"Eeeeeeeeeek" Squealed my girlfriend as she came through the door .....
GF: "Oh my God -- what have you done now?!?!"
Me: Silent Smile
GF: "Huh what is that?!"
Me: Quiet
GF: <Nervous Giggle> "Can I touch it?"
Me: " Sure Go ahead"
GF: "It's so smooth -- where you go to do that?"
Me: "Did myself -- want to try?"
GF: <Alarmed> "Nooooo Wayyyyyy --- can I take photo?"
Me: "Ya -- but no facebook right?"
GF: "Ok don't worry" <click, giggle, giggle> "Oh my God" <off to bathroom Giggling>
GF: <returning from bathroom, still giggling> "Maybe it doesn't look so bad -- I just need to get used to it"
Me: "Sure -- I look so much more sexy right?"
GF: <Giggling> "Not so sure --- I am hungry -- let's go out to eat Botak head"
...... Botak is the Malay word for bald and hence my forum identity is born and my first post here.
So yea --- always wanted to try --- not sure I will stay with it -- still got a good thick head of hair except for a two square inch helicopter landing pad on the top of my head -- but always wanted to try the shaved head look. 3 days in now -- will give it at least a few weeks :-\
Other random musings:
1) Sort of look like a cross between Elmer Fudd and Yosimite Sam :px ---- but somehow I see potential in the look
2) Biggest Issue --- I am a Caucasian living in SE Asia --- tropical sun has left me a very bronze face (and bronze helicopter landing pad for that matter) but now the rest of my head is the most pale shade of alabaster I have seen :o --- thinking of venturing out to get some sun on my new botak head -- but concerned about burn. Happy to get any suggestions .... i know that some say that white guys cannot carry the look so well.
3) Definitely like the cool feeling in this heat
4) Maybe there is some intimidation factor with the look --- not sure if that is a good thing or not --- friends and neighbors quite amused --- but walking down the crowded street (where people NEVER give way) it was a parting of the red sea. I think big, bald, bearded Caucasians still carry a bit of a stigma in this part of the world
5) Oh one other question -- I just don't like the goatee look for myself --- so am basically wearing a full (short) beard that gets shorter as it reaches the midpoint of my ear and and then disappears --- any suggestions on this? All the botak heads I see either wear goatees or ship the facial hair altogether.
Anyway -- that is my intro and hello to all.

nice! show us the photo!

Congrats. Very creative first post. I would be careful out in the sun use sun screen it will adjust on its own.

Welcome to the Sly World and to SBG.
- I've never heard it said that "white guys cannot carry the look so well." I can line up a dozen guys to prove differently.
- Get some sun in small doses frequently and the white scalp will gradually fade. I did about 20 minutes in the mid-morning and again in the afternoon which was effective and avoided sunburn.
- Commit to the 30-day challenge: shave daily for 30 days which will give your body time to adjust (scalp will toughen a bit, color will develop, etc.) and it gives you and others time to become comfortable with the Sly look. Then decide if you want to continue, or maybe grow it back a little to a buzz cut, or if you want to re-establish that probably-increasing-with-time helicopter pad.
- And participate here regularly so we can share the experience with you. You've got a great sense of humor and I would enjoy seeing more of your world through your descriptions.
Again, welcome "Botak-head"

Once you botak you never go back.. Just saying. As far as the beard goes, mine sounds similar, and I like the look, or 3 day stubble. Welcome to the brotherhood and enjoy both your new 'hairstyle', and the site.

Welcome!!
Sounds like your having fum
Awsome

Welcome Botak! I enjoyed your post...all in all a good first dialog between partners, in my opinion. I know from my experience in that part of the world that BBC and a beard isn't part of the culture. But you get those looks while on the street just being a Westerner, so why not push the envelope a little more?
Good luck and respect that equatorial sun.

Welcome Botak! That was an awesome introduction. Glad to see that you girl friend likes it. Give your head a week or so to start matching the color of the rest of your skin.
Welcome to the SBGs!

