobody's asked me why yet, but I would just tell them I like how it looks on me.
-
Just wanted a change after years of long hair and I asked nobody for advice. O:O

I had some justification keeping the shaved head. As most of you know, The Lovely Mrs. Schro was not a fan of my shaved head. However, finding relief from seborrheic dermatitis was the main reason I kept it sly. The nice thing is, I think she's actually warmed to the look (at a minimum, she isn't saying anything).

I don't justify nuttin to nobody.
-
At first, if asked why I did it, I'd just say I was tired of having hair. Now I say "because I wanted to". My head, my hair, my choice.
-
I had per-fuse thinning on the crown so it was going to need to be done sooner or later. I choose sooner. My wife :@` was against it at first but has now warmed up to it. We both realize my hair days are done.

Borrowing a line from an old Rogaine commercial: "I love my Dad, but I'm not in a rush to look like him". My dad had a donut hole, as did my grandad....When I lost my front hairline, and people asked, I just used the aforementioned quote.
-
I wanted to do it so I did. No one has ever asked me why. My wife wasn't too thrilled at first but quickly decided she preferred me sly and has never commented since.

Same here. No one has asked - nor do I expect them to. It was all for me.

You don't have to justify anything. It's all you.

`Dr!n# I'll drink to that!

According to a close relative, I shave my head sly for 'vanity' . Seems reasonable.
-
Because I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggonnit, People like me. :D

In my opinion when you get down to the facts, most of the folks that belong to SBG are pretty vain about their appearances. All you have to do to prove it is take inventory of our arsenal of grooming equipment.

Please don't open the bathroom cabinet door. Everything will come tumbling out like a dozen clowns from a mini-car.
I won't need to purchase a single thing for several years. Not saying I won't, just that I don't need to.

Hey Frontier, I'm no different...a big boy with lots of toyz :*))

I pay my bills, and I do not or will not justify anything to anyone. 8)

I was happy to read this thread. :)
As a sly woman, I often feel that I need to justify my choice. Especially when someone doesn't like it. Then I whip out the "I shave for medical reasons" and if their curiosity leads them to ask more questions I finally bring out the big guns - "My head itches and the doctors can't help me though they have tried. I have less itching and rashes when I shave bald. I'd rather not go insane from itching 24/7 like I did for several years, and if that means going bald, then okay!" USUALLY that shuts them up, unless they are FAMILY members....... :x!
But in truth, I want to be even more comfortable with my head. I think it's much harder to reach that ultimate self-comfort level as a LADY with a sly dome than it is for a man with a sly dome, at least in the USA. (No, I DO NOT have cancer, No I didn't shave because I have a political agenda, No I am not homosexual, No you may not take my picture to post on your fetishist website about bald women!)
I wish I could just say "I shave my head because I like it that way" but 1) I'm not sure that's entirely true - I mean, if I could have hair without the side effects of itching and rash and dandruff etc then I would and 2) I feel like it puts a little too much "responsibility" on ME for shaving which makes people think ala Brittney Spears and her mental-breakdown-head-shaving fiasco. And that's certainly NOT an image I want to personify!
So sometimes I'm still not entirely sure how to handle it. At home with myself (I live alone) I enjoy my smooth head. Out in public it's so-so. With family or friends who I know do NOT approve, I keep a hat on.
I know if someone had a head as itchy as mine, even if that someone was a woman, they would be easily justified in shaving to avoid these problems if that would make life easier. I suspect a lot of folks think that just because they don't feel they could do life without hair it means everyone should FIGHT to keep their hair regardless of the cost (like my Mom who had cancer and chemo and wouldn't be seen by anyone without her wig or a big hat). I guess I also feel like I have so many things to fight for constantly (I have to fight to learn to walk again despite CRPS/RSD, I have to fight to control my IBS, Celiac, SIBO, and other diseases, I have to fight exhaustion from the previous etc). Why should I have to fight for something that isn't at the top of my list? I guess if I distance myself from myself...hahaha that sounds funny (outta body experience?)...and look at the situation with a little more objectivity, I wouldn't negatively judge someone in my shoes going through all I do every day because she decided to make one part of her life a little easier by shaving her head (especially when she looks as HAWT as me....LOLOL... :-* )
So why do I feel the need to justify myself to anyone?
Sigh.....

Gutsygirl......thank you for sharing your story! Too often I believe that others are very quick to jump the gun and give out opinions and advice when none are needed. But especially in a woman, people do get curious. But I hope that your family will quit bugging you since I am sure you have told them many times why you shaved your head!
On another note, since I am the originator of this thread, I should note that I noticed my misspelling AFTER I posted. I don't think there is a way to edit the title of a post....is there? Anyway, I meant to say "Justifying BEING Sly"! LOL! :o :)

That's ok marsh...your typo only hid 1 billionth of your perfection. ^-^
And if it makes you feel any better, the truth is that I didn't even notice your omission of "ing" and therefore I didn't even miss that 1 billionth of perfection!
As I thought about it, you know, you're right. Well, of course you know you're right - perfection knows itself. I came to agree that it IS the fact that people jump to quick conclusions and form opinions before having all the information. And sometimes even those who have access to all the information (think Family) may have difficulty with ACCEPTANCE of that information/facts (i.e. struggling with denial) so that they are unable to see the situation from more angles.
Gratefully it seems like I don't get the "Do you have cancer?" too often. Unfortunately, it's usually the other comments listed. But then again there are those lovely people who give the most sincere compliments and tell me they LOOOOVE the shape of my head, it makes my eyes stand out, etc. :)
Maybe I just need to go without my hats more often. :) Expose my very white dome a bit more!

If any of you are wondering where I got my signature statement where I say, "Thinning Hair Hides Perfection, Go Sly". I will tell you.
I have heard some say that "God made some heads perfect, the rest He covered with hair". That is a take on that saying!
-
i decided it will be me - shaved
-
I have been asked by almost anyone who saw me why I shaved my head - I always said the truth that I did it because my hair is getting thin, some people then said that it fits me well and others said nothing
so to say that I don't care what others think would be a lie, because like everyhuman being I am not antisocial and once would like to have a relationship again - so I sure do care if women do find me attractive or not, that doesn't mean that I feel like I should justify my decision if someone doesn't like it but saying I don't care what others think is easier when there is already someone around who wants to share life with you - my point is not to whine about things that can't be changed, just wanted to share my experience
