Title: Im 18 and losing hair, should I?
Post by: Straightupgangs on July 03, 2012, 02:12:47 PM
Well you guys, I'm 18 years old, graduated high school in 2011 and well I think Its pretty obvious I'm going bald. I think Ive been going bald since I was 16 or so. That is when I started to notice my hair was thinning. I denied it at first but In my senior year of high school it started becoming obvious that my hair was thinning and denial was no longer an option. I covered it up with hats and stuff because I had longish hair but that only makes my head uncomfortable and eventually I have to take it off, revealing my receding hairline.

About 4 or 5 months ago I accepted that I was going bald and cut it off. Its pretty obvious I'm going bald because when I let it grow back out it has that thinning look to it I guess its called the M shape or whatever. I thought about using Rogaine or whatever but I don't really believe in taking medications I'm kind of a hippie. It really sucks to be going bald this young and also where I work doesn't allow you to have any facial hair other than a mustache. I try to have an optimistic outlook on things because I mean I have a good life other than this and at least I don't have some kind of debilitating disease but ehh, anyway I came here because I wanted a more "professional" opinion on the matter. So should I?

I was in same position when I was 18 as mine started receding a bit at 16 but there was not this great SBG forum for support back then.  Why don't you alternate between a #2 or #1 or #0 and razor sly smooth because you still have hair to pull both off any buzzed tight cut.  I used to get teased alot by guys my age with full heads of hair, not easy but seems like you got a plan !

I say give it a shot and use a 0 guard. It will grow back. I think you'll be happy with it!

Welcome to SBG, Straightupgangs.

I like the buzz cut more on you than the shaggy hair, so that's already a good indicator you will look good with a bald head. As far as I can see, you have a good face/head shape.

Like stasiu said, you can always gradually buzz it down if you don't want to take the plunge directly.

I know what it feels like to lose your hair at a young age, but you'll find that shaving your head is just another haircut, a very clean and widely accepted haircut. So, unless you're making a living off your hair, don't fret on it too much.

I'd advise buzzing down progressively over the next few weeks (#2, #1, #0, no guard) so you can see what it looks like. Once you've buzzed with no guard, you'll have a very good indication of what full sly will look like.  If at that point you want to try shaving smooth, give it a try.  From your pics, I think you'll look good.

One thing you'll find is that hair grows faster than you think, so if you don't like it short (or smoothly shaved), it will only take a couple weeks to be back to a #1 or #2 length.

One warning: once you get close to being sly by buzzing with no guard, curiousity will make you want to shave your head completely!

You can't mess with the genes.
If pills were so effective and without any side effects then no man would have suffer from the MPB. So... I wouldn't go that way, but I would try to get the most out of it.

Researching about clipper guard size I found this:
Clipper #1/2 is 1.5mm, or 1/16 of an inch
Clipper #1 is 3mm, or 1/8 of an inch
Clipper #2 is 6mm, or 1/4 of an inch

The average hair growth in a month is about 0.5 inches.
Hoping that I got the numbers right, i don't think there's a big difference between a #2 and a #1 so I would give a try to the clippers with no guard attached.

Welcome. I agree with what all the guys said. And I will just add that you will be so much more at ease when you are not worrying about hairloss. There are so many other things in life to devote your energy towards.

I agree with what the other guys have said. Take it off progressively.

I was in the same position as you, but I never even had a thought to shave my head off until a sly friend of the family suggested it to me towards the end of last year (I am 25 now), having said that it took me at least 6 months to act on the advice. If you have already came to that conclusion yourself then I think it is time for you to take the next step. You will feel so much better for it.

As the other guys have said, just knock it down first, it looks like you are already a 2 or 3, so I'd go to a 0 or 1 and see how you like that. you might even be like me and once you have knocked it down that low, just go and grab the razor and finish it off.

Feel free to hang around and look through the wealth of knowledge, stories and anything else you might want to read, and keep us posted on your progress  O0

I'll add that once you go to 0 or "no guard" the difference to shaved is mostly undetectable.

But the feeling between shaved and "no guard" (or 0) is incredible. That feeling alone in the morning makes the entire day better.

Try it. You'll like it.

I second FrontierGuy's comments.  The look is almost the same. The feel of a freshly shaved head, smooth as can be, is incredible.  You'll be rubbing your head all morning, savoring the feel. Even after five months of shaving your head!

It's worth the daily shave.

Well I'd like to thank everyone for the wonderful advice. I probably am going to start shaving it down progressively. Ill keep you guys updated. I think I might try a mohawk first with the sides bald and if I dont like it then I'm just going to cut it all off.

A mohawk will certainly go well with your punk look, and will hide the receeding nicely  O0 And as you said, if you don't like it you can just go full sly!

A gradual buzz can't hurt....even if you never go all the way sly, a buzz would be an improvement.

Whilst I think the advice given here is sound, I have a standpoint that says, "Every man should at least try it once in life."  So my take is, if you are toying with the idea, "Take it all off".  You are young so this will be a perfect opportunity.  Thereafter, you will be the best source of your own advice to yourself.  You will know inside whether you should keep the look or grow it back again.  You have a whole life time ahead of you to experiment.

If you are thinking of shaving your head I'd say go for it. You'll always wonder if you don't. A buzz looks great but a shaved head both looks and feels great.
