Title: Time for a New Beginning
Post by: Frontier Guy on May 09, 2012, 05:23:25 AM
Actually, on the 21st :-)

Greetings all, glad to be among you.

I'm 57 and just beginning to see the start of MPB; on the other hand, I turned silver/gray a long time ago. I used it to my comedic advantage but it's become tiresome.

About a month ago I got a shorter than usual haircut (my request) and really appreciated the reduced amount of care required. This week I buzzed down to a #1, and 5/21 (when I begin a week's vacation) I'll go Sly!

I think the week will give me an opportunity to figure out the technique of shaving and allow time to heal any disfiguring mishaps :-) But more so to get used to the "new" look which I am really looking forward to - bolstered very much by the support and encouragement of y'all.

I'm really not concerned what others will think (I got over that a long time ago when I began wearing a septum ring) but I don't wish to be the center of conversation. I work two jobs, so there are two "work families" to reveal myself to.

Other minor details ... I'm excruciatingly optimistic, don't take myself all that seriously (I am what I am), insist on laughter many times  a day, live by mom's teaching "If you can't say anything nice ...", gay, single.  And soon ... Sly!

Nice to meet y'all (and if you couldn't guess, I'm in the South).

Welcome to the forum Frontier, don't worry, with your outlook and attitude you'll be fine. Don't sweat the actual shaving either. Be sure to buzz your remaining hair down as close as you can before you shave.

Technique will come in time, for now get yourself a good razor ( I recommend Mach III ), shave gel, and use the hottest water you can stand, and just take your time. Slow strokes and let the blade do the work, you don't need too much pressure. Enjoy the finished product, then say " I wish I had done this sooner". Many of us have done the same. Let us know how it goes.   O0

The best time is always now! But in saying that, your plan is solid, stick with it for 30 days and you'll never go back!

Welcome to the party, FG! Your new baldness will only be a topic of your colleagues' and loved ones' conversations for a very brief period. It is a big change, after all, so it's to be expected. Don't worry, as I'm sure the comments and gossip will consist of something like: "Man, he looks awesome like that! He should have done it a long time ago!" and "I love the new <insert real name here>!". In time, all will accept it as your look. 'Nuff said  8)

Best of luck! Looking forward to seeing the results.

Welcome to SBG

Post a pic and keep us posted. You'll love that smooth feeling.

As others say here, others will accept your great new look very quickly indeed.

I  started in my 50's to go thin but kept it for years - -Wish I had shaved  the dome years ago - - -

There is nothing like the GLOSSY WONDERFUL BALD DOME.

Just a brief update. (And I posted a current photo.)

As I posted originally, I buzzed down which I thought would 'ease' the transition for myself and those I deal with on a regular basis. After the first couple of encounters I quickly adopted a new approach - when someone would say "wow, that's really short" (or a big change, or whatever) I've responded with "Oh, it's only temporary - in two weeks it'll be gone entirely!" So the stage has been set - and this will keep me "honest" with my commitment.

I work in the tourist capital of the World and see many thousands of people each day - and, of course, have been studying closely men's heads - sly or otherwise. I discovered that I haven't seen a Sly fellow yet who didn't look really good, but have seen a lot who should be making the change.

Also, if I was chatting with a Sly fellow and he seemed open I asked how long he'd been shaving and if there were any regrets. I heard the same 'regret' every time - "wish I'd done it sooner" and usually followed by "I'll never go back."

So I'm primed and ready ... if I didn't have a couple of social engagements this week I'd do it tonight. But both events this week are in honor of close friends and I don't want to become the center of attention at "their" shindig.

End of my ramble. But thanks again guys for your encouragement. Anxiously looking forward to Monday the 21st.

It's true. It's incredibly liberating. May your transition be a smooth one (pun definitely intended).  O0
