Title: How long is too long?
Post by: BaldJJ on April 27, 2012, 11:04:45 PM
I'm about to give up on this Sly thing. I'm literally shaving my head for 30-45 minutes a day and STILL feeling stubble after 2-3 hours. I use a headblade, nivea for sensitive male skin shave gel, clearhead, headwash and some headlube after. I also shave in the shower. What am I doing wrong? If I could get a clean head shave in 10 minutes then I'd be fine but its taking too long and its becoming very tiring. how can I cut down my shaving time? Please HELP!

25 mins a day , i do it in 5 mins and i got a full head of head ,

Shower first

Dry body

Lather gillette gel head and face

Hot water wash basin and clean sweeps , I shave every day mind you , might be harder if your shaving alternate days.

Rinse your razor , use a gillette fusion. Or a mach 3  and a good mirror ,, feel the results , and correct , rinse hot water cold water after face , and oil or creme stuff  for a perfect shine

After shave to face

I think the root of the problem is the Headblade. I've gotten better results with Mach 3, my straight razor, and even twin blade disposables from Walgreens. Just a suggestion. Get a shaving brush and mix some Shave Secret with your favorite shaving cream and apply the brush on your scalp. I suggest disposable razors with at least two, but not more than four blades. Headblade is not a bad thing, but IMO, it's just not for people who have limited time to shave.

I might have to agree with shelving the HB for now...it might not be the weapon of choice for ya... j/s.
Albiet, I'm a HB user...shave every morning using astra doubles and don't get stubble until late evening.
Give those razors the fellas have suggested a try...sometimes ya gotta experiment until ya find ya niche....my. 02 cents ;)

I agree with the bro's above. Try using a Mach III, it's still one of the best out there, imo.
It takes a little time to become accustomed to the HeadBlade, so maybe use it for every third shave until you have a better feel for how it works.

What blade cartridge are you using with it?

Sounds like I have a similar routine, but I'm timing out at about 7-8 minutes daily. Although I shave at the sink after the shower.

Still get a close shave.  Wife won't touch my head if it is not very smooth.

I have shelved the HB, as well, in favor of my Personna M5 Magnum. I was having some repeated cut problems with the HB Triples no matter how careful I tried to be. I don't know if they did something different with later Triples or what but I was cutting myself all the time.
Sad about it, too, because I used to  :@` my HB! Not so much now. In fact I bought a new model Sport a while ago which I have not even taken out of the package.

And yet I still wear their apparel. I can't explain it.

Wow. I appreciate all the great feedback. At the moment, I'm using the TripleBlade HB cartridges with the HB. I'm changing them roughly every 3-4 days, sometimes 5. I recently purchased a Fusion Proglide Manual Razor and I use that on my face. I used it on my head once after taking a shower at the sink. I was still using HeadSlick at that moment and it had been a few days since I had shaved my head so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it.

Do you find it takes longer to do it in the shower since you can't "see" what you're doing? I can do it all by feel but it seems a bit easier/faster when I can see what I'm doing. I like the lather I get from the Nivea Shave Gel better then headslick and it sounds a lot like I should just DITCH the HB all together at least for awhile and really give the manual proglide a fair shot. I'm just so tired of spending so much time shaving my head.

If I was a complete new Sly guy - I would say OK, it's just going to take time to get used to it, practice, etc. but I've been shaving my head now for over a year and it still always takes a good 20-30, sometimes longer every day and thats just too time consuming but I LOVE the way my head feels after a shave, smooth, clean.. etc..and I really don't want to lose that.

What do you guys think: Mach III or Fusion Proglide (new model, 5 blades)?

Try them both. I use the ProGlide for my face shaving duties... Good results with it.

I use the Schick Xtreme 3 - comfort plus - - -you get a package of 20  for $18.00 at Sam's Club - - -I use them 3-4 days.   And Gillette Fusion  Proglide shave cream.

I do shave every day and it takes me no more than 20 minuts for:  face, fringe, and dome. and look at the results - - -I do use cold water to rinse and it keeps the shine on the dome  .   I love having a glossy dome.

Not   Tried a proglide fusion yet , i would say the design and appearance of the hb is quirky , hardly use it

Schick Hydro 5 is my current tool of choice, M5 is backup.  I really like the Headslick--wouldn't be caught without it, but I found the HB too cumbersome, changing direction difficult--yet as an article of industrial design it's one of the best.  But then some people liked the look of Edsels too :D.

