Title: I am really having a hard time
Post by: waveflow on September 11, 2012, 10:57:20 AM
I have been lurking the forum for about a month now. I found this awesome site through google, and so far, this is the most welcoming forum I have ever joined. so here goes my intro:

I'm 24, not tall -5'2, skinny about 120 lbs, and YES I'm balding. I consider myself a heavy smoker 10-20 sticks a day, but I have been planning to quit for the nth time. I think hitting the gym helps me not to smoke as I am having problems breathing while working out. Last week, I almost fainted while doing some bench press. It was a Lung opener for me. I AM QUITTING SMOKING SOON, hopefully.

I'm a CPA but currently unemployed , I have been bumming around for 2 months now. I am not sure if I'm enjoying my lazyness or just stuck at my current frustrating state. I lost my confidence way back when my highschool girlfriend left me for another guy. I have been single 11 months now, and I miss having a girl. Now, I have been thinking ever since my dome was thinning to go bald, and I can't really take the plunge. I have consulted my parents, my friends, my girl bestfriend; all of them disapproves of me shaving my head bald. I don't know if the comb over did really work for me, but to achieve the "ok" look it will take me 30 mins of hair drying and combing.

I might bargain and have atleast a 2'buzz cut,but I know I will end up shaving it because I have a scar in my scalp- I had this scar since I was 9 years old due to a head accident in the park. I was reckless as a kid  :px  It has a circumference of about  1/2 inch. It's not that noticeable anymore thanks to my thinning dome which is far more striking than the scar.

I hope I can have the courage to go to the barber tomorrow for a head shave, or else I will be stuck at this phase in my life where I am unproductive, unattractive, and ridiculously pathetic.

You know, it's takes courage to post on here for the first time, so well done!

Reading your posting it appears that you know what you need to do with your life, as in the smoking, job etc. The hair thing? well, it's YOUR head, no-one elses, you do with it what you choose! Perhaps start with a buzz cut and see what you think? you can go shorter if you like.

Don't set yourself up for failure though, if you set yourself too many goals then it can be overwhelming, take it a step at a time, write a list, tick off the stuff you have achieved.

This site is fantastic, not just for support about hair but life in general.

Welcome!

Welcome! If a head shave is what YOU want then go for it. I was already thinking about going for it but this site really helped me make the decision and I haven't looked back

Thanks leighmundo40. I will surely do this man. I can't stay this unsatisfied no more. Also Thanks to Hingatao, and F77Scot.

You guys are very quick to respond. You know what, I was thinking of deleting my intro because I was way too ashamed after rereading my post but you guys where so awesome for responding very quick.

Hi Waveflow:  1st of all welcome 2 the sly fraternity.  I can understand why you are having a hard time about "taking the plunge" because of family and friends.  However... I can guarantee that if you have the courage and "take the plunge" that you will be the better man for it.

The sooner you do it the better you will feel.  The more you procrastinate on taking the plunge the more "curious" you will be.  I say "do the deed".  I promise  that you will be thanking us when the "deed is done".  Keep us posted 2 your road to slyness.

For the most part your procrastination is delaying your freedom, confidence, and liberation.  It is like having a lottery ticket and not cashing it in.  I say cash that lottery ticket and SHAVE THAT DOME SMOOOOOOOOTH!!!! 8) O0

Once you take the plunge and shave smooth you will either know its for you or not....you should try it at least once to find out?

Hey man dont be put off by other peoples opinions at end of the day its your head. When i shaved my head i got a few people asking what happened to my hair. I quite simply replied with " i shaved it " i think they were expecting me to be embarrassed by what i had done but if anything i was far from it. I took control of something that was destroying my self confidence . But now..... Well thats a different story . Good luck in what ever your decision may be brother :-)

Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind should be the case here

Welcome waveflow, I'm glad you posted. As you've seen already, this is a very supportive community and the guys here are ready on a moment's notice to provide support and encouragement and information - from all parts of the world.

After reading your post, all I can think is that "it's time for a change." And this is the perfect opportunity.

The quickest way to "shake up your life" is to go ahead and shave your head. Now.  You cannot imagine the emotional relief you will feel when you are no longer burdened by the time and effort required to maintain the facade of hair.

Yes, it will be a surprise ... to those around you and to yourself. That's why you need to commit to the 30-day challenge - getting into the routine of daily shaving for 30 days so it becomes a natural experience. And it gives you and everyone else time to adjust to your new (and improved) appearance.

I suspect this is just the primer you need to initiate the other changes you want in your life.

If you've read through many of the topics here you've seen a lot of guys who were "on the edge" about shaving, and after as little as a few days they've written how they should not have waited ... and wished they'd done this years ago.

