Title: Facebook
Post by: tomgallagher on October 05, 2011, 12:49:51 PM
Is anybody else, besides me, getting tired of Facebook.?

I have an account but I'm definetly not a fan.

I don't care who just made cookies, what kind of coffee you drink, if you love your kids, or if you just farted.
These people that think the rest of the world wants to know what they are doing 24/7 need some help.

I also tink FB has hurt SBG in some ways. A lot of the old timers post there but rarely here.  :'(

well, I only use FB to connect with people (mostly from US).
It's good to share photos around and comment (it  gets us toghter:D).
and no, I am not a fan of facebook, I just use it from time to time

Like everything else, moderation is the key.  I've connected with some old friends and new connections because of Facebook, but some people do overpost.

I refuse to use Facebook. I dont see the point in it at all.

I kept getting 'you've been poked' emails, and 'someone you havent seen since 1983 wants to give you a lump of cow sh*t to go in your Farmville farm' emails, and 'scary psycho woman Juliet who had epilepsy and who you mercilessly nailed in a broom closet in 1993 wants to tell you that you should support the South West Nigeria Battle for Cleaner Drinking Water Brigade' emails.

I dont have time for all that crap.

I'd love to know what Twitter is all about though. That seems kind of interesting. But FB sucks a big one.

I think that it can be a good tool, when used properly, to connect with true friends that may no longer be close (geographically). Like Red said, moderation is key.

Post by: Chavster on October 05, 2011, 03:11:43 PM
I agree with the moderation thing, however it seemed to me that no matter how little I used facebook, it was other people that needed a lesson in moderation. I know you can fix the settings to only receive certain types of updates and stuff like that, but jeez louise, the amount of crap some people post on FB, even if I cut my email notifications down to almost zero, I was still bombarded. I deleted my account. Anyone who is a real friend knows where I am, and the rest of them can kiss it.

Yup, I know what you mean...I have a friend and her FB is like a GPS. I can go to FB and see where she is anytime of the day. And she has photos and info that someone will grab on to someday. That ain't for this ol' boy.

Exactly. I feel the same. I do agree with moderation, but it would only work for me if I could moderate everyone else on Facebook :(

Im not sure we have the same features here. I know some of the FB settings have been banned by the EU for some reason, and we dont have all the same settings you have, and we have some that you dont have.

The only one I ever really wanted was 'click here to electrocute the person who is getting on your tits', but I was never able to find a link for it.

That would be a nice feature!

:D

Wouldnt it be fun though? Or we could have a little 'electrocute' button on our keyboards, and any time someone drives us nuts with their Farmville bull5hit, or their 'you've just been poked' bull5hit, we could push the button and send 25,000 volts directly to their keyboard. That'd teach 'em. I'd pay extra for that.

I haven't signed up for it yet just for those reasons. I don't need people knowing everything I do 24x7.

If used in moderation I can see it being a fun application though. I may give in someday but not today. lol

Well the final straw for me was when I received an email to tell me that one of my 'friends' (a guy I went to school with in 1984) had just run out of toilet paper, and that he needed someone to take some over to him urgently.

This was something I really didnt need to know. I had visions of him sitting there on the can, his knickers around his ankles, laptop on his knees, begging for someone to break into his house with a roll of Charmin Ultra Soft so he could de-dingleberry himself

I don't use Facebook at all.  I can see its value in some ways, but like others have said, some people are way over the top.

My daughters are big users although both have slowed down lately.  I've had to talk to them about posting too much information - things like where they're going and with whom and too many personal details.  There are just too many nuts around these days for that to be safe.

A couple years ago I had a friend tell me I had to sign on FB to see some pictures.  So I signed up for an account, saw the pictures, and thought this is BS.  Over the years I have almost never logged on and she is still my only FB friend.

Good thing I signed up with a completely fake account ;D  I keep thinking I'm gonna do it for real and can't bring myself to do it.

Does anyone know how to delete a FB account? I'm giving that serious consideration but they have changed the controls, it seems. There used to be a button for deleting the account but I can't find it any more.

