Title: Beard Trimmers
Post by: ycartt on February 21, 2012, 10:36:43 AM
Anyone have any recommendations on a beard trimmer?  Looking for a new one to keep my stache and goatee trimmed.  Any idea on the
Philips Norelco T980/60 Accuvac Beard & Mustache Trimmer model with the built in vacuum?

Thanks

BTW: I saw people trimming using the clippers. is that a good idea?

Wahl, with the guides, but trimming now "with the grain" or growth pattern of my beard--it results in a depth of beard from the skin out.

I just use standard hair clippers (Wahl).

I do have some beard trimmers (battery operated).  They are dull.  The teeth are smaller than standard hair clippers. They just don't work as well.  The standard hair clippers have the power and the sharpness to trim the beard and mustache.

I have 30+ years of experience trimming my beard with standard hair clippers.  They are the best option.

Saintc....you are saying to trim beard with clippers going with grain instead of against?

Yup, so far I've been doing it for about 2 months and it results in a pretty trim look, but also has the benefit of working with rather than against the density.  Every two or three days keeps any stray hairs in line.  Our office has a "neatly trimmed facial hair" policy.

I'm not a very skilled beard trimmer, but in my experience, going with the grain allows you much more control.  Against the grain can result in inadvertently taking off too much length. With the grain might not take off as much as you want at first, but you can always adjust the trimmer to a shorter length and go over it again.

I use this: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&ix=teb&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1420&bih=916&q=perfect+stubble&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=14664355455709978987&sa=X&ei=jWitT9qXEYHq9ATCpr2eDQ&ved=0CHcQ8wIwAQ

It has a bunch of length settings built in that you activate by the slide of a wheel. Real smooth/clean cut and easy to tame. The only thing I dislike is how the guard does not go over the blade entirely. It takes some getting used to before achieving a totally even shave.

I use an older version of this!

I used to use it to keep my hair at a no guard also.... I have had it for well over a year now with basically daily use, it's still going strong!

Bumping this topic...I haven't shaved during my winter break and I am liking the few days of growth look. My current trimmer doesn't cut it close enough. Any recommendation?

I thought I was the only one. Another reason I don't like using typical beard trimmers is the longest guard I found. The clippers I have to past 4.

For the last 30 years I've only ever used a small pair of scissors -- very sharp first aid scissors. A pair lasts about 20 years.

Interesting to see an old thread like this resurrected!  Have to weigh in!

I have been through several trimmers, for both hair and beard trimming. I think I have found the best consumer model available:

WAHL 17-Piece Lithium Ion All-In-One Trimmer
http://mobile.walmart.com/m/phoenix;jsessionid=97323D838A10843FDC365CB4E8EBAF98#ip/WAHL-17-Piece-Lithium-Ion-All-In-One-Trimmer-Model-9854-600/10818815

It stays charged forever and is precise enough to do some great detail trimming (which I do on my goatee area and my neckline.  Hope it helps!

Depends on how thick your beard is !  Do you want stubble and how much ?  Do you want to cut off split ends ?  Scissor's !  Do it your self and be happy take your time , shower , shampoo , and condition then trim.  Had one for years.   Good Luck !   If you want stubble , then Wahl, or Oyster Professional with guards !  ;)  Will set you back , but money invested.

I'm looking for an easy trimmer that leaves me look like I haven't shaved for about 2 weeks. I've bought a couple for the "stubble look" but they shaved way too close. Im uk based.

Just recently got the Remington Contour MB4030. I really like it . The cut is good and it has various Length-Settings:1.5-18 mm (9 steps), 0.5-5.5 mm. The Length-Settings should be fine for some longer stubble as well. It's also available in the UK.

I actually have an 18mm one. Does it way too short for me. Kinda want to have a beard basically where I can just shave it like normal but it keeps it long. Ive googled around but I keep seeing stubble look info. I kinda just want to tidy it up. Thanks for the advice.

Was also interested in the Philips Shaver. I like the fact it's Waterproofed and  a least it goes up to 32mm.
And that's the thing about the Beardtrimmer, most of them won't go high up in Length. I had some Hairclippers that went up to 40, which i used for the beard. But the comb of these things are to wide. Had always issues to trim the mustache using that thing.

It's a lot harder and takes a lot more work to stuff things up with scissors. I suggest scissors or follow Beardman's example and leave it grow as long as it wants to. If you look at my avatar today you can see that I don't worry about it too much - you can just let it get a bit ragged. Really, no one cares what my face or skull looks like including me -- what a great feeling.

And probably no one cares what you look like either so why should you bother yourself caring about how you look?
