Title: Your track of the week?
Post by: waine on July 20, 2012, 01:38:01 PM
I know music has probably been done here, but some threads go dead and there is nothing wrong with lighting up a new one especially if you love music? Everyone loves music, right? Have you ever met a single individual on planet earth who does not enjoy music?

Young at heart, I always have and still enjoy a wide range of music, especially contemporary pop and rock.  It’s something that stuck with me from the eighties. Music just gets better and better these days...

Radio has always pleased me as a young lad.  I still go to sleep with the radio playing my favourite station -- 5fm, softly in the background. Radio is part of my furniture.

Lately I have thin headphones plugged into my ears on my soft pillow, relaxed with my bald warm head resting while music plays me to sleep.  Talk radio is also very enjoyable. I watch VH1 on cable for short bursts almost daily and keep track of pop music especially.

Am I the only one wired like this?

So, why don’t you tell us what your listening to, what music is doing it for you right now? – currently, this week? Any CD’s are you listening to in your car?  What is your favourite song on the radio at the moment?  It can be anything, if Country is your thing, let us hear...Jazz, Rock, “Dub step”, Pop, R&B you name it!

I think it will be awesome for us baldies to get a feel of what music we enjoy, or get an international vibe of the music world by exchanging our flavour of the week.

Here is / are my songs of the week:

Rudimental feat. John Newman - "Feel the Love"
Fun - "Some Nights"

What’s yours?

Great topic, waine!

Have you ever met a single individual on planet earth who does not enjoy music?

You'd be surprised. I've run into several in my life. I'm under the firm belief that people who do not enjoy music have no souls. :/O IMO, it's one of the greatest things humanity has ever produced in it's entire history.

Just throwing in: Right now at the moment I have RATM - "Freedom" playing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk2uObQDKtw). Classic angry anti-political track.

So on topic, I've been playing Boston - "Peace of Mind" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaR2JeqxQDY) quite a bit this week. Just can't seem to get enough of it. Love the musicianship and vocal harmony on that one.

CoC - "Clean my wounds" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytCAdN4HvMs) has also been getting my attention a few times this week. Love the riff that carries through the song.

Well, there's a lot of trad NO brass jazz bands now, one of the greats of the tradition died.  His funeral is, to put it mildly, unique.

http://www.nola.com/music/index.ssf/2012/07/uncle_lionel_batiste_gets_send.html

Because we're experiencing extremely heavy rain, street flooding etc., the second line has been postponed til Monday.  But, my guess is that you've never quite seen anyone "laid out" for a wake the way he has been--I know I haven't.

For funerals--it's hard to match a NO Jazz Funeral.

Just yesterday when I was on FB Pat Travers posted a link to one of my all-time favorites. It's not a new song by any means, it was popular back in the early 70s but it still hovers near the top of my list of faves.
The song is "Lazy" by Deep Purple. Travers posted it because Jon Lord, the keyboard man of Deep Purple, recently passed on.

Down below is the audio from YouTube. There are live videos on there as well including one from 1999 which shows Jon Lord dominating the stage. The link I posted includes guitar work by Rickie Blackmore but only shows the album cover. Great song though.

I have 2 favorite songs right now both by a group called Tinariwen from the west African country of Mali. The songs are Nar Djenetbouba and Mataraden Anexan. The group's got a worldwide following but I don't think they get much airtime on the radio.

I've really been enjoying Incubus this week. Because I'm a guitar teacher, I'm often teaching what I'm listening to or vice versa. I'm a bluesman at heart and love Robert Johnson, Son House, and my idol BB King!

I've been listening the Pat Metheny (Still Life CD) a lot lately.  Am also enjoying The Clash's Rock the Casbah and London Calling.  Kind of at the opposite ends of the spectrum, but that's what's great about music - you can enjoy all kinds.

I grew up with the radio on constantly.  My mother used to say a house without music is like a tomb.  She would turn the kitchen radio on when she got up in the morning and it stayed on until night, always tuned to the same "middle of the road" music station that would edit out any lyrics it felt were inappropriate!

How do you guys feel about Eric Bibb? I absolutely love his music and when I saw him live it was a life changing experience. His album 'Get On Board' is such a good blend of gospel, roots blues, and folk.

The track 'Pockets, is my missus and my song.

I flash over to "VH1" every evening on cable TV at some stage or another.  It is where I get my little music video fix for the day.  I also like "Guess the year" on "VH1", where they play a song and you have to guess which year it is from.  Sometimes my wife, daughter and I have a little competition going to see who gets closest to the correct year.

The radio plays all day in my office.  The radio is on in my garage when I work outside.  The radio is on when I cook supper.  It is on when I fall asleep.  Music is like air to me.

