Hey guys,
I'm on the fence of shaving/buzzing my head because MPB hit me hard in the last few years. I had a buzz cut in my youth and early 20s and was fine with it, but I was more into bodybuilding back then and went from 205 to 150 lately. Also, I have a quite bony face with high cheekbones and very little fat (I look normal to other people when my bf% is too high, actually) to begin with.
When I buzzed my hair short for some time last year, the reactions of my female friends were horrible. All said I should go for a longer hair cut. Maybe my buzz cut was too long back then, which might have made the MPB more obvious. My male friends seemed to like it, they said I looked younger.
What do you guys say? This is an actual pic with already short hair, but not the whole nine yards, of course. I never was too self-conscious about my looks, but the female reactions last year shocked me a bit.
Thanks,
Stanley

Hello and welcome Stan
Yes, sometimes a buzz cut (no 1 or less) can actually make the MPB look worse, as you say.
The only way to find out if this is for you is to try going completely bald and then seeing how it looks on you. Take up the 30 day challenge by keeping it bald for 30 days to give yourself and those around you a chance to get used to it.
I too had many fears, "My ears stick out too much, my head is too big, I will look like a convict", and, and, and...I just did it and I was surprised at how accepting people were, and how much I loved it. Now I am Sly for life...
Unfortunately there is no "easy" way to embrace the Sly look, except by taking the plunge, and very importantly, not caring about people’s comments. It is not as bad as you think, as most people don’t really give a damn. Many just mention it as a conversation piece, rather than to be critical. You will soon get a feel if this is for you.
As regards the “girls” thing, your personal hygiene, attitude, level of self confidence and the way you carry yourself are far more important to a girl than how much hair you have or have not got, trust me.
-
Hey Waine,
thanks for the reply and the warm welcome!
As regards the “girls” thing, your personal hygiene, attitude, level of self confidence and the way you carry yourself are far more important to a girl than how much hair you have or have not got, trust me.
That what I was thinking all of my life, and when I recognized there isn't enough hair to style for a hairstyle anymore, I just buzzed it off without a second thought. It was just that the reactions were so horrible back then that I started thinking about it. One girl that nagged me back then asked me out at that time though, so "horrible" might have another meaning to a woman...but what do I know. ;)
-
Welcome Stan,
I second all that waine wrote.
Girls who knew you "with hair" may react oddly to a shaved head - some are really attracted, others not. I think it's important to recognize that you want someone who is attracted to the "real" you. What will happen if you get serious with someone and later have no hair due to natural causes? Take control of the issue now.
More importantly, though, is that girls who don't currently know you will not have a "past image" to compare with and will accept you for your magnificent, slick dome. And that is the "real you."
If I were in your position I would simply go straight to Sly and make a clean break with hair issues. You will discover a depth of confidence you never knew you had. The freedom from obsessing over hair is something which can only be experienced.
Keep us posted on how it goes. Ask questions. Contribute to others' posts. This is a community in the truest sense. Support, encouragement, (international) friendships, and laughter.

Make a commitment and go back to the gym!
You should be more concerned about your 150 pound weight...... now theres a problem.

Thanks guys, highly appreciated!

Oh, I'm still hitting the gym hard - but I'm also more into combat sports the last few years, and with all that I just couldn't maintain that muscle mass I built up in the past. I'm sidelined completely with a AC separation at the moment though, so I guess I'll get more meat on my bones anyway. ;)

Welcome Stan! I really can't add on to the wise words that Waine, Free at Last and Frontier Guy wrote, but what I will tell you is that this is a cool forum that welcomes everyone with open arms....I will say that you only live once....give it a try for 30 days and if YOU don't like it, you can always grow it back! Good Luck!

Hi Stan: 1st of all welcome to the sly fraternity. Glad that ya joined us. The sly brothers have given U some great advice. Keep us posted on your road 2 slyness. U are gonna love it when you are ready.

Stan, "Free at last" is a classic example of a guy gone Sly, who had similar fears. All he has had since going Sly is a "newfound confidence" and positive remarks from the fairer sex. We literally watched him transform here and it is so encouraging to us and to others fence sitters.
Its awesome that you are sharing your experience Free at Last. You can help people with your positive outlook.

Hi Stan! Welcome to the Forum!
I think you would look great shaved. A bald, confident man that strides into the room with his head up will attract all the women he can handle. Do not worry about the words of a few.
-
Welcome, the guys have given you the right path.
And, never forget, you can do this, you can be in charge. Or, the only other alternative is let Mother Nature continue to do it her way--but, she's pretty messy and leaves a fringe, horseshoe or whatever you want to call it. It is a certainty no babe is going to say your fringe turns her on, take that to the bank.

It's sort of like skydiving. After that first step you wonder why you didn't do it sooner. That first step does take some balls though.Welcome to the group.
-
You got some great advice here. Welcome to the forum.
-
I think you would look great with a shaved head - - -and you will look YOUNGER - - -
-
Ha, you guys are great! I'm on vacation in August and will give sly a try! Can't wait!
-
do what you think it's best. ignore the others. try it for one month.
-
Hey! I'm 150 lbs. LOL..but I'm short.
I say shave it...I think you'll look better without the hair, and most likely it will make you look younger.
-
Hi Stan and welcome to our community.
I think you'd look great sly. Just clip it on down and enjoy the freedom. 8)
-
Welcome Stan, it's great to have you with us, looking at your pic, sly will really suit!
-
Welcome to the forum Stan. All the bro's have given you great advice. I will only add that you go ahead and shave it before you go on vacation, give yourself a chance to get used to it.
During your vacation you will feel more confidence than ever and you'll look forward to shaving every day.
Put the new you out there; stand tall and proud and show off the smooth dome! O0
-
Welcome to the bald brotherhood Stan. You have the face and the head for it. August is just a few days away. Happy shaving.
-
Hi Stanley, I will have to agree with the guys try the 30 day rule. I have been shaving my head for a very long time and I believe I get more looks from women and men and smiles too with a bald head. Good luck and post a pic when you have done the deed.

