Title: Its official. I love Razor X
Post by: Chavster on October 06, 2011, 06:00:57 AM
:o

Yesterday, he was kind enough to give me the link to the website of a company I didnt even know existed. They sell American and Canadian food, they're based around 30 miles from my house, and OMG, I looked at the site and went :o :o

I placed an order with them yesterday morning, and it just arrived a few minutes ago. I didnt order as much as I wanted to, because I'd never used them before and I didnt know how reliable they are. Now what you have to understand is that for me, this is going to be a little slice of heaven, because I can only get to America once or maybe twice a year, and even the crappiest of American food (including Velveeta) is better than most of the garbage I can buy here. So dont tell me off for my little indulgences, because its put a big smile on my face on a day when I'm not feeling too fantastic.

(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi484.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr205%2Ftropsnew%2FDSC09459.jpg&hash=fa99103fdc0fb21a17ceb5e8ebb9026fdc6353f3)

And the price tag for this little bundle of joy was £43.14 including delivery, and at today's exchange rate, thats $66.00

X Man: you are the bees knees, old chap :D

I am SO going to have Macaroni & Cheese for my dinner tonight

We have the same sort of places over here so we can get British foods such as clotted cream and the like.  I love making sticky toffee pudding and have Lyons Black Treacle in my cupboard right now.

Keep the black pudding though !

I would rather let someone do their business in my mouth than eat black pudding.

E--W--W

I've never heard of Lyons Black Treacle though. I've heard of Lyons, but not black treacle. I like sticky toffee pudding :) as long as it doesnt have dates in it. I dont like dates.

Clotted cream: yummy. For breakfast this morning, I had clotted cream rice pudding with nutmeg :D

You gotta learn the lingo. If it comes from the blue box, it isn't "Macaroni & Cheese"; it's "Kraft Dinner."

Practice: I am SO going to have Kraft Dinner tonight.

Aside: my local grocery sells, among other things, Iron Bru in the "British Foods" section. Looks like the same few cans have been there for ages.

Oh. But its in a blue box and it says 'Macaroni & Cheese' on the box.

Doesn't matter. If you absolutely must, take two fingers and place them over "Macaroni &" and "Cheese." Look immediately above to see "Kraft." Look immediately below to see "Dinner."

They changed the packaging years ago. (In the US, at least. You can still buy it as "Kraft Dinner" in Canada, supposedly.)

(Me, I never touch the stuff, but it is the food of my people.)

It cant be that long ago, because on the side of the box, it says:

BEST WHEN USED BY 02 OCT 2015

But it doesnt matter anyway because its unlikely to stay in the box much longer than 08 OCT 2011

:D

Oh you really really REALLY helped. Ok I know its not exactly gourmet fare, and its not squashed duck or lobster in caramel and zatapote sauce, but its made me very happy :)

My ex-wife used to tell people I had a Mac & Cheese (or Kraft Dinner, which I'd never heard of before either) fetish.

But any US food in a box or a can is sh*t...take a little time and shop for fresh foods and prepare them yourself....and I can tell you some stories of hot women I meet at the grocery stores.

This is a true story: I graduated from college with a woman who earned a 4.0 in chemical engineering.  She went to work for Kraft Foods and has spent most of her career working on making Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and Velveeta taste creamier and cheesier.  Interesting career for a chemical engineer - makes me wonder what's in that blue box!

Wouldn't touch "Kraft Dinner"--just read the ingredients!  I prefer my mac n cheese baked, not in a loose sauce and it has to be home made with a combo of cheeses including cheddar, extra sharp, real Swiss--not Wisconsin rubber.  Anyone who would put that KD stuff in their body isn't a "fussy eater" just totally inexperienced with properly prepared food--sorry, that's the truth.

I agree.  My mom makes great homemade mac and cheese.  She makes it around the holidays and maybe once in the summer.  That's about the only time I eat mac and cheese.  When I was a kid, and before somebody gave her the recipe, she used to make the Kraft stuff.  I always hated it and can remember sitting at the table for hours because she wouldn't let me leave until I finished it.

