Title: Pulled the trigger on the first step
Post by: Eric The Red on October 17, 2011, 01:13:33 PM
Hello fellas,

After nearly 25 years of hair peices, I went to the barber while ago and took the first step of having my head buzzed. I found this site yesterday, which candidly was inspiration to do what I had thought about doing for a long time. Wife wanted me to do it before our beach vacation back in early June, should have listened--because I am a cue ball with a face tan...

Wife doesn't know, will see what she says when she gets home from work.

No regrets. Actually a little liberating. May have to find a tanning salon, I have a cousin's wedding reception to go to this Sunday night.

You'll feel good Sunday night, that I can say :)
I'm glad you took it straight.
And yes, I have the tanning problem too, but it'll be fixed as soon as my face skin color will go to normal, and then in the spring it'll be all alike:)
Congratz for your choice :)

Welcome to the group. We have a lot of ex-piece wearers or whatever they are called on this site and I'm sure they will chime in. Just let nature take care of evening out the skin tone. Screw the salons and the sprays.

hey - welcome

avoid the tanning salon.  go to walmart/target/walgreens/riteaid etc and get a tube of Jergen's Natural Glow Express.  yes it's a self tanner but it does not turn you orange if you follow the instructions.  it will do a good job of getting the blinding whiteness toned down.  they make 2 versions of Natural Glow, express is the high octane one.  don't see why you could not use it right over the stubble of the buzz.

enjoy living without the wall to wall on your head !

Congrats on the new freedom.  Now, shall we start a pool to see if you get a head rub or two and the reception???? ;D

I'm gonna chime in with the guys who advise avoidance of tanning salons. Even a basal cell carcinoma is a major problem when you have to have a chunk the size of a quarter chopped out of your forehead like I did.
The tan is cosmetic. It has no real importance. And a tan pales when you are about to go under the knife.

Good advice on the tanning and thanks for the welcome.

I'm kinda digging the bald look. Feel sort of hip  :XX  Should have done this a long time ago. Gotta admit, I've been putting this off for years and might have kept doing so had I not found this website.

Kudos to you sly bald guys.

Congratulations, welcome, and enjoy.

The best way to get some quick color is the Jergens or L'Oreal as you won't end up orange.  It'll get less white everday though on it's own.

Wife grinned ear to ear the minute she saw me. Not totally sure what that meant....but she later gave me one of her leg razors and I lathered up with the gel and cleaned my skull.

I bet you thought "why didn't I do this years ago  -  like 25 years".

Enjoy the new freedom and pleased your wife likes it.  My wife took a few days to adjust years ago but now wouldn't have it any other way.

May I ask where you had your hairpiece from?   I am right where you were and am working up my self to do the deed next week and use TG break to get some breakin time.

One big worry I have is how to get out of HCM without a large expense.  Were you able to get out of a membership too?

I wasn't an HCB member and don't know how that scenario works. I used an independant guy in Dallas, he'd cut off a snip of my hair and send it off to be matched up. Took about a month for it to come back. Cost me a thousand bucks 25 years ago. Then a new one every few years. I was an old hold out, with the double stick tape. Some years ago he went to the more permanent method, where it stayed on the head and you went in every few weeks. But I never did that, thought it was expensive and already a pain in the ass as it was.

To tell you the truth, in my opinion, in the early years I fooled people that didn't know me. It was human hair and matched up perfectly to my own. I never would have done it in the first place if I would have had a more "normal" balding pattern. I had a big thick patch of hair at my forehead hairline. I used to use it as sort of a marker spot on how to place my peice.

I'd been thinking about shaving for years, but was too chicken. Found this site, got inspired, and did it.

My only regret is that I didn't shave when we went to the beach this summer, so my head would tan up.

I'm growing a beard, giving thought to a face hair scenario. Eventually I'll post a picture.

I never wore a hair piece, just lots of ball caps!  I did this for years and hated going anywhere that would require me to remove my cap.  July 3rd of this year was my Independance Day!  While on vacation, and without telling anyone, not my best friend or even my wife, I grabbed a fresh razor (I was already buzzing my hair at about at triple O, I jumped in the shower and done the deed!  It was one of the best things I ever did for myself and I still love it.  I didn't tell anyone before-hand because I didn't want to hear any negative comments.

Do not risk tanning beds!  I wouldxalso encourage you to stay away from any of the instant/sunless tanning products until you have more time to experiment before your big event.  Regardless of the excellent results some people have with certain products, other people will not have good results - they may turn orange or be splotchy.  If you must, go get a spray tan at a reputable salon.  Those tans will last from 1-2 weeks.

Congratulations on becoming a member of the best brotherhood in all of the www.!
