Title: Dog Lovers
Post by: Arnie on October 03, 2011, 08:58:56 AM
I grew up around Black Labrador Retrievers, but have had various dogs throughout my life...

Recently, I realized I have never been so close to a pet than I am to the Biewer Terrier I have now, Bryan(but we call him Big Guy).

What is your favorite canine breed and why?

Do you have a dog story to share?

Like you I grew up around big dogs (mostly Dobermans and Shepherds), but now have smaller dogs: two Pomeranians.

There are many things to like about this breed, but my top 2 are:

Little Bear and Cozmo:

I love dogs, but I dont really know much about them. I've had two dogs of my own, and they were both cross-breeds, and I loved each of them to death, but Im not a dog expert. And I dont really like big big dogs, I'm more of a small dog kind of guy :D

(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi484.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr205%2Ftropsnew%2Fframe22.jpg&hash=51f5d7f8feb7e6ff68cbb070d97300fb44831648)

This is Clyde. He's 15 years old, and I got him from a rescue shelter in London in 1997 when he was a year old. He is officially the best dog in the world :) Right now, he's fast asleep under my desk, with his chin on my foot. I'm not sure what breed of dog he is, but the general consensus is that he's a Jack Russell possibly mixed with a Doberman or a sausage dog (but I cant think what sausage dogs are officially called). I know he probably looks like a rat to anyone who likes big dogs, but he's the love of my life :)

My other dog was Bonnie, and she died in 2003. She was a Border Collie, and I got her from the same shelter in London back in 1988. She was 7 weeks old and had been abandoned in a rubbish bin (trash can), then rescued and taken to the shelter. She was absolutely adorable and I still miss her every day.

Their names are/were Bonnie and Clyde purely by coincidence. I already had Bonnie, and I wanted a second dog to keep her company, and when I went to the shelter to see what dogs they had, Clyde's name was already Clyde. He was beautiful and friendly and playful, but when I found out his name was Clyde, I knew he was the dog to go for.

I have had Labradors all my life. (Black, Yellow and Chocolate). They have all the traits that I love in a dog and never felt like trying any other breed.

We've had Doberman's, Alma, Zena, Stella and now Irma.  While some who haven't ever known Dobies believe they are mean, those who've had the pleasure of having one of these fine animals know that they are pussy cats, big lovable pussy cats who are if anything too demanding of attention.  And since the types who don't know them might want to come after some of my stuff, I'm not sad about the reputation.

Aww, cute. He reminds of a dog my partner's mom used to have named Oops. She was a really sweet dog too.

Totally true! Dobies are great pets, and their supposed reputation also makes them great guard dogs. I mean, what burglar is going to continue breaking into a home when he sees a Dobie grinning at him on the other side of the glass? *

* True story. I had a Dobie named Velvet who, when hearing someone at the door, would prop herself up so she could look out the window and bare her teeth in what could only be described as a grin. For the uninitiated, it was frightening. It looked like she was thinking "Oh, yes, please come in. It's snack time!" ;)

Thanks :) He is adorable. I dont know what the life expectancy is of dogs like him, but he's 15 so I dont suppose I'll have him for too much longer. When he goes, i think I'll totally crumble.

On average 15 is pretty old. A Vet once told me that the larger the dog the shorter the life span.

:(

I think Bonnie was 13 when she died. She had Cushings Disease. Clyde seems to be doing very well for his age. He's never had anything seriously wrong with him, and he's extremely lively. His hearing is just about zero but apart from that, he seems to be doing well.

I cant bear the thought of losing him though.

Losing a beloved pet can be heartbreaking. I don't know why we put ourselves thru it time after time. The pros obviously outweigh  the cons.

When Bonnie died, I felt like someone hit me over the head with a frying pan. I was so dazed and confused. It took me ages and ages to get over it, and as I said, I still miss her.

Bonnie was quite independent though, whereas Clyde is always by my side, so I think I'll probably take it a lot harder when he dies.

I would never have another dog though. Clyde will definitely be my last.

Gordon Setter owner here, Olin is my 4th in a row.  Great breed if you have the space for them to run and the patience for an eternal puppy.  Also have a Pointer, Astra is a great dog with a personailty that is totally opposite of Olin.  Need to post pics in separate entries.  And yes, they're both shown by their breeders - I go to the shows on occasion but it gets a bit wierd for me...

This picture is of Olin, taken just a year ago when he was one.