Hey guys,
I know it's been a looooong time, but I had some career stuff that kept me from shaving my head: I worked in a small law firm (potential employer) the last three months and just had my final oral examination, so I didn't want to take any chances - the law crowd is quite conservative in general, sadly.
Well, after some negotiation today, it seems very likely that the potential employer will be my actual employer in January (yay), so I figured I could give this sly thing a try finally. If shtf, the hair will be back in January (had a buzz cut anyway, lately), so I did it.
Well, it still burns a bit, and it seems like I have some bumps on my head I didn't notice before, but hey, I feel pretty good in general. I'll definitely shave it a few more days and wait and see how it feels in daily life. I'll let my facial hair grow out too.
If I decide to keep it like this in the long run, I'll let it grow out to a few mm until January and gradually buzz it shorter until I'm ready to go completely sly again. My (potential) new employer does not seems to care that much about formalities (one associate is sporting a power donut, a full beard and an earring), but a drastic change like this might be too much in the beginning, so I'll take it slow.
Will post some pics once the redness is gone! :)
It's definitely a great experience and I think every man should shave his head even once in his life. Liberating, that's for sure. O0
Best Regards!

Welcome Stan,
Congrads on your new job. You are so right SLY is super great. I have a couple attorney friends that shave their heads and they both look great and are well respected, as far as attorneys go LOL ! Just kidden. Look forward to seeing your pictures.
-
I agree with the views that a buzzcut can make a MPB look intense . Personally like a guy with a shaved MPB and woul be ok with that look meself goo all the way i guarantee girls will luv it , ignore rude people thaey are not your friends .
-
Glad you made the leap, apparently bald headed men are considered more powerful and trustworthy when compared to balding men (can't remember the university that did the study), so it's definitely good in your line of work!
-
Thanks, guys! Few reactions: A male friend of mine said it looks "fresh", a female friend said it looks "somewhat sexy". ;) I even showed it to my mother, and after the first shock, she said it was "okay". Who would have thought. ;)
I feel more comfortable minute by minute, even the massive shark-fin-like protrusion on top of my skull doesn't bother me any more - it's not like I looked like Brad Pitt before. ;D

Looks good man. Walk Tall and Be Proud. Because you are now SLY !!!!
-
Stanley, glad you did it, it looks good.
IMO it's a professional haircut. It's a keeper.
-
definitely a keeper, and if that's a 'shark fin' then I'm the queen of sheeba.
-
You look great man, you still have time to do the 30 day rule before January. Give it a crack for the full 30, not just "a couple of days" and you'll realise it isn't really that big of a deal. Heck if your prospective employer is willing to let a guy walk around with a donut, you should be fine sly!
-

Pretty good Statement !
And sly works for you and you seem to like it !
-
Looks really good on you.
And I agree with Beardman ... you should give it the full 30-day challenge to truly experience it.
-
From One Bald Stan to Another : AWESOME LOOK !
-
Thanks a lot, everyone, this has to be the kindest forum I've ever visited!
Third shave, minimal redness, but I can't get it completely smooth - I never knew that getting a pique polo shirt over my head could become a problem. ;D
-
Nice man, are you shaving with or against the grain? because to get the closest shave you will want to go against the grain. But it sounds like you will want to let your head condition a bit first before you do that or otherwise you will just make your irritation worse.
-
I shaved with and against the grain right off the bat, but there still minimal stubble. I tried a Wilkinson Protector and two different safety razors, no difference. Said razors all produce completely smooth skin when used on my beard - maybe a special razor like the Headblade will help?
-
You look great shaved smooth Stan K. It is definitely a keeper. How about using the picture as your avatar?
-
Excellent idea! ;)
-
As others have suggested, give it the full 3p0 days. The shave will get smoother.
Yes, the poll shirts can be like Velcro on stubble head.
Experience, fresh blades and some patience will help with the smoothness.
You look sharp.Welcome

I'm a huge fan of the HeadBlade and am quite satisfied with the result. To me, it seems Baby Butt Smooth but the feeling doesn't last more than a few hours because of hair growth. Just something to live with.
-
I have been shaving for years and have tried most shavers including HeadBlade - -and I have found Shick Xtreme3 to be the ABSOLUTE BEST - -It is worth a try - -I told my brother to try the Xtreme3 and he too thinks it is the BEST - - - - I get a very sensative shave and it lasts longer than any other blade that I have used. - - -What you see (in my photo) is what you get - - -the shine is great and I really like that.
-
I'm a fan of HeadBlade Sport. I get a super smooth shave with no irritation.
-
I'll give the Headblade a try, but mangosink12572's shiny head makes me want to buy the xtreme3 asap. ;)

I think the shine depends more on the post shave products than on the razor itself. Here are 2 photos of me, both are in the morning a little while after shaving that morning with the HB Sport and then using either HeadLube Matte or HeadLube Glossy.
I usually use the Matte. I find the Glossy leaves a good shine, but also that a shine seems to enhance the shadow effect.

That HeadLube Matte looks like a nice product! I managed to get a super smooth shave out of nowhere with my same old razor, but I shouldn't have used Clubman Special Reserve on my head, it burns much more on the scalp than on my face... :XX

Stan, the HeadLube Matte works very well. It doesn't completely cut out the shine, just tones it down. I also have a pretty oily scalp so it may work different for you.
