Many of you have heard my fears before, but I have new situations now and would like new opinions please since I haven't been around for a while and I see some new faces. I am a 25, soon to be 26, yo male RN BSN who works in the homecare field. I work for a differend agency than the last time I was here because since I have logged in I have been layed off from one job and gotten another and gotten married to my sweetheart Ashley. I have always kept my hair shorter, but enough to past down every morning. Ashley told me last night if I wanted to cut my hair off then " DO IT!" Another issue is without thinking, I went and got a confederate flag tattooed on my chest. I like the flag but not what some people have made it represent. I am afraid if I " GO SLY" that this might have an impact on my career and I can't afford to lose this job, and I don't want anyone to think that I'm a racist when I take my shirt off because I'M NO RACIST!!!! Any help or suggestions in the decision of wether to have hair or not would be great!

Why would u get a tattoo without thinking in the first place man? If it bothers you that much im sure some tattooist would be able to cover it up. Surely u cant see it through a shirt either ?

A certain faction will definitely think you are racist. The CSA Battle Flag has unfortunately become a symbol for that to certain groups. I doubt that shaving your head will have an impact on your career. By the way, the flag of the CSA is totally different than the battle flag.

hotrn ... but I agree with bobster, unless you work with your chest exposed that should not be an issue. Many employers in my area prohibit visible tattoos (rightly or wrongly) and the guys just wear appropriate shirts which cover the areas (most at issue is arm/wrist tattoos so long-sleeve shirts are popular).
When you are "off the clock" and away from your work place tattoo shouldn't be an issue with your employer. Is it?

I am on call today, but I have come into the office to pickup some paperwork and my boss lady said that her husband shaves his head daily and he loves it and if I came in with a shaved head it wouldn't be a problem with her!!!!! Now the issue is trying to get up the rocks to do it!

Before you read this I am going to warn you that I am going to be brutally honest so if you get offended by my comment on your thread I suggest that you stop reading now.
1st of all... I am a very proud RN who has been head shaving for 5 years and I have NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER had a negative issue on sporting a super, slick dome. Matter of fact... a lot of my patients initially think I am a doctor.
With that said... you have several posts on "questioning" about what others will think about you shaving your head.
If shaving your dome is what you want to do than JUST DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not worry about anyone else!!!!!
I can understand if this was your 1st post on SBGs about this similar topic but you have been a member here since 2008!!! Until U stop concerning yourself on what others think than you will continue to be uncomfortable about yourself.
You are a thirsty man and I have lead you to an ice cold glass of spring water. It's up to you whether you drink it or not. Keep us posted on your road to slyness. O0

Speaking as a Southerner, you're exactly right. That flag represents what some people have made it to represent. You're advertising that you're a white supremacist. Not good form, friend.

I agree with the others. If you're happy being sly and your boss says it won't be an issue at work, go for it. There's no reason not to.
About the tat: If you insist upon going shirtless in public there are bound to be people who will think you're racist regardless of whether or not you have hair. Get used to it. And I have to echo the question "Why would you get a tattoo without thinking about it first?"

I also initially worried about my professional image. For about two seconds... ::) My patients dig their bald OBGYN. Stop worrying and do the deed dude.

DUde- BReak out the clippers and razor and do what you know you want ! You just got official permission to do it from you employer !!!! Thats all you need! WOrry about the tattoo another time and keep your shirt on at work ! Now enjoy that freshly shaved bald head you wanted !!! Post a picture today !!

I have a flag on my back as well. I don't care if people think I'm racist so be it that's life.

When I see a professional in the healthcare field, I just want someone who is professional and will give me the care that I need....I could care less what's on their head...Hell I wouldn't mind a sly female nurse myself! As far as the flag goes...hasn't it been almost 150 years since the civil war ended? I look more at what's in a person's heart not what's on their head/body. Getting back to topic, isn't doing something for yourself more fun when you do it for you and not for someone else's approval?
Your wife seems supportive...which is a good thing considering all the sob stories I hear about "My wife doesn't want me to shave my head" or "My wife wants me to grow my hair back" etc. Looks like the only thing stopping you is you...Just do it!

Having your head shaved should not affect your career either way. Infact, I think being a bald-by-choice male nurse will actually help your career - definitely will give you more confidence. Just go for it, man.

It only takes rocks to shave your head the first time. Probably like getting a tattoo for the first time. After that, it's a piece of cake. And it's nice having cake every day!

OK! Here's my solution to my whole delemia: I started last night trimming my hair down. I cut the sides down to a 1/8 and the top to a 1/4 inch and in a week or two I'm going to go shorter untill it's all gone! This will give my family and friends and me the time needed to get use to my not having haie and I can gain a little color to my scalp while we have some nice days left.

are you working with your shirt off ,if u are push up make it look good . u can get a cover up for the ink. take care

If you dress professionally for your job and are well-groomed, the bald dome will look completely appropriate, not scary at all. Take Warhawk's advice on that.