Very prudent, considering the caloric load and the fat content it's a dish that should be sparingly served.  The packaged stuff is probably carrying the same caloric and fat problems--but without the taste of this hallmark of comfort food.  A summer barbeque of baby back ribs or grilled chicken, some mac n cheese, and liquid refreshment, that's something to work up the need for some hammock time with.

Here is my standby recipe for Mac and Cheese.  Great comfort food !

Deen Brothers Macaroni and Cheese

Ingredients

4 cups sharp cheddar cheese grated
2 cups monterey jack cheese grated
1 small jar pimentos, chopped
2 tbsp onion grated
1 8oz package cream cheese
1 cup mayonaise
1 lb elbow macaroni

Directions

Put macaroni on to boil.  While macaroni is boiling, mix cream cheese, mayonnaise, 2 cups cheddar, 2 cups monterey jack, pimento and onion together to make pimento cheese mixture.  Add macaroni to cheese mixture and mix. Pour into 13x9 baking dish; add reserved 2 cups cheddar cheese to top. Bake at 350 for 20-25min.

The Lovely Mrs. Schro makes an insane homemade mac & cheese (uses quite a bit of fresh ground pepper). Funny thing is, her degree is in food science....so, the point previously raised about the "science" of boxed mac & cheese hit home in the House of Schro.

Jeez, some of you REALLY need to get down from that soapboax you're on before you break something :o

One of the things I live on is pasta, and one of the dishes I make constantly is mac & cheese. Because there's no such cheese as 'swiss' :o, I make mine with a mixture of Gruyere and Emmenthal, and once in a while if I feel like a little extra tang, I'll also use Glastonbury Cheddar or Gorzonzola. I make my own roux base, and there's nothing 'packet' or 'pre-made' or 'reconstituted' about it.

So whats the big deal if I like to eat some of the Kraft sh1t once in a while? I hate to tell y'all this, but just like the UK, America isnt exactly known for being one of the worlds gastronomic powerhouses :o Im far from "inexperienced with properly prepared food", in fact the opposite is true, and I'd like to bet I know as much about food (and preparing it) as the rest of you. Admittedly I'm not familiar with the practice of squeezing a duck until its guts explode, but that doesnt mean I dont know about the concept of real food. I've been on the planet for 47 years, and I can assure you that in that time, I havent just eaten m&c out of a box or Chef Boyardee ravioli...

Yesterday, when I started this thread, I alluded to the fact I was having a bad day and that I wasnt feeling terrific, and I asked you not to beat me up because I bought a few things that I like. Today, I'm still feeling sh1tty, and I didnt expect to come here at 5.30am to basically find I've been called a moron overnight, just because I bought a couple of boxes of M&C. Big hairy deal.

I dont like Kraft m&c because of the taste, or because its quick to make, or because its cheap. I like it because it reminds me of my childhood in CA and NV, when my mother used to make it for me. Back in the 60s, nobody knew as much about food as we know today, so yes, she used to sometimes give me a plate/bowl of K m&c and I used to wash it down with a glass of Kool Aid that (in those days) needed to be made with about 500 tons of sugar.

Do none of you have a comfort food that takes you back to another era? Do you not have ANY guilty pleasures at all? Do you not eat or do something once in a while that cheers you up even though you know what you're eating or doing isnt the best thing in the world for you?

Jeez...

As for clotted cream, yes the name is slightly off-putting, but clotted is another word for churned, and all butter and cream is churned, no matter where in the world you live. in Cornwall and Devon, where clotted cream is generally made, their word for 'churned' is 'clotted', just like we call a sidewalk a pavement, and what you call a pavement, we call a roadway.

Clotted cream with strawberry jam on a scone is delicious.  Clotted cream is very similar to what we call "whipped butter".   One of the pleasures of life is trying different foods even if the name sounds bad.

