The beard started back for the winter in mid October. I've kept it trimmed fairly tight this year but left the moustache with the idea of trying it waxed up. Well today was the first time it seemed long eough for wax and a proper bit of curl at the ends. I'm liking it - definitely different though I think the beard needs to be at least one setting longer on the gaurd. Thoughts? Not the greatest picture, I'll try for a better one in a bit.
-
HEHE!
imo, it looks funny!
-
Shades of Rollie Fingers.
-
Looks good. I agree with a bit longer on the beard.
-
Great classic stache O0, but you're right I think letting the beard get more full to balance the look. I'm trying a new way for the guards, going with the grain of the beard, not against it--it gives a fuller neater appearance notwithstanding the fact that the beard ends up having several different lengths. I'd always gone against the grain so that it was the same length--but that doesn't give the appearance of a "finished" beard.
-
I like it!
-
gotta agree I'm liking it - just the right amount of "I don't take myself too seriously" etc for the holidays and winter. At first it seemed odd to have the 'stache a bit firmer than usual but it only took about an hour for me to get used to it.
I had the beard good and full - hadn't trimmed it in weeks - and then took it downtoo short last night. As soon as I did it, realized it was a mistake. But, unlike what's left on the top of my head, I'll let it growback out and it'll be fine in a few weeks.
wax I used this time around was the Pinaud brand that comes in a tubeand is available locally, it's ok but I'm not wild about how it holds. the facial hair is pretty wirey so I need a bit stiffer wax - ordered some Firehouse Moustache Wax today and I'm curious to see if that holds better. It comes in a cake so seems as if it willbe stiffer.
Sly Bear - go for it! bet a handlebar or traditional set up like I'm at now would look great on you.
It's just another option to mess around with.
-
It looks very good. I grew a handlebar with some guys many years ago for a centennial celebration it was fun, but I didn't win the prize.
-
Sailor, I think it looks good. Many moons ago, (we will not talk about just how many) I grew a handlebar and had it for a couple years. Had it long enough to circle completely around on itself. It was a lot of fun. I had some issues too with the Pinaud holding it enough. Hmm, wonder if I have a pic of me with it....
-
I tried to grow a handlebar once but although one side curled and held the other side drooped which looked rather stupid so I went back to my usal beard look. Just too much work.
-
I once knew a guy with a Handlebar stache'. For Xmas, he'd hang little jingle bells from each end. It was very funny. :)
-
That is seriously awesome. Jealous. How long did it take to get to that length?
-
absolutely wild!
-
the facial hair always starts back up in mid October. not quite sure when I decided to let the 'stache fill in and go for the handlebar. I probably trimmed the mo once in early November so figure I started it as of Nov 1 and was able to start a bit of curling as of late December --- so about 2 months to get to the point in the picture.
Since then I've been letting the beard bush a bit and only trimmed it too keep length somewhat even.
The mo' now gets a good curl on both ends when waxed and holds up very well - it os starting to get in the way with food and beverages if I'm not careful.
Not sure how long I'll keep it but I'm truly enjoying it - very different look in today's world. Been getting into trying various brands of wax to hold it...surprisingly loads of choices.....
I say give it a shot.
Will post more current pictures when I can get them.

How did you get it to this length without 'sucking' on it all the time. When my mustache gets close to my lips, I find I keep licking and chewing on the bits that hang over close enough to the teeth. Time to get the clippers ....
He, I like the look. Very 'old fashioned', and I can handle that. Add a bow tie ....
-
rarely need to wear a tie but when I do it isn't one that is going to hang into my lunch/coffee/paperwork...bow ties rule! I did find myself gnawing on a few strands but those aren't real necessary so trimmed them a bit.

The tie, or the dome?

Couple of new pics taken this morning, I'm way too self-conciious to get a good shot of myself.
Thoughts? Oddly when I look at the pic posted a month ago it doesn't look much longer now than it did then. I know it is wider and I'm waxing it more heavily now. Trying to get some degree of set in the curls so I can leave it unwaxed at times. Thoughts? I'll try for some better pictures...plus I need a shave.

I think it looks great the way it is!!
-
I think it's very cool!
-
looks fine

I think it looks great as is. I dont know if its the camera angle or simply more growth but the beard and the stache look far better than the previous picture. I never gave much thought to the handlebar before but yours is fantastic. It gives me an idea how I would look with one as I believe were around the same age. Im 48 if you are younger no insult intended as you cant truly tell in a picture. If you are older then yes the picture is an exact reproduction, we cool , good! Anyway nice job and with that slick bald head its an awesome look. O0

I'm 50. Started the handlebar as a midwinter diversion but am really liking it - defintely a less than common look. Need to find and post a picture of my grandfather that I have, taken when he was about 30 (circa 1900) with one.
-
I like it very much! distinctive look! O0 O0 O0
-
Very cool...it's definitely a keeper!
-
So awesome.
-
The stache looks great !!!
-
I've had handlebars and have seen many, but yours it really top of the heap. O0
-
Looks great. I like the latest pics more than the one you first posted. The longer beard works better with the stache.
-
Looks like one of the,"Smith Brothers"...excellent!
-
agree totally - got carried away with the trimmer before the first picture was posted. Leaving the beardlonger now and the mo' is untouched except for occasional stray whickers that won't cooperate. Think I'm going to try adding a couple notches to the beard trimmer each time I trim. Have had the beard for many winters buthave never let it get full, might be time to try that.
-
Looks even better with a little more beard length.
-
One thing I've noticed is that the 'stache is definitely a guy thing. Every comment has come from a guy, not a single word from any of the women I see regularly. Either they don't notice or, more likely, don't like it and are keeping quiet.
-
looks great . i recently shaved off the goatee for the first time in 10 yrs. kind of like the change. but will definitely grow it back.
-
Looks great Sailor.
Good advice saintc.
-
Realized I hadn't put up a new pic of the mo' in a bit. Here's one snapped this morning. Filling in nicely and gets alot of attention when I go out with it set up properly. And I'm still having fun with it.
I'll try for a better picture later.

If you trimmed the beard down properly and wore a black beret and glasses you could pull off Jamie Hyneman (from Myth Busters) no problem! Just sayin' you have options. :D

Looks as if the 'stache has along way to go to catch up with his, my handles are still pretty short
Looking good Doug
-
That's a great look. Do you know if the wax holds up in summer heat? If I was to go that route, it would have to stand up to our hot humid summer weather.
-
StC
there are a number of different waxes on the market and several I'm sure would survive a La summer.
I'm most partial to Bounder (online from the UK) since it remains a bit softer than most of the others - it also has a mild scent of vanilla and rum. NIce stuff. The good ones are all beeswax based so should be fine in the humid weather. And I've found that it will stay pretty well on its own (called "loose" ) once a bit of training gets done....the growth pattern of the whiskers actually shift given time and combing etc.
It's a fun switch and certainly a conversation starter...even more so than my shiny head.
-
Very impressive handlebar, Sailor. You look great with it!
I got my first order of Bounder today. It will be interesting to see it holds up.
