Title: Beard frustration... feeling self conscious. Should I shave?
Post by: Daven on December 20, 2011, 04:01:47 PM
Ok, so I said in another post that in the hot AZ summers I sport a Van Dyke. In the cold AZ winters (insert laugh here) I grow it out to a full beard.  This is my first wither sly. I did it anyway BUT am not happy. Between the gray, white and for some reason, patches, it does not look good to me.

HONEST opinions please. Should I shave down to a Van Dyke again?  Thanks. (https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1105.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh360%2FAzDaven%2FBeard2.jpg&hash=db43506f74328ed30bf5183aad124f3bf2327937)

I don't think that you're giving it enough time.

I think the full beard [will] look(s) good but like Bear said, it may need more time.  You probably already know if it's going to fill in the way you want it to or not.  I love that intense stare in the 2nd picture

I think it looks good.  I think it suits you better than the Van Dyke.

Keep the beard.  In fact, grow it out longer and gauge your lobes another 2mm  ^-^

Keep the beard but trim it.  For some reason it's coming in unevenly - trim the whole thing back to a short length and let the slower parts catch up a bit with the longer.

IMO, it looks awesome!
I'd really like to be able to grow a beard:D
I will, soon, though:d

Guys with very dark hair seem to grow in their beards more quickly than those of us with more blonde beards.  Give it some time. Too soon to judge the 'spots' that you 'complain' about.

I like the look. I think the full beard looks excellent on you.

This sounds like a good idea. The other thing I thought of was shaving the cheeks, leave the sideburns and the jawline about the same width to the goatee.

I liked the top photo, but suggest you trim a better outline...more definition.

I think the beard look is great on you (makes the face look trimmer and jawline more defined on you).
I would avoid trimming and give it more time.
Check out www.beards.org for lots of good advice.

Also the goatee on razor is looking awesome with the different tones.

I think that the beard looks great on you. As most need to give the sly look the 30 days rule why not give your beard the same. Keep it trimmed and let it even out. I envy you, I wish I could grow a beard, but sadly am completly unable too  :-[

I think your beard looks just fine.  Just let it grow another month and then decide how much and where to trim it back.   Perhaps as mrzed suggested.

On another note though, I think we should start a caption contest for that middle picture of you!  :D

Merry Christmas to all.

Full beard all the way, it highlights your face shape and looks much slicker

I'm not too crazy about the different tones, but thanks.   :)

I agree with the opinions of most brothers that the full beard looks better but keep it trimmed.

I just know it is time to trim it when the whiskers start to tickle at night...as I wear a CPAP.

Thanks guy's. I did have the van dyke before the beard so it is longer, I will take a trimmer to that and see if I can get it all even. The part I don't like is my cheeks and there is so much grey and white there, it's hard to see. It's consistent but different shades. I'll post another pic when I trim down. I was almost thinking of dying it, but naaa.

As for the 2nd pic, yeah, I did that on purpose. :)

It looks more blond than grey in the photos.

you need to give it more time. It looks patchy becuse hair does not grow evenly. Give it a frew more weeks and then do a trim to even all the hairs out.

Hey Daven, This is my first post is a long time even though I read the boards regularly!  Keep the beard, it's a nice change and takes off the 10+ pounds that the camera adds.  Give it some more time and don't get in any hurry to trim or shape it just yet.  My bet is that you'll look pretty bad-a** in just a few short weeks!

You have to give the sides more time to grow longer. It takes awhile to fill in and be seen. Most people give up way to soon.Check some of the beard sites they can be most informative.

Nothing wrong with some snow in the beard. But then I would say that, wouldn't I?  8)

My partner is the same way. He doesn't like the fact that his "snow" isn't (yet) symmetrical, and uses "Just For Men" to even it out. He'll just let it go natural (he says) once it starts evening out on its own.

I don't think I would "just for men" I will just stand around and whinge till it sorts itself out!! :Xo!
