Title: Shave with for how long before shave against?
Post by: sam2021 on March 14, 2012, 08:33:55 PM
I have just started shaving my head again and was wondering.  How long should i shave with the grain before i attempt shaving against the grain?

I only did one shave with the grain, then the next few with the grain then against to make sure the hair was shorter, now I only shave against.

As long as you prep your head well, you can shave against the grain right away.  Be sure your razor is sharp or you will feel mor tugging and pulling as you go against the grain.

Shaving with the grain does almost nothing for me so it's always against unless I go a couple days without shaving.  Even on day one, I had to go against to get any result.

I was thinking of shaving with the grain for a week just to let the old dome toughen up before going against.

You shouldn't have any issues. Try applying Witch Hazel after your shave to help sooth the dome.

It depends how long it's been since you last shaved. Maybe try with the grain at first for a few days, then give against the grain a shot. You definitely want to soothe the dome after, like BaldHD said.
Use some witch hazel first, when it dries then go with BG'z moisture or some aloe gel. Good luck.  O0

shaved against and had wonderful results.  I did have to run out and buy a head blade due to the fact the razor i was using just would not do the job.  not enough to cut in a consistent manner.

Agreed.

Started shaving against the grain from day 2. No regrets.

Yep, don't rush the shave. Take your time. And fewer, longer passes of the bald over the head. Start at the front and go all the way to the hairline at the neck and slightly beyond if necessary - all in one go.

For maximum smoothness, try and stretch the skin with one hand, as you shave with the other.

Another tip: gently place the razor on the head, move it along and then apply any slight pressure as required.