I hardly buy CD’s anymore…

There is a song from Kansas "Dust in the wind" i use just to listen this song and love it,  but now i truly understand the meaning- one versus especially it goes something like " and all your money won't another minute buy "there is something that you can't really understand if you aren't in a risk to lose somebody (or someone  you love) :(  we gotta cherish every moment spent with our love ones.... And Mike and Mechanics song "In the living years" can teach us something

Here is what think I know about Emerson Lake and Palmer (old memory  ??? )-they use to make a great music like www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASo4qltChjM and then they realised that they need something more "radio friendly"(new wave swept them ) so after longer conversation they even had a honest fist fight (no joking) that's how a group "Asia" was born -Asia was still great but not ELP great www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlTvWvfEMxE

OUTSTANDING video!!

And, for me, it reiterates what I always say about different peoples around the world.

And I quote (myself): "I believe that people all around the world are basically the same. The peoples of the world aren't the problem..... the politicians governing those people are." (Endquote)

Is it even legal to quote yourself??  ???

This great Aussie metal band from Brisbane has been on high rotation since I picked up their album from their Melbourne, Australia performance on Saturday night. They are not your traditional metal band, but something that I think if given the chance they could make it big, even in the mainstream music scene!

The sound technician on the night had massive problems with the lead singers mic. The whole first song we couldn't hear her, then after switching mics, we could only just hear her over the music... but I heard enough to know I had to buy their cd.

Went on a jog earlier today (testing a bad achilles and calf), and decided to put together a compilation of my two favorite metal bands, Iron Maiden & Metallica. The songs:

1. Sanctuary (IM)
2. Four Horsemen (Metallica)
3. Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (IM).....awesome song with no airplay.
4. Cyanide (Metallica)
5. Reachout (IM)...Adrian Smith singing on a B Side song
6. No Remorse (Metallica)
7. Sun & Steel (IM)
8. Hit the Lights (Metallica).

Good stuff.

Good stuff indeed! The other week I caught one of the biggest Metallica tribute bands in Australia, they have put on an amazing show every time I have seen them. The time before that they actually came to town with an Iron Maiden tribute... boy was that an amazing night, it was almost as if you were at a Maiden/Metallica concert!

After seeing the French Movie "Les Yeux Sans Visage" (Eyes Without A Face).....it compelled me to listen to Billy Idol's 1984 hit "Eyes Without A Face". The movie was pretty good 8/10, but I finally deciphered what the female background singer was saying during the song's chorus.....As creepy as the song sounds, I like the interpretation of the song (or at least what I think is the interpretation of the song) which is pretty much about being angry, then forgiving about a lost love....

Yeah, I think the 'chair have gone on one of these "indefinate hiatus's", which usually means "the rest of the band don't understand where I am going with this so I'll go solo untill I see sense and realise it's not really working out and that big tax bill is looming so best get then band back together for some "come back" gigs!"

My band has been on "indefinate hiatus" since 2001, strangely we're yet to have any money spinning offers to get back together......hmmmmm

Music would be a bit of an exaggeration!!  ;D

We just were a no gimmicks straight up guitar rock band really, we all grew up listening to bands like Nirvana, The Pixies, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Silverchair etc.... so I guess we were probably edging towards "grunge", we all had the long hair too!!

We were destined to fail, we went through a few different line ups eventually getting the singer/guitarists brother in on lead guitar and my brother in on bass, so we had 4 members from 2 sets of parents which guarenteed it just ended up as one big arguement, especially after I.......erm......borrowed the singers girlfriend for the night!!!  ;D

Love the song.....though I'm just now getting to the point where I can tolerate both Eminem and Lil Wayne. Is it just me or do people ALWAYS have to sample previously recorded songs to make a new song today? FWIW this particular song samples Haddaway's  "What is love".

That being said, I LOVE De La Soul, and most old school hip hop for that matter, and they knew how to sample tastefully and with skill. I know hip hop seem to be a bit out of my usual genres, but what can I say, I feel it, as long as it's good music.

Not sure how many of you guys have heard of this band, but they've recently (about a month or so ago) made their way to Aussie radio, and I have fallen in love with this band, they are a folk rock group from Iceland called Of Monsters and Men. They are a truly awesome band, and even though I'm a metalhead, this track is my song of the week:

Many of you know that I'm a huge Warren Zevon fan. This song was written by Zevon as a gift to his Family shortly before he died. He knew for about a year that he had a terminal lung disease.

Two weeks ago at my Dad's funeral my son Chris played this song... just him and a guitar. My Dad never got to see my son play live so this was an amazing gift to my Dad and everyone attending the funeral.

A great song, by a great musician. For you Dad.... I miss you:

This week I have been listening to "Jackie Blue" by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils (1975?)....Beautiful little song with catchy chords and lyrics....To really appreciate this song, you have to listen to the album (long) version, the radio version edits out the most critical verse in the song which goes:

Every day in your indigo eyes
I watch the sunset but I don't see it rise
Moonlight and stars in your strawberry wine
You'd take the world but you won't take the time

I just hate it when the radio plays the short version...(lucky for me I do have the album version on a copulation CD) and the Smashing Pumpkins just butchered this song up to me in their cover version (Sorry, no offense Smashing Pumpkins fans ;D >:D)
Side note if you ever listen to the song....That's a GUY singing in high falsetto, not a female!