Add me to the list of people who have put their Headblades up.  The problem are the blades.  My Schick works much better.

I'm loving my HB, and started shaving in the shower with a ToiletTree fogless mirror. In fact, I have been having the best shaves since  I started in shower and they are lasting much longer. I'm using the HB blades too. I haven been shaving for almost four weeks.

Tonight I tried showering and then going back to shaving at the sink using my fusion proglide razor and I didn't feel the same smoothness as I do when I'm in the shower but I managed to do it in 14 minutes with missing little to no spots. So far so good...Just have to keep experimenting. Tomorrow, proglide in the shower. :)

LOL!!
I use one of the simpliest routines around, not bullshitting with alot of products.
I shave my head with a Gillette blue 3 straight razor and I use a gillette gel.
No other products, and my head skin is smooth for 14 hours +.
The shaving thingy takes me - 5 mins.
Pm me so we can talk more about this. I'm 100% sure I can help you out.

I shave daily. Now, how often should I change the blade/cartridge?

I change blades at about 7 shaves, but the last one or two are not as close as the first one or two.

Can't afford to use fresh blades more often than that.

Maybe some day they will come out with self sharpening blades and they will never go dull.

Wow, how do you get an entire month out of a razor? I also use Gillette Fusion and they last me a maximum of 2 weeks (I shave every other day).

BTW, I don't like to use the Gillette Fusion ProGlide. The ProGlide system seems to 'slip' over my head, I like to have a bit more control.

One blade, one month, one bad shave!  Or very little/very thin hair.

Shaving my head is just becoming a real pain in the butt basically. It's really frustrating.... but when I look at pictures of myself with hair, even short hair...the receding just looks horrible and I can't imagine going out like that. I guess I'll just have to suck it up and deal with the extra  time it takes...

It's just annoying and I feel like I'm doing it so awkwardly when I shave, especially in the shower...I miss spots constantly and seem to have to go over everything (especially the top) 2-3 times which takes even MORE time.

I've now switched from the HB to a Fusion Proglide and I do find I get a cleaner, smoother shave... but I still don't feel like I'm really doing it 100% right.

Hang in there bud....I've been shaving my head for four years and I'm still looking for ways to improve....Remember, it's gonna take some time to get what you're looking for. To bring up an old phrase "Rome wasn't built in a day!" Good Luck and keep practicing/experimenting, there's something out there that will give you what you want!

Don't worry.. your doing it right.. or at least, you have to find what works best for you and forget about the rest. Thing is we all have spots where we still feel hair and as annoying as this can be, it's perfectly normal. We all have to go over the same spot sometimes. The human head just isn't as smooth as a balloon that would allow us a perfect shave every time. As long as you know it's as good as you can get it, then learn to be happy with that. Chances are no one will know but you. I can feel fuzz on my head now and wont shave again till morning, but if you look at me now, you can't see it unless your real close up. No one will know.. trust me.

Thanks for comments about the pro glide , it might wind me upasmuch as the HB . Seriously ifyour side of the pond see,s a market for BBC sly guys products are gonna follow beyond. HB , correct me if I am wrong but if the US see a viable market for a product which would make guys permanentl bald , The R &D of some drug companys or allied medical companys will make a killing , but its a lot of moneywhilst there is worldwide recession .

Oh yes , it seems to last well , re-iterate no business or other links with gillette , i m jus a RN part time with a private income

I have my routine down to 25 mins .... I am a sink shaver and I always shower first. The 25 includes the shower and cleanup.

I also am not 100% satisfied with the smoothness yet but it's getting better everyday....

Hang in there!

So today was a bit of a rush with a dry shave at the sink with the proglide... definitely not as smooth as when I do it in the shower or at least after the shower and it took a good 20-25 minutes. It still feels a bit awkward with using the proglide, seemed a bit smoother passes with the HB but perhaps I should give the HB a chance with different blades like the atra plus?

I just want to find a good method that I can do daily that ensures I'll get a nice, clean shave...even if it takes a LITTLE bit longer, maybe 30 minutes tops for shower, shave and clean-up... I could live with that. Any more suggestions?
