So the boss comes into the office today, looks at me and says "When are you going to grow your hair back?"
I Said "I dont know" and she said "Can we vote on it?" I responded with an emphatic "NO"
Need to metion that my boss is not one of my favorite people at the moment even before this comment.
RUDE!

Your boss is tactless, I hope you keep it shaved to spite her....hehe
-
Your boss may have been joking in a tactless way.
If she wasn't joking, unless your workplace has specific rules about hair (which I doubt), your boss is creating what's known as a hostile work environment. Think of it this way: it would be unconscionable for a boss (male or female) to approach a woman and ask when she was going to change her hairstyle / color, then suggest even jokingly that it be put up for a vote. Your choice to be bald is just that - your choice. She may not like it, but she's on thin ice saying what she said.
-
Ask her if she has a problem with your choice of hairstyle........But I doubt you'll get an honest answer.
-
I agree with npsbg -- it's none of her business and inappropriate to comment.
Ask her if she has a problem with your choice of hairstyle...
Actually, that's not a good suggestion. By opening the conversation, it's inviting her into the topic. Best to just not go there.
Unless there's some Draconian workplace dress code policy being violated, this is nothing that she should have any interest at all in.

We are a very small office - only 5 of us.
I thought it was appropriate!
Oh and this is after she reduced my pay and cut my hours last week (as a cost saving measure)
-
Ohhhh.... double whammy. "Hey, I'm gonna pay you less and I don't like your haircut!"
-
Ouch....Dat Sux!
-
And this is the way I was dressed today - Do I look like a thug or a mess or something? I dont think so!!
-
Photo looks good from today. What kind of a necktie knot is that? The know I use is a double windsor and it's more symetrical and plump. This looks one-sided and less formal.
-
I dont know what its called its the one I learned when I was a kid. Isnt all big and bulky like a windsor knot. I dont cinch my ties up at work because I technically dont have to wear a tie I wear it for me
-
Heh... same here. I'll wear a tie now and again even though the only rule regarding clothing is "wear some".
Keeps 'em guessing. O0
And you look sharp!
-
It seems like you are at the mercy of the boss...no work rules and no union. Guess you should lay low and document these unfair situations to prepare yourself to go to the EEOC. Just a thought.
-
if your job depends on it, idk...
but if you're not in direct contact with people, it means that's only the one that doesn't have the guts to shave and he's just jealous :D
-
Eh. Some people are shocking. you look very professional - TheSlyBear is Really professional looking however. haha just my 2c
-
You look very professional in your latest pic. Shaved head looks good with a shirt and tie.

I don't know if it fits into the term "workplace abuse". I suppose yes.
"When are you going to grow your hair back?" - is extremely arrogant. Even if she does not like your sly look, there are many other, more polite ways to express her opinion.
Even if she tried to joke, this was a very bad joke. Going as personal as she did with this "Can we vote on it?" is impolite and disrespectful.
It is still not clear for me: did she reduce your salary and your work hours in correspondence with that she did not like your sly "hair"style? (On the picture you attached, I see an elegant and conventional gentleman.) Or, she has something else against you, and she uses this as an excuse?
You see, I am female, but I can say that female bosses can be horribly tyrannical and manipulative.
-
The expression "Hostile Workplace" seems appropriate. Particularly after taking a cut in your pay packet as well as a lessening of hours. What did she do as a cost saving measure? Doesn't she realize that shaving your head is a "cost saving" measure to you? Lather and a blade are far less expensive than a bi-weekly trip to the barber shop. And, I agree with the others, you look smashing. I'd hire you just to be a decorative addition to my office.
-
Jay you have a nice shiny head, could it be that your boss just doesn't like the reflection that she sees?

Excellent line, BOXMAN! :*)) :*)) :*))

I'm glad to see I wasn't just being overly sensitive about this. She said it in front of the 4 others in the office as well (one of which happens to be my boyfriend). My co-worker piped in to defuse the situation with I'm use to it now
-
Good luck my friend. You look great to me. I agree with slynito's comment.

Yeah. You are definitely not overly sensitive.
From inside, you might feel that you had been humiliated in front of your co-workers (your boyfriend included), but from the outside, it possibly was like she made a fool of herself in front of them. Now they know how arrogant she can behave. So... shame, but not YOUR shame, but hers.
Hope you are feeling better now.

I don't know if you want to do this until you've got another, and presumably better, job, but I'd be sorely tempted to ask her if she really is trying to grow a moustache--then duck. >:D
-
That really was inappropriate of her to say that.
I'd stay low and document what and when she has said things. Might be helpful down the road.....

I believe it was Mae West who once quipped, "Keep a good diary and it may keep you!"
-
This just adds to the crap - I have a few very very hostile e-mails printed as well. Little does she know she is playing with fire. Oh and the mustache comment would be a mess since she is a 63 year old lesbian - LOL
-
I agree with npspg. if you commented on her hair style you would be setting yourself up. There is too of this happening in the work place. I used to work as an elementary p.e. teacher and was the only adult male there. Had its perks, but there wasn't a male bathroom for adults. Had to share one with the girls. Wouldn't have worked that way if it was the other way around. Such is the life of modern times. Guess I just have to consider myself lucky to work around pretty ladies everyday. O0 RD

Well, it would be a great parting shot! >:D
