Post by: JohnMont on May 04, 2007, 12:26:33 PM
Hey guys.  I'm a borderline guy; wanting to shave but reluctant for god knows what reasons.  have read many of the posts here; and a lot o fyou guys have expressed the same fears; hesitations I have.  So, i'd like to post a couple of pics and see if you guys think I should go for it ...  Frank honest evaluations appreciated.

Welcome to SBG John!

From the looks of your pictures, you're pretty close anyways... You could always put a 30-day plan into effect:  Shave it off for 30 days and then re-evaluate at the end of it.  If you're comfortable with a shaved head, then keep it sly... also, ask for honest opinions from friends and family.

I agree with the others, you're already close. Go ahead and shave it, give it 30 days and see what you think.

Welcome to the site too!

Bro, to tell you the truth, from what I am seeing you might look younger if you just shave it off already.  I mean, the remaining thin white hair adds years ya know.  Adopt the Shave, I think it could cut some years off your persona.

GO FOR IT!  I GOT'YA BACK!

Truthfully I thought the bottom picture was the "after" at first! You would look great and it is true...

having a clean shaved head IS the fountain of youth, my friend...

Next week I turn 40! O0

I turned 53 a few months ago.  curious as to what you think my age was.  I admit, the thought of "shaving" years off my appearance is a turn on !

Welcome JohnMont,
Am relatively new to the sly look , just going on 3 weeks now. I went through the same fears and hesitations that you are probably going through now.  The reactions to my bald head  have been overwhelmingly positive from family, , friends, and co workers; and the most common one is that I look 10 years younger (51 here). It is a simple step to take years off of your appearance.
I say go for it, especially since you are so close already. The change will be subtle since you are so close, but from what I have seen so far with others is that it is better.  Completely sly looks much better than trying to hold on with just a few hairs left.  If it doesn't work for you, you can always grow it back.
Good luck with your decision, and you have come to the right place for advice and support.

Mike

I would have pegged you around 46-47...this is the truth...you will look like you are in your early 40's for sure and thruthfully speaking, i would shave off the moustache or do a goat....the stache is quick way to 'date' a guy's age..

not many in the younger crowd these days! ;)

Mikesj, I would have said early 40s...

John, welcome to the site, go for it, what do you have to lose? There are a lot of positives that will come out of it, not to mention looking younger and feeling/looking confident.

Give it a try. You won't regret it  O0

JP, no worries Bro, half the time a good percentage of us are speaking the Language of "Beer Goggles" if you know what I am saying!  By the way, Welcome Player.

My Famdamly is getting use to it as well.  For every bro that thinks twice about doing it just due to his families reaction [With the exception being the spouse]... DO IT!!! Believe me, the new look will grow on 'em.

John, obviously I agree with the others... just do it.  It would be so easy and quick for you since it's almost all gone.  You will be surprised how just taking that little bit off will take years off of your appearance.

thanks for all the great encouragement, guys.  Still hesitating; and to let you know more details; a major 'obstacle' is my wife.  She is just not into the bald thing.  When I came home with my shortest buzz cut (I guess a #1); she exclaimed (none too happily) "you're bald!" --and the haircut was 5 days old.  now when i get it buzzed short ... about every 2 wks; she's just quiet.  We don't really talk about it; and i've never said "what would you think if I just shaved it smooth."  don't know how she'd react.  Any advice?
John

John, My words of advice are with Pigpen and the others.  Just go for it.  My wife, like yours, was not excited either.  But I can see she is warming up to the idea.

Just put the razor in your and and do. You won't regret it. O0 O0

Hey Johnmont, and welcome to SBG. I believe everyone here knows the hesitation and what if factor very well. I sported just a stash most of my life, but took the advise from the guys here to grow a goatee and then shave. Also to top it off with the "just for men" color and wow, I took a few years off my apperance. It was like a adrenaline rush that just stuck there. Here's hopin you will experience it as well  $#*t

Thanks for the support, Champ, and let me just say (with the others) that YOUR transformation into Sly is a real inspiration --Never saw such a change. (and that episode in the Disco ... too hot for words;) ... so; are you saying you use a little 'just for men' color on your goatee?  interesting possibility for me ; since my moustache is about 50/50 salt/pepper, but rest of beard is pretty white.  Then again, maybe I should just keep it natural, like the very distinguished looking Dr. Mellon.

I'd recommend the Just for Men too, John.  A little goes a long way and if you choose a lighter color the change will be less noticable.  I too have a lot of white in the goat and the JFM helps to knock years off.

>:D Disco >:D yea I'm stayin alive  :)
srry, went off track in my mind for a moment. I had just a few grays in my stash that really wasn't too noticable, but when my goat started to come in, I looked in the mirror and thought, ZZ-Top or Father Time... I'd never pull ZZ-top off!!  *!d So I grabbed some JFM stash, beard & sideburns Med Brown cause my hair was there before it wasn't anymore  :D and I was a 5 min brown again. I did lightly do the stash just in case it did not blend good, but all went well. Of course I have found out that Ivory soap will wash it away in about 5 to 7 days... so if you just want to give it a shot you can go back to all natural in about a week.
I do keep my goatee and mustache trimmed close, don't like whiskers over my lips <---- I could not find a better description that would not open up a whole different topic  #oC^^t

Since im newly sly, here is my advice = SHAVE IT!!

it really does give you so much more confidence...you feel like a new person every morning after you shave...

Good Luck! O0

John, all that I can say is the following: Leave it natural man!  Don't get me wrong, the just for men works for some brothers, but believe me, I use to have grey hair all up on my dome, I never thought about dying it just because it works if you are confident with it.  Its distinguished, denotes wisdom.  I've got red hair in parts of my black beard, I do not doubt that it is only a matter of time before I end up grey their as well, but when I'm rocking the Goat in those future days, I will probably rock it the O-Natural way... Bold, Natural, Sly... Thats the way I like to play it.  O0

I agree with you, Mr. Clean; about keeping facial hair the natural color.  Is 'sly' is about being yourself, embraceing the look God gave you, then dyeing anything seems beside the point.  Better to have a goatee/moustache accent in the natural grey or whatever ... or even go totally sly and take off all the facial decoration ..... clean and natural ... yeah .....  :)
