Title: Thinking of shaving it off - but some apprehensions
Post by: melony on October 26, 2011, 08:41:03 PM
Hi !
I just joined this forum. Having read through several of the posts, I am overwhelmed by the positive attitudes here about baldness.

I am about 26, and have been thinning since I was 20. However, it was only about 2 weeks ago that I mustered the courage to get it buzzed down. However, I have been told by some people that my head looks a little weird without hair. I am wondering now whether I should take the step of shaving it all off. I am concerned about what the feedback from my colleagues will be - though I am somewhat heartened by the fact that the buzzed look went down OK at work.

After the last buzz, my hair has grown back - but you can see that there's heavy balding on the crown. Just wondering now if i should stick to regularly buzzing it, or just shave it off.. What do you guys think?

Go ahead and shave it. You have nothing to lose. If you don't like it (unlikely), it'll just grow back.

My opinion is that you should shave it clean.   Your colleagues will get used to it quickly and very likely compliment your new look.

You can try a very close buzzcut first, like just 2mm or 1/8 inch. You have great skin tone for a buzzed/shaved head. The length in you pics just makes you look older or trying to hang on to hair of any thickness for some reason. Today hair is not valued or seen as needed in most cultures.

sound like you have not given your friends 30 days to get used to your short hair.  Those who complain about it need to get used to it.

This summer I buzzed my head (no guard), about as short as you can go without actually shaving.  I really liked it.  I'm letting it go a bit longer for the winter, #1, but would really like to shave it bald for a month or two next summer... of course I might really like it and keep it bald!

I have a few buddies at work who are balding and they could use the encouragement to shave bald.  So might do it with them.

I say go for it  - your hair is at about the same point as mine when I did the deed the first time.  Personally I really enjoy the freedom that bald gives me and I think it looks good on me.  However if it doesn't work for you then your head will quickly rebound to the buzz cut status - which I will say looks good on you.  Your skin tone lessens the contrast that those of us who are pasty white deal with when we have/had dark hair.   Just go get the razor out - you know you want to.

Thanks for the support guys, I really need all I can get.. Have been pretty down about this for a while now and I'm finally beginning to get more confident about myself

Another question - After I do shave off, are there particular glass frames that'll suit me better? I've been thinking of getting a new pair, and I'd like to know what you think.. Reading around the forums, it appears that thick square frames are probably the best. Not sure though whether they will work with my skin tone.

you're welcome.
I think we'll have to see you shaved, with glasses so we can chat about it. But, naturally, to a bald guys, everything suits :)

I agree and it'll grow back if YOU don't like it.

In regards to the glasses I'd say shave it on down and go to an optometrist and and see what frames you like the best with the new look. What works with some may not with others.  8)

I would go ahead and do it if I were You. Give it a try for 30 days. If You don't like it, it will grow back. I was somewhat apprehensive at first myself but I have had no regrets. IT helped my self confidence alot also.

Welcome to the forum. You have the support of all of us.

Chiming with all the other bro's advice.  Come on!  It's only hair (or its absence).

Take it off.  Look at the effect.  Love it?  Keep it.  Hate it?  Grow (what you have) back.  Realize that there's "something" about being bald that semi-hair can't match.  Take it off for good.

Just sayin'

Go for it.  We are positive that you will like your new shaved dome.  Give it the 30 day trial.

I am also for giving the head shave a try. Based on the pictures you posted, I think bald will suit you well. As for the glasses, a shaved dome and the right glasses will give you a more dignified image.

Don't worry what others will or might say and think.  I would say people get easily used to a shaved head because it looks great, almost on everybody. Looking at your pictures, I bet you will do it anyway in a few years time.....but why play a waiting game...do it now, and as others say....if you don't like it, it's only hair, it will grow back faster than you think