Once you create an account they want to keep you around as long as possible.  Here's a link to request permanent deletion:

I've found FB handy for keeping in touch with my daughter in South Africa, my other children & grandchildren & friends too. I've reconnected with old classmates & friends I lost track of. People only know what you want them to & if you don't appreciate what someone posts just block them. You're in control of  FB Page.

I am a facebook addict. I have way too many friends on it, I think out of the thousand plus 'friends' I have there I have actually met 400 of them. Im from a small town so have alot of friends from here. Overall my friends break down to poultry/pheasant friends, reptile/exotic friends, school/home town friends, family (lots and lots of family I have found), and finally-bald friends. I keep in touch with alot of guys from SBG on facebook that havent visited the site in ages.
I am one of the people that checks it atleast 5 times a day, I play farmville, I have a fan page, all that fun stuff. It has helped me make alot of new friends, thanks to facebook I am planning a trip across the country and have friends places I can stay for a day or so, that way I only have to pay for gas/snacks. I also use my facebook to my advantage, I havent had to pay my phone bill since spring. I have friends that offer to pay my bills for me, I get companies to send me free stuff (managed to get a nice under armour hoody for free last week). It all depends on you personally. Some folks like my brothers have one just because and they might check it once a month.

Everything in moderation, yes. And the "Electrocution" button is a great idea! :ĐĐĐĐĐĐĐĐ

Those people who keep reporting what they actually do are simply naive. It is not the wisest thing to share the details of one's private life with practically the whole world. (Even if you set your profile and stream to be "friends-only", the Big Brother is watching you.) And, there is mostly no real communication or exchange of important or meaningful views and info - rather unimportant everyday things like "I have just arrived from the supermarket!", "We are to visit my mother-in-law in the afternoon!" and things like this. I would really like to understand what it is good for.

I agree that FB may be useful in some cases - for example, getting in contact with someone whom you know from the offline life, but... I'm afraid many of the users are there just to avoid boredom.
(Oh, not to mention the boring white-blue design...)

Most posts are just small talk similar to a short conversation when running into someone on the street. Facebook obviously ain't for everyone ! Most people I know my age aren't on it as they think it's a waste of time. They have children living out of state & the country that they could keep in closer contact with via FB if they weren't so opposed to & intimidated by the new communications technology. They're surprised by my embracing it. I tell them that if you think old you are ! And if you don't keep up you do get passed by ! They'd all think my being on this forum is frivolous too 😄

I had one way back in 2006. I didn't like it as much as MySpace. I deleted it back in Jan of 2010... Sheesh, two years with no Facebook.

I checked my sister's profile and they have my name listed as a "family member" but my name is not clickable... lol

I will get it back soon... just not now.

I do have a Facebook account but since I returned from deployment I may check it ever so often. When I last went on I actually deleted about 40 people from my friends list for various reasons and I'm sure just as many deleted me for no reason. For one, I was getting too many requests from people I didn't know. BTW I get on it once a week and I use a false name for personal reasons. That said, I completely respect those of you who delete or choose not to have FB It was a nice novelty in the beginning but it is becoming a bit overrated....my 0.02

More than a bit overrated. It has just gotten downright boring. And the more I was logging on it seemed that I had less real reason to do so. I know that sounds odd, what I mean is the same headlines over and over for days, then a "FarmVille" notification (I never played FarmVille) about somebody misplacing their ass (donkey) and they need a bag of dried corn to lure the critter back home, blah, blah, blah. I gotta get a life anyway.

I have no use for FB honestly. I've tried it twice & deleted both of those accounts out of frustration & just plain dis interest in what the heck everyone else is doing. I'm not into staying "so" connected with everyone first off, but secondly I think I'm kind of old school & a bit more private than what FB can offer as privacy protection.
This 2nd time around with FB I was just not logging in very often but then heard the latest ways they've come up with to spy on their users & just had to delete based on that alone.

When I first heard that you could find old friends I jumped on it like a duck on a June bug. I found old ones and made some new ones in the little time I've used it. But I'm no addict.
