I've always had long hair and a fairly thick beard. Shaved my head and not quite sure what to do with my beard...
I definitely want to keep my beard. I don't think I want a Van Dyke - I tried that a couple times over the past decade (when I had hair) and I just never liked how it looked on my face.
But I'm thinking I should trim it up and clean it up a lot.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

I think what you've got going now is pretty cool looking.
Especially if you can't use a razor (as posted in other thread), shaving the cheeks clean probably isn't an option for you.
-
Definately keep it--try not shaving below the ears--full beard, sly head--a great combo.
-
I agree with Bear... you've already got a cool thing going on.
-
I would say you should keep the beard! Or course I would think that since I have a full beard and sly noggin! But it does look good on you!
-
Have a look at this website www.beards.org
You will find lots of help about beard styles.
-
A goatee would look good on you dont get rid of it all
-
trimmed down will do it.
mho :)
-
keep the full beard-sly head look !
-
full beard + shaved head.
-
Thanks guys. :)
I'll keep the beard for now. I didn't intend to shave the sideburns off (below the ear) but the 'accidental' cut that got this all started took out part of the sideburn, and halfway up the ear looked silly. I'll try growing that back in and see how it looks.

I agree. Keep the beard.
-
Full beards are great if well maintained (no neck beard or unshaved sections), but you look like you could rock a mean fu-manchu.
-
Be growing my facial hair for a week now. Previously shaved clean after 1-3 days. Not sure about having the furry feeling across my face.
It's like my whole head's an activity centre: smooth dome to rub and whiskers to play with around my mouth.
-
Well Jules a goatee looksgoodon guys so long as its not grey , wish you well with it
-
I've been growing a goatee. Full beards don't look good on me. :(
You wear it well though.
-
Baldchav, I must disagree about the comment on a greying goatee. If a goatee is kept neat and trimmed I think they look very nice. The grey adds an air of maturity :). Or, at least I keep telling myself, but for sure I won't be getting rid of it, since I have had one for 20 years.
-
Keep the beard.
-
Point taken Aggie no offense intended , it dont suit me , that does not mean it does not suit others
-
IMHO... The grey gives a distinguished look.
-
No offense taken baldchav. I didn't think it suited me either but I didn't like the unnatural color that just for men for beards looked so I'm wearing the greying van dyke with pride!

Been sly for three months. Growing a beard for the last 10 days and just got it shaped at the barbers.
Really not sure...
-
It looks good. You've got a nice 'stache too. Stop trimming it down narrow. Let it grow in thick over your upper lip. Trust me on this one! O0

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I agree with you about the mustache. This is my very first beard ever. So learning as I go along.
-
Looking good! Man, if that's what my beard looked like after only 10 days I'd probably grow it for a year with minimal trimmings every now and then. I gave up on mine after about 3 1/2 months and went back to the tried-and-true goatee.
-
Facial hair gives your dome and face more character Jules ! Its a Keeper ! O:O
-
Thanks guys !
And surprised what a result I got after just 10 days.

You've got a great early beard--just give it time, at least three months before making any major decisions. There are also authorities who wisely advise that when you're struck by an impulse to shave it off, wait not less than 48 hours!
-
Let me play devil's advocate MrJules. The beard looks ok but it took away your youthful looks but then again, if you are going for the more matured and distinguished image, go for it.

I don't think so at all.
-
Oh err Jules I like it
-
Wise advice on the 48 hour rule. Might be dipping into it.

Your new addition to your face is looking good, Mr. Jules. Maybe you're taking after me! If you grew that in 10 days. Wow. Takes me longer than that. It does make you look distinguished. Nice beard.
-
Thank you, Mr Zed
Your beard is an inspiration !
Had a few days of itching. But that's gone now. All I have to is let it grow.
The whole head is now an activity centre. Daily shaving the dome for a smooth feel. While there's a beard to play with around face !
-
Sly Aggie and Mr. Jules.
Your beards look great. I have a bit of gray in mine too. I like it. Wish it would thicken up a little. I like to keep it groomed though.

Thanks. Enjoying wearing my beard more and more.
Think I'll be back in a week or so looking for grooming tips.

Rob: Your Hollywoodian beard looks great. I'm sure a full beard would look good too. The bald, bearded look is a good one.
Mr. Jules: You've got a nice beard started! Let that sucker go and see what happens. And good advice about waiting to shave/trim the beard. Impulse shaves are for heads only, not faces. Or Brittany Spears.

Thanks, Salwalker. Yes, going to let it grow and see what happens. At the moment, wondering how thick it will be. Feels a bit thin.
Not sure if I dare grow my beard to your length and size.
Oh yes, Brittany Spears. :D

Don't trim that face fur for at least a month, and it will be three months, minimum, until you really get an idea where it's going--time & patience, time & patience!

It is getting better and better and better - - -

It is getting better and better and better - - -How was Jersey?
Thank you. As Saintc, growing and maturing a beard cannot be rushed. Where as bald is instant satisfaction.
Jersey was great fun. A low tax playground island in the English Channel. Recommended.
And of course the beard and bald look was received on the island.
PS - just updated my profile showing. 17 days of the beard.
-
as for the thread start question i think that the look you have now suits you and a beard would look very good a well. I have had the bald head and facial hair look for years tho most people seem to like the bald and beard combo for me ill have to get a pic of it sometime.
-
I think what you have suits you. I would grow it out along the cheek area more but that is just my opinion as that is what I do. I just shave my neck and let it grow as much as it wants around my face (although I did clean it up into a nice chin strap last week, I am anxiously waiting for it all to grow back, haha)
But all in all, looking good dude. Eventually you will find the "style" that suits you, it just takes trial and error. I have gone many a week with a smooth baby face in result of me trying something new.

Think I have grown my beard as far as I want now. It's a bit of monster and I like it.
Eating and drinking is an experience...
Any tips ? And yes, there are always napkins after most meals and drink, these days !

Well for eating & drinking as I posted earlier, I carry a comb again. before eating I comb the stach to the sides, and then as necessary and wipe well with a napkin. I've also learned to accept that this is not a perfect science. So after eating a quick trip to the men's is sometimes in order to apply some water to the stach to remove some left overs and then comb it into shape again. It's a bit of a problem at first---admittedly--but I've gotten better both and prepositioning the stach before eating and cleaning up after. Some things require a little extra care, creme style soups, a hot dog with chili--those can be a challenge.
And, after you get used to the longer length that was a challenge, I've even let it get longer. You may be tempted to after a rest at your current length. I'll post up another shot of the "growth" in about a week or so and show the "system!"

Good advice there, Saintc.
I've had a tiny trim, just to tidy up. Beard was starting to look shaggy.
So now I'm ready for another a month of more growing.
