Title: fitted caps vs. adjustable caps
Post by: Sir Harry on December 05, 2011, 07:31:49 PM
Hey, Slys (and Slyettes if there are any) I know that most of you all, like myself, have no problem showing off our bald pates..but if I am going to be out in the sun for an extended period (i.e. cutting grass, painting, playing/watching sports) I like to wear a cap. I have several fitted Starter caps that I had monogrammed while overseas, and I also have a few adjustable caps (the Blockhead caps from the early 90s for example). IMHO, the bald man who can't/won't shave his head should wear a fitted cap because nothing says tacky like a bald man whose cranium is still exposed above the strap of the adjustable cap, and as for sly guys, they could probably wear either, but I like to wear a fitted cap just to keep 'em guessing once in a while(I wear the adjustable sometimes with certain outfits/sporting team shirts)....What about you folks? Do you wear a fitted cap? adjustable? some other type hat/cap? no headgear at all regardless of the weather? (BTW I'm a reservist so I have to wear caps/kevlars/berets as part of the uniform) What say you?

When it's cold I wear a scully or one of my coo-el flat caps. When I'm out on the water I wear an old boony hat from the corps...when I want to look smart in the summer I wear a beautiful straw I bought in Panama City. But most of the time I want to show off the head that's slick enough to slide on barb wire.

I'm not too much of a hat person but I'd love to find a fitted cap that looks good.  I only have adjustable right now.

I go with Flexfit type hats.  I feel they are more comfortable than the standard fitted hat.  I can't do the adjustable.

I like a flexfit cap too, but some can be too tight. tight enough to leave a ring on my head! they look nice, but a adjustable just had a nicer fit.

This morning, I went for my 1.5 mile run and I ran into this bald guy....cool cat except for two things: One he was wearing an adjustable hat but you could see the bald spot between the hat and the adjustable strap Two. He was wearing a ponytail! Look, I have nothing against a guy with horseshoes or "donut holes" as I used to call them but bald with a ponytail is one of the worst things a guy could do-even if he is a biker-No offense to guys with ponytails, IJS there has to be a better alternative...

I agree. Ponytails are not a good idea.

I prefer to go without a hat; but if I am outside for any length of time, I will wear a hat for protection from the cold and/or sun.
When wearing a baseball cap, I much prefer the fitted because they are classier.  I do have a couple of adjustable caps I got cause I needed one on the run or because I wanted to sport a particular logo and I couldn't fine a suitable fitted one.

I have to agree, fitted hats are a lot more comfortable and look like you choose it for the style, not just as a way to cover your head

I have a collection of Starter fitted caps that stands at about 17 or 18. hope to add to that real soon. May get a couple of adjustables for the fall later on...

When I do wear a hat, mainly fitted...w/the curved brim. Have a couple of adjustables though.

I have both adjustable and fitted caps.  The only problem is that most of the fitted caps I own were bought when I still had hair and now that I'm sly they're a little too big.  So I'll probably pick up a few fitted caps that work with the bald dome.  However, I kind of like the look of an adjustable cap on a sly dome.  Seeing the smooth back and sides and then the same bald scalp in the little window of the adjustable cap looks cool to me.   ;)

I am with you on this Frank.

Nothing against adjustable caps...but my concern with them comes from a post in another thread. One of our members said he got a half-moon shaped sunburn in that same window between the cap and the strap...Of course if you use sunscreen it shouldn't matter, but given that this Southern heat isn't letting up anytime soon....any cap is better than none....to each his own, I guess.

Yes, I agree that can be an issue.  However, if you wear a fitted cap and stay in the sun for a long period of time then you can end up with a pale scalp and a tan neck.  So regardless of the cap you wear, if you do wear a cap, the use of sunscreen is key.  Personally, I prefer not to wear a cap at all in the summertime to avoid tan lines and use sunscreen and keep to short bursts of exposure to sunlight.  I tend to tan well and that works well for me.  I tend to wear caps and hats in the wintertime or early spring.   :)

I had to google to find the difference between fitted and adjustable.  I never realised that there was an option :o

If I have to cover up in the sun I prefer a bandana.  I have 2 caps.  Apparently they are adjustable.  I didn't pay for either of them.

Man I stopped wearing adjustable caps back in the 90s. They just never fit my noodle right. I wear the new era fitted as well as the stretch fit XL/XXL I have a size 8 leather fire helmet I wear on the job that is fitted. Come to think of it if I did not shave my head I probably would not be able to wear hats haha
