Title: Formal Introduction
Post by: SlickInWI on June 08, 2012, 11:31:18 AM
I've posted a few times here already, but I figured I should probably take the time to formally introduce myself. I'm now 35, and despite having thick head of hair up until a few years ago, I've been buzzing my hair for the better part of the past 20 years. Sometimes I'd do it at home, but most of the time I'd go to the only barber who'd ever cut my hair. (My mom has a picture of me balling my eyes out while he gave me my first hair cut.) Then about five years ago, out of the blue, my barber tells me that my hair seemed thinner than it used to. That surprised me, but I didn't think much of it. He said I wasn't balding, just that it wasn't thick any more.

Fast forward to two years ago; my wife was the maid of honor in a wedding and wanted me to grow my hair out for it and try something more "stylish" for some photos. I wasn't crazy about the idea, but she really wanted me to do it so I thought, what's the harm? As my hair grew out, I realized how thin it had gotten. And man, what a pain to maintain. Constantly combing and styling. Checking it in the mirror every trip to the bathroom to make sure it still looked ok. Hair products to make it appear thicker. Shampooing and conditioning. I also noticed, for the first time, the bald spot developing at the back of my head. What was supposed to be stylish and youthful looking just made me feel self-conscious and uncomfortable. I kept that look until the wedding was over. And literally the next morning, I got my trusty Whal clippers out and cut it all off. I immediately felt more confidence than I ever had in the previous three months. I felt like myself again.

So fast forward to six months ago. My lifelong barber finally retired. I always told him that I hope I go bald before he retires. But since that didn't happen, I started to think about going bald-by-choice instead. I started lurking on this forum, researched different products, and finally took the plunge about three weeks ago. And man, what a huge sense of relief once I did. I really felt more confident in my appearance than I have in any other point in my life. I really don't see myself ever going back.

I'm looking forward to checking out forums further and interacting with all of you. Looks like you've got great group of guys here.

Looks great on you!  And I know well what you describe: checking the mirror, styling and shampooing to try to make it look as thick as possible...

It's a great, worry-free look.  Welcome to it.

Welcome Slick. Great shine on that head. I have a regular barber who shaves me to the skin, I am lucky that he is still young and will not be retiring anytime soon.
