Title: Okay so I used a razor!
Post by: JDW on November 16, 2011, 01:57:53 PM
I just shaved my head using a razor and it was hell at first. I spent first 20 minutes cutting myself with it and just wasting shaving creme and every time i towel dried my head it just came out looks patchy as **** so I got a little panicked and thought I would do the rest later as I was quite stressed. When I turned the shower on I decided to give it another go and I used the constant water from the shower to keep cleaning the razor which was a lot easier than using a sink full of water and I just spread the cream on my head and found the technique I should have been using with my razor and it worked really well. Still tiny patches around and a few blood spots came about because of it but all in all I think it was a success and I will be keeping my head bald for the foreseeable future!

I took my dog for a walk afterwards because I felt like my head needed fresh air and it did me the world of good getting the air on my head after that hour of stress. I think in future I'll keep the shower on when I'm shaving my head and eventually I'll be shaving it in 10-20 minutes hopefully. I'll have to put up a picture when I get time but it was what I wanted because I really didn't find the buzz cut with a clipper was short enough.

So I do acutely have a question at the end of all this, how much shaving cream should I be putting on my head? I put a load on and I feel as if maybe I'm using too much.

Okay, thanks!

Depends what kind of shaving cream. I use Head Slick and if I put a quarter sized dollop on my hand and lather it up good that's plenty. Same can probably be said of most of the gels. Canned foam may be different. I figure I can always use more if needed but this stuff gets pricey. I'd rather go back for a little more Head Slick than rinse a whole bunch down the drain before the scraping starts.

I use very little shaving cream. If i use gel or head slick, maybe a little more than a nickel size in the palm of my hand. I don't need too much more. It just clogs the razor. When I'm done, sometimes I get another dab for touch ups and sometimes I don't need the little extra.

Yeah, don't fall for the hype in the shaving commercials.  The guy has this perfect shave creme 'beard' that looks like freshley fallen snow.  He makes a pass with the razor and there's this perfectly shaved path.  Where did that half inch thick shave creme covering go?

Like the guys say, sometimes less is more.  Don't underestimate the benefit of leaving the shave gel on for a few minutes before shaving.  Don't rush your shave.

Okay, thanks for replies. I'll use your advice and I guess everyone does it differently so I'll just have to find my way of doing it.

JDW,

Congratulations!

As the other guys have said, it takes very little Head Slick or a gel to do the job.  It helps to use a shaving brush which will enable you to work up an amazing amount of lather from a very small amount of the cream!

Enjoy the dome.
