I suggest a chatbox (sorry if it's been suggested before)
On SMF it's available, and free (as I know)
it can be added on the main website (so visitors can see it and become interested), and on the top of forums page, so we can easily share ideas.

Sorry, but I don't think a chat program is in the best interest of the forum.  It has been requested a few times and every time I research it I'm more convinced that I don't want it.  The forum is designed as a way to have an open conversation and the information that is shared can be shared with all.

Besides, you can just privately exchange Yahoo IDs (or whatever) and then chat that way if you needed to.