It's your head. It's your life. It's time for you to take control of it.

Don't wait. Another day gone by is another day of delay and missed opportunity.

I wish you well, and I hope you will post here regularly as you continue your journey.

If you read much on this site you will see several common threads.

1. Stories like your's.

2. The hard part lasts until you take the razor to your head.  After the first swatch across your scalp and you can't go back; the rest is easy.

3. Just about everyone says, "Why did I wait so long", or "why did I struggle with this".

4. Most are extremely satisfied with a shaved bald head.

Welcome to SBG.  We look forward to seeing your profile picture change and match the rest of us! (bald).

Like the others have said, you won't know it until you've tried. After you've done the deed you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Find a good razor, shave your head and enjoy the freedom!

Oh yeah, welcome to the SBGs too;)

Dude, you really can rock the bald look. I bet that you feel incredibly liberated. Must have been such a freeing experience to not only have a barber shave your head but then to go all the way bald. Way cool man

I used Schick triple blade and edge advance shaving gel. I imagined it gliding smoothly but it doesnt slice any hair when you don't apply any pressure on the razor. I guess my razor sucked.

I had razor burns after, and some cuts on those pimples on my scalp. Running water on my head stings like hell. It's weird that I liked the pain.

You look great. And what is really telling - in your (hairy) avatar you have a grimace, in the first photo after you shaved you're smiling. You look so much more at ease with yourself. Congratulations!

Wow, nice transformation.

Bald looks very good on you.  Remember the 30 day rule.

Sounds like you are headed for bald for life. :-)

The razor burns will take care of themselves with practice.

The tan will come.

Head shape looks good to me.

wow thanks guys. Just got home from the gym, and greeted mom "Hi". She just got home from her work, and she said my bald look is ugly; it would be harder to land a job with that, she said.

I said, I was stressed out with my thinning dome, and shaved it. Don't worry Ma, it will grow back.- with that said, I cannot promise to go by the 30 day rule of shaving everyday, but I'm keeping it short.

Well done mate, you rock the sly look! Welcome to the family  O0

I am glad that our brothers were able to help you come to the right decision, especially when just over a month ago some of them were in the exact same position you were!

Now just stick to the 30 day rule and your scalp will get used to the regular shaving,  and so will your family and friends. Trust me when they see how happy you are with the new you, they will grow to love the new look too!

Good luck with your other life goals, feel free to post join in the conversations, and to tell us all about your reactions and feeling about your new look.

Seems you posted before I could get my post done :P

Your mum will come to like it, trust me it does not make you look ugly at all, her response seems to be a natural reaction to something that is strange or a little different. Also being sly does not hamper your chance of getting a job, if you read Paul's post recently you will see that he pasted his pre-selection interview for a job he has applied for. Getting a job is all about confidence, and if you walk in their sly and happy, then you are almost certain to win any job you want!  O0

Oh and about shaving every day, you don't have too, I only shave every other day, and I still think it is fine. You just have to deal with the velcro for a bit until you shave again.

Waveflow, not to worry.

It's a new hairstyle and that always takes a little time to adjust to.  And while you are adjusting, don't overlook the freedom you've given yourself now that you no longer have to worry about thinning hair, combovers, styling, and all that.

Sly - whether shaved to the scalp or a buzz cut - really is carefree and never looks careless.

Looks great dude . I have to totally disagree with the comment on which your mother made though about finding a job. Some of the most powerful men in the world are bald :-)

After quitting my last Job I have not yet updated my resume. Maybe, my thinning dome restricted me from acting on my life. I hated my last job, now I doubt if internal auditing is for me.

Wow! Yes please, hire me. Anything accounting will do. :D Now a SLY boss will be awesome.

My Dad just got home. He went to my room with a smile in his face.. he asked if I was OK; What where you thinking? Why did you did that?

I just smiled and said, It will grow back; don't you worry. My dad is cool with it. Maybe I can convince him to go sly too. He's working with a comb over ever since I was a kid.

Youve made some MASSIVE progress since your first post! Im sure that the head will de-sensitize soon, use some non scented moisturiser.

Since I ditched the system and went buzzed Ive noticed that there are thousands of guys who are going Sly or buzzing. Especially younger guys.

Your parents will come round eventually.

And don't forget a 'balm' or 'head lube glossy' or 'aloe vera gel' after the shave.

Witch hazel is also a nice astringent prior to the above treatments.  (witch hazel does not sting or such).

The after shave balm is almost like putting on hand cream to soothe chapped hands.

I am so late for this party but let me jump in and welcome you to the bald brotherhood waveflow. You made the right choice by getting rid of your hair, you look great bald. Been shaving my head fir the past 15 years and my mom still does not like it. You should update your profile pic and show off that shine.
