4 years ago when I was 18, my dad (whose been a norwood 7 since late 20's) went on a hike together. We stopped to sit on these rocks, and I sat on one and he sat on one a few feet above me, so he was looking down at my head. He says to me "You're gonna be bald!" I touch my head and feel a full head of hair, so I basically shrug off what he had said and forgot about it. 4 years later, I started noticing my hairloss, and that was only 6 months ago. Is it possible that I've been balding since I was 18 and never noticed? Nobody else besides him ever said anything until I pointed it out to a few people a few months ago. I'm wondering if he has some sort of gift of telling bald futures, or if he just managed noticed the baby stages of mpb, that apparently non-bald people can't pick up on. any thoughts guys?

Bald dads know their bald sons. I was like 18 when dad said "I think you better wear a cap for sun protection" as my temples had retreated slightly and the crown was thinning (but I was in denial). Looking back of pictures of dad when he was my age -- the same hairline retreat. Good point there Asher !

I would have to agree...although it seems in some families with multiple sons, somebody escapes the bald bug....When I last had a flattop, granddad noticed my temples were going backward, my dad never really noticed it too much. Unfortunately both left this world before I went sly, but looking back at even my baby pictures, I was going to get bitten by the bald bug sooner or later...

Our hair can be thinning on top for a long time before we notice it. Others may notice under certain lighting conditions, but since we can't see the tops of our own heads, we're often the last to know. ;) I knew mine was starting to thin when I could feel the sun on my scalp. But when I ran my hand over my head, everything still felt hairy. You can feel hair, but you can't really feel that it's getting thinner. Then one day I saw some pictures and was shocked at how little was left.

Funnily, enough I looked at some pre-bald pictures the other night. I was similarly surprised.
OK, got plenty of jokes about my grey hair. But why didn't someone tell me to shave sly before I decide to do so !

Yup AJB, Your dad saw it coming, it was no gift he had, it was from his life experience that he knew that. I hope he is proud of his son today as sly definitely suits you.

It's all about genetics my Friend..... not premonitions.

Experience is the best teacher, and he was letting you know what to expect. You certainly showed genetics who's boss, though. O0

My dad had very thin hair with his dad being a Norwood 7. So my folks noticed my hairless before I did. I think part of it is "bald knows bald" which was said earlier. But also others can see places you can't!

I'd been wearing my hair in an eighth-inch buzz cut for 12 years before going sly and I'd trim it every other week to maintain the length. After every trim my mom would comment that it looked like my hair was going thin in front. I always attributed it to being gray, though, and not noticeable when it was that short. In hindsight I guess maybe she was having premonitions about me going bald.