I've had a great week filled with great news, so this song by Kid Rock and Uncle Kracker (two of my favorite artists) is a good fit to this week.  One of the pieces of good news is that Uncle Kracker will be performing down the street from my house next week for only $10!

Unless you are talking about metal then I have to agree with you, all the pop music these days is about quantity not quality...

AMEN!

Been listening to Kenny Chesney's latest album, and this song hit home with me after my dad passed on (too much death going on these days).
This song is "Sing Em Good My Friend" and is dedicated to a friend of KC's that is dying of cancer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve3vD8xtaBQ

Wonderful song. For all of those that bag on "pop country", there are still quite a few songs this new genre of country has produced that are quite good.

I guess that maybe I am biased to but 98% of remakes (covers) of songs are never as good as the original, I guess I have to get used to heavy metal (Smashing Pumpkins isn't a bad band, I just don't care for their cover of this song). I think it's because 1. they skip the aforementioned critical verse in the song and 2. They altered some of the words from the original in their version....my 0.02 (We might disagree here, but I'm still cool with you, Beardman! ;D)

Well... Red did a great rendition of Duran Duran's Ordinary World. Better, actually. I really like them singing it, and I hadn't heard the original. Then I'm walking through a store one day and the original is playing over the loudspeakers, and I'm thinking "What is this junk?" So yeah, that would be in the 2% I suppose.

All posts are meaningful...don't be so hard on yourself....That's the fun of the forum hearing various opinions. If there was a song that fell in the 2% that the remake was better than the original, I would have to say it's Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" Even the original artist, Dolly Parton, said Whitney's version was better!

Shameless plug I know, but I thought maybe you'd consider this for yours this week. White Rabbit, Black Monkey, is a side project masterminded by my good friend RJ (he came up with the name... just saying). The audio quality sucks because we just had ambient mics in the room. Let me know what you think.

I saw The Voice do their tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy by covering Hallelujah. I'd have to say my favorite cover of that song was done by John Cale.

On a side note, I've been playing The Lumineers album pretty much nonstop for a week or so. My favorite track on there has to be a song called Big Parade.

That is amazing, the asian instruments gel so well with the banjo and guitar, I would never have thought to put them together, but now I hear them, it's a perfect match

This week, I'm listening to a cool song from the Supremes on the oldies station today titled "Nathan Jones" (1971?) This was the group's biggest hit after Diana Ross left the group a couple of years prior. Although I am not a fan of covers/remakes, Bananarama did a nice cover version of the song in 1987 (It also helps that they were pretty hot women back then). This is one of the rare times a remake is just as good as the original if not better, IMO.

Shuggie Otis is amazing - when you think he recorded his album all by his own and played all of the instruments and was one of the first to play with drum computers - so sad that he didn't have more success back then and stopped recording music

here's mine https://soundcloud.com/rhyemusic/sets/debut-album-woman (https://soundcloud.com/rhyemusic/sets/debut-album-woman) - can't wait for the album to be released

I read something online that said Shuggie Otis has another cd coming out in April. I hope it's as good as his earlier stuff.

I've absolutely fallen in love with this artist this week and I just have to share her with someone! I couldn't split the songs so I've got a double this week!
She is an amazing artist from Sweden, her current project though is a 2 person project (if I remember rightly) called "The Knives", Definitely someone to keep an eye on. She might be to out there for mainstream, but definitely worth listening too!

Cheers Matt, I really do have a quite the varied taste in music as you mentioned, I always find it funny how I surprise people when I mention stuff such as this.

The second one is what MADE ME have to go track her down. It is such a fitting to open up the TV series. I'm working my way through her new project, it is so 90's electro pop haha. It is not nearly as eccentric as her Fever Ray works, which is a bit dissapointing!

Hopefully man, mind you I'm a bit older, the band is a bit older (and only one of the original line up are left) but the songs will still be there! I'm more looking forward to meeting up with old friends as it sounds like a load of people who were into them alongside me back in the day will be there too. Plus I'm off work tomorrow so one or two beverages may be consumed!!  `Dr!n#

I just bought Shuggie's new release yesterday. It's a 2 disc set consisting of a reissue of his Inspiration Information cd along with an all new cd called Wings of Love. All in all some really good stuff and well worth the price. (27 tracks for $14.99 US on iTunes.)

Dig that artist!

My song this week has definitely been a song called "Tobacco Island" by Flogging Molly.  I'm not super familiar with this band, but I've been getting into this kind of celtic punk type thing.  The song is very folk sounding and catchy with a nice modern punk twist.