Eww!!! No!!! Clotted cream is nothing like whipped butter!!! :o

Forget the taste, but clotted cream is more like what you call sour cream, from a consistency point of view. Our product (called soured cream) is much thinner than the stuff you have there, but IMO, clotted cream is much more like your sour cream than whipped butter :o

I dont like strawberries either :( I do eat scones quite often, along with clotted cream, but I have cherry jam rather than strawberry. I dont like anything with pips (pits, stones).

And by the way, while we're on the subject of cream teas (which is what scones/jam is along with a cup of tea), I should point out to all you Yankee types :) that a 'cream tea' doesnt mean you put cream in your tea. A cream tea is the name of the meal/snack. Cream should never go in tea. Milk goes in tea :)

This is a long standing joke and point of annoyance within the UK hotel industry, because so many Americans ask for cream in their tea, thinking they're being locally knowledgable  :-X

A little testy today are we? :/O  No need to snap back--you just happened to mention an iconic comfort food and there will be opinions, and strong ones, based on taste but most importantly memories.  Learn to live with it.   :x!  Ementhaler is known as "Swiss" to most Yanks--the cheese with holes.  As for "gastronomic powerhouses" I see enough foreign types here going absolutely head over heels about our food to dispute that.  The quality of food is often the result of local foods cooked from fresh ingredients according to local traditions and tastes.  Provided you're willing to get out of your "comfort zone" a lot of good food exists all over this country from serious "haute cuisine" to really fun food like fried Twinkies.

Not testy at all, but just because I eat what I eat doesnt mean I'm not familiar or smart enough to know any better. I didnt like the "inexperienced with properly prepared food" comment. Thats what really got my goat. It doesnt mean Im still annoyed, or that I dont like you or value your posts, because you know I do, but that comment did upset me.

Well there are people who insist the tea has to be poured first, and others (usually lower class types, but not always) who put the milk in the cup first. Although the lower class types generally use a mug. Or if they use a cup, they pour the tea into the saucer, so that it cools down faster.

The milk MUST go first. Thats just the way it is, end of story, finished :)

I only drink tea when I have a sore throat.

That's the way it was explained to me in no uncertain terms.

Sorry, I made a boo boo :o The tea goes first, then the milk (as per my previous post)

Tom if you're mixing with the type that puts the milk in first, then I'm sorry, I can have no more to do with you. I'm just not that kind of boy! :D

Cream should never go in tea. Milk goes in tea :)

This is a long standing joke and point of annoyance within the UK hotel industry, because so many Americans ask for cream in their tea, thinking they're being locally knowledgable  :-X
Using cream--usually half and half in actuality-- in tea or coffee is common in other areas of the US, but not here--milk.  When you hear someone asking for "cream" it is a tourista!  Also, the tourists drink hot coffee with the meal :o--coffee or a demitasse is post dinner.  And the final carp on coffe in the US generally is that it is thin, watery coffee in other places--coffee should be, as the old French expression says, "Black as the Devil, Hot as Hell, and Sweet as Love!"  For cafe au lait--breakfast coffee, a pitcher of hot steamed milk and a pitcher of hot black chicory coffee are poured simultaneously into the cup.  Cafe Brulot is a dessert drink made with hot coffee spices, liquors and then flamed and put into brulot cups.
Tea--a cold iced  drink served year round with a wedge of lemon.  No milk or cream  please.   Or hot, it sits at ladies' teas and luncheons while the ladies slam the wine, the tea is there for window dressing.

Ahem,ahem.

Ask the tea drinker if she prefers milk, sugar or lemon and add it to the drink prior to pouring the tea. Pouring the tea over the additions allows it to fully mix. You should serve lemon slices, rather than wedges, as they can "sit" in the tea cup. Always put the milk in first, followed by the sugar and ending with a lemon slice.

Nope, milk first.   If you pour the tea first, the milk gets scalded.   :/O
