I have used it and it works well.

Funny thing was my mom told me about it a couple of years ago as I guess Oprah had it on her show. At the time I never heard of it. lol

You know you use Skype too much when your (then) two-year-old is presented with a toy (old-fashioned style) telephone and he picks up the receiver and says, "Hello, grandma. Let's Skype!" then slams it down. (Yes, in my universe we must call to arrange Skype sessions...)

(Or you know you screen too many of your calls when the toy phone rings and the kid waves his hands and says, "Don't answer that!")

It's a great way for distant grandparents and grandchildren to "see" each other a bit more often, for one.

The user interface is pretty bad though. I still scratch my head from time to time when using it. My in-laws somehow manage to mute themselves all the time.

I use it on my mobile all the time for international calls. We havent got a land line at the moment so its the only way to keep the bills at a reasonable level. Its not always the best quakity, but usually good enough

I use it a lot when I'm out on the road, especially when I travel international and overseas. When traveling I always look forward to that 7 to 8pm video call home to my kids. First question I get from them is 'Dad, where are you today?, second is 'When will you be back?´. It breaks your heart but at the same time, having to do all the traveling anyway, it's great to be able to see and talk to them....and it's for free....my wife sometimes let's the thing running and I can watch the kids play for a while.

Use it also for some biz calls

I do use it - particularly for calls outside the country.  My oldest son only uses Skype as it is cheaper than alternatives.  Uses it with  wireless phone connected to computer.

Another thing with skype ... it can be like having a second phone line in the house.  I can call and talk without tying up the regular house phone.  Call quality is usually good.  I think it is like $36 per year to make unlimited calls (within terms of service).  So, if you are a business and plan to be on the phone 8 hours a day 5 days a week, this is considered unreasonable.  But if you make typical residential calls to family and friends and talk for a few hours at a time several times a week, that's considered reasonable.  They have full terms on the site.

Too bad I don't have contacts all over the country/world. I would really get a kick out of this.

Desktop (with cam) in one room. Take laptop (with cam) to other room. Let the kids Skype to each other. Hilarity ensues. Being all over the world isn't a requirement. (That does require two different Skype user names.)

Been using Skype for years. Thoroughly recommend it. Ok, sometimes the video and sound quality can be a bit dodgy. But it's free and fun to use.

And for anyone with an iPhone, I would also recommending installing the Skype app, too. Not so good, when you are in a 3G only area, but excellent when you are connected via WiFi.
