Title: On the fence? Think I created it....
Post by: oxfordjon on August 27, 2012, 06:54:06 AM
Hey guys, been lurking for far too long.

So I had the courage to do a number 1 buzz, which went well.

Then didn't have the courage to go any further, so my hair greeeeeeeeew.

And is now something like this :

Really wanna go bald, but kind of need to pluck up the courage to sit at the barbers and go for it and not say "well I don't know" when I get told "Are you sure?!"

Bit of help will go a long way.

PS did anybody's style totally change when they decided to go bald?

Hello Oxfordjon

Welcome to this forum, I trust you will get the advice and encouragement you are seeking right here...

What are your motives for wanting to go "Sly?"  If you just want to do it for a different hairstyle, then it can be a bit daunting as you have no "reason" when people ask you why you did it.  However, most people these days just ask why you did it, only to make conversation, not to tease or mock.  Also, you will find that if you are curious to do it, your curiosity will eventually get the better of you until you try it.

See how the no 1 buzz cut goes for a while, read some stories here on the forum, and see if that will encourage you to go totally Sly.

Good luck with whatever your decision is.

Just do it man. Like you said with the buzz cut it grows back in. Best thing ive ever done. My style has stayed the same. Nothing has changed but my inner confidence has went through the roof give

Since you already tried the #1 buzz cut you can go further trimming your hair without any guard attached and finish with a razor.
The buzz looks good on you so I have no worries that you'll pull off the sly look.
Regarding the style... yes, my hair style has changed, now I'm BBC and I'm keeping it; but your style changes... only if you want it to change.

Hey oxfordjon,

You look great either way and just like the previous members said: it will grow back. If you're not confident enough to let a barber / hair dresser do it, then why don't you do it yourself? No need for making an appointment and deciding on the spot, you can do it in your own time at home. Just be sure to use a new razor.

About changing styles: mine changed for about 50% I guess. I'm still wearing some of the same clothes I did before, but the new things I buy are completely different from what I would have bought before I shaved my head. I used to wear a lot of black, 'fashion' t-shirts and skinny jeans most of the time. Since going sly I haven't bought anything black anymore, no more skinny jeans and I finally have a nice collection of casual and dress shirts.

Take it from someone who has been there. If you're still on the fence after all this time, its because you really want to try shaving your head. It's going to eat away at you until you try it. If you don't like it, grow your hair back and you will at least gain some satisfaction at having given it a try.

Oxfordjohn, you are a good looking young man, you will look fine with or without hair. However, since you have the urge to go smooth, might as well try it. It will grow back if you don't like what you see.

As for the style change, I'd say it is more on the attitude change, the style just follows after.

Mate, the feeling you get from finally taking to it all off will be amazing. I know you are nervous now, but as everyone else has said, if you truly want to go sly, then it is just going to eat at you until you try it! So you may as well give it a go sooner rather then later  O0

Hi Jon,

I think you've got yourself so worked up over this that it's become a HUGE deal for you. It's not. It's a haircut!

Paraphrasing your previous posts:
01/2011 I want to be BBC
04/2011 I want to shave sly
10/2011 I really want to
08/2012 I really want to

So for 18 months you've had this very strong desire which is not resolved. Not good to let that fester.

Of your pictures, I think the one with the buzz looks more natural and carefree. And I suspect Sly will look just as good or better. Particularly with the relaxed personality which will appear because you've finally answered the question: "What's it like to be Sly?"

So down to the practical matter: What's the downside of going into the bathroom now and shaving Sly? You've got to answer that one, but my guess (from your posts) is that your total concern is about what others will think or say. You've mentioned both family and friends reactions. Why does that matter enough to control your action? It's your head and your decision.

Best advice is to do it now (that will release you from the indecision) and commit to the 30-day challenge which will give you and everyone around you time to integrate the "New You" into their frames of reference.

After 30 days, if it's not you just let it grow out. No big deal.

Do you not have other things which warrant your mental energy? Anything from solving "Global Climate Change" to simply having fun.

Just do it.

No offense intended, but this doesn't sound committed or very convincing:
"I think this is it..."
"It's going to happen when ..."

How about shaving now, before you return to Uni? Scratch that itch!

Just sayin'

Four words: You can do it!

Six words: "Young or old...bald is BOLD". I am 71 and felt BOLD when I shaved 4 years ago...you look so very young and now you too can be BOLD. With that HeadBlade in hand you can start the SLY 30-DAY TRY. Like many members said, you can always let it grow back and buzz it! GOOD LUCK- keep us posted.

I shaved my head and pierced my ears, I guess those were my only stylistic changes, but I have been getting more female attention as a baldy moreso than when I had hair.

Ok dude. You've just got to do it. I think your going to be really happy with yourself once it's all said and done. Just walk  into a barber shop, sit down, say the magic words 'shave my head', and bingo your bald. It'll be fun and easy, something you'll never forget.

Oxfordjohn, just do the deed already bro.  We all can tell you really want to.  What do you have to lose?  Either you love it and stay sly or your hair grows back.  Either way it's a win-win for you.

Once you get the itch, the only way is doing the thing! You'll feel better, people will not care a thing. You have almost nothing to lose... relax and go all the way! It's a wonderful sensation! You'll want to repeat it over and over.