Welcome to the Botak world! A supportive girlfriend is always a plus!

Welcome to the family mate. Your GF sounds like she will come around to the idea very quickly O0
The bald and bearded look goes well, there are quite a few guys around here sporting a very nice full beard, without seeing a picture I am already sure it is a keeper!

Great post! Welcome to SBG!
As far as the "intimidation factor" goes, I've posted on this myself. I noticed a change in people's reactions to me as a sly guy - letting me go through the door first, calling me "sir", acting a little deferential. It felt very strange at first, but now I'm used to it (and kind of like it!)

I just had a similar discussion with one of my mates on the way to the gym today. I asked him if he felt I wasn't very approachable, long story short, something happened at work, and one of the boys got annoyed with me instead of just coming up to me and telling me what I was doing wrong and fix it, the guy was in a bad mood since our late lunch, so I didn't take it to heart.
Anyways, he said that if he didn't know me (the guy at work knows me quite well, so I think he just wanted and excuse to darken his already bad mood) he would probably consider me unapproachable and intimidating, with my larger size, bald head and big beard. I find it quite hilarious, because I am very approachable and, anything but intimating, especially if you hear me speak (as my foreman always tells me, apparently I have a naturally high voice for my looks)

The first words my daughter said when she saw me sly were, "you look like a state trooper! It's really intimidating!"
For my non-American friends, state troopers are the state police who among other things patrol the highways. Here in my state, they tend to have buzz cuts or shaved heads, wear sunglasses and have a bit of swagger in the way they carry themselves.

Welcome to the club, botak. Go easy on the sun and make sure to use sunscreen. I spend most of the year in Hawai'i (also a tropical climate) so it's taken only about three months for my dome to match my face color-wise.

Well thats a very nice welcome from so many and it seems this a a cool forum --- so I am going to reply to as many as I can ...

nice! show us the photo!
Thans Paul for being the first to reply ----- no pics yet ---- need to get this two tone alabaster-bronze thing sorted first.

Congrats. Very creative first post. I would be careful out in the sun use sun screen it will adjust on its own.
Thanks dave -- and yea think sun management might be the biggest issue

Thanks frontier guy --- yea I will try to give it 30 days. As to "white guys" being able to carry the look --- well there certainly seems to be a lot of skepticism on the net --- but who cares!!!
Found this bit from George Carlin and a subsequent blogger http://happylists.wordpress.com/2008/07/12/reasons-not-to-shave-your-head/
Never cared much for Carlin Anyway and I think most of this stuff is best taken with good humor.
Did have a Malay guy tell me (before I shaved) when I raised the topic that he was worried I might wind up looking like a walking egg ...
hmmmm --- with friends like that haha

Take that as a compliment --- not too many resemble the "funkasaurus"

Thanks slynito --- yea pushing the envelope a bit cannot be a bad thing.

Welcome to the SBGs!
Thans Doug -- yea I will be happy to get past the skin tone matching phase --- right now I kind of look like I could be a new form of alien for Star Trek the Next Next Next Next etc. Generation

Welcome to the Botak world! A supportive girlfriend is always a plus!
Thanks slysirharry --- well I am not sure that "supportive" is the right description yet --- more like "tolerant" and really hoping I get over this idea in a hurry lol

Thank beardman --- yea -- I am thinking the full beard thing might work --- my beard is a lot shorter than yours though --- I kind of like what you have done though.

Thanks Npsbg --- yea its a weird feeling -- although I have to say your photo has a serious "mess with me at your own risk" vibe to it. Not necessarily a bad thing though ...

Thanks Hingtao -- yea Hawaii climate is similar --- but now you have me scared --- 3 months???
I was thinking like a weekend at the beach lol

Scalp coloring will vary by person - for me (subtropical Florida climate) it was a couple of weeks with moderate sun exposure during mid-morning and mid-afternoon. And I was the only one who really noticed the two-tone style.

I should probably change my photo! I'm not nearly that unapproachable in real life!

Welcome and enjoy the attention your new look affords you.