I have two Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, Siobhan (age 11 1/2) and Rory (age 10).   This photo is about four years old.  It seems like yesterday that they were puppies; I can't believe how fast the time has gone.  It's really scary because I can't bear the thought of losing them:

I can understand everyone's attachment to their dogs. I grew up with them and have fond memories of each one. Recently we got a dog but after three days it was obvious that allergy issues wouldn't allow up to keep her. Taking her back was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. We all got so attached to her.

We had a Shetland Sheepdog that my daughters named Cinnamon.  She was a great little dog and she was a great companion.  She died about four years ago and we still can't imagine getting another dog to replace her.

We have three dogs.... two SHih-Tzus and a Boston Terrier. All three are great pets and that Boston is the funniest damn dog ever.

I did greyhound rescue for nine years and have a true soft spot for them. I owned three at one time but they all passed over the years.

I love most breeds.

Is it a myth that you have to pay extra home insurance with Dobermans in the house?

For me, I never had to pay more, but I was denied home-owner's insurance from one company because I had a Dobie.

Well, it is not the case for our dogs.  However, property insurance is different in every state so what's true for me might not be for others.  I believe I've heard that some communities have put limitations on some breeds like pit bulls--but I don't know how that works.

I had dogs growing up and all my life, but they were treated like our livestock...kept outside. A nine years ago a bony poor Pit bull came to my home and adopted me. She checked out positive for a big infestation of heart worms. We began the treatment but I couldn't keep her from running around and chasing squirrels and she got sick. So I was forced to keep her inside for the rest of the >month long treatment. This was when I realized what "pet people" where all about when they personified and spoke of love for their dogs and cats. My Pit became part of the family and we were her pack. She loved everybody and loved playing with every dog she met. It was a real time of enlightenment for me. She's gone now and I think of her everyday when I water the Azalea on her grave.

My wife and I are big fans of the Akita. When I was on the force we had 2, a male and a female, as guard dogs for the house. Even though these dogs had no formal guard dog training they foiled a home invasion at my house while I was out of town. Our male was 140 pounds and lived to the age of 12, he was my bestest buddy ever. Our female was 120 and lived to 14. We had to have them put down about 6 years ago and it was the worst day of my entire life. When my buddy's heart stopped it felt like mine did, too. I tear up every time I think about him.
The picture I'm posting is not my buddy but this is exactly how he looked. Imagine a 140 pound version curled up in my lap watching television with me.
We had them cremated and they remain with us. They both are buried in our garden in view of our dining room window.

We now have an Akita that we got from Midwest Akita Rescue not long after we lost our other 2. He was 3 or 4 when we got him (the rescue place wasn't sure of his age) but we've had him for 6 years so he's getting up there. Beautiful dog and extremely friendly, super protective of the grandkids.
When his time comes I'm pretty sure we'll stay with the breed.
The pic I posted here is not our dog but, again, this is exactly how he looks.

My family had all sorts of dogs when I was growing up.  Mostly mutts, a beagle/basset hound mix, and a purebred harlequin Great Dane.  The Great Dane was my favorite.  She lived to be 12 or 13 (avg life expectancy is 8 or 9 I think).  Whenever I decide to have my own dog I'm almost certain I'll get another Dane or some other kind of big dog.

Dogs are one of my favorite things in this world, and I think they know it.  On more occasions than I can count, and to their owners' amazement, I've had otherwise skittish or "aggressive" dogs come to me to be petted.  They invariably say "I've never seen him/her just go up to someone like that."

Dogs and I are on some kind of "level" and I feel like we have an understanding.  Some of my close friends call me "the dog whisperer"  ;D

I've always been a lab guy. I was raised with Missy, a black lab 1974-1986 Chip, another black 1982-1990, and I had my own two Shelby 1998-2003 ( died of a stroke) and my best friend, and service dog Hunter 1998-2008 (died of cancer) I thought I would Never have a dog other than a lab. After Hunter died, I was DESTROYED. I thought I would never go through the pain of losing a dog so would never own one. Well, along came Morgan, I adopted him at a shelter fair I went to with my sister to find a dog for her. I was in my wheelchair full time then and we were walking around the park with multiple rescue groups, came across the Beagle Rescue... ALL of them were jumping all over the place and I noticed one in the back, curled up in a ball, looking sad, I rolled up to the 3' high fence and he slowly got up, and walked over to me, I asked the worker if I could take him out to hold him, she said yes, and put a lead on him and opened the cage. Morgan and I walked to a clear area of the park and I hopped out of my wheelchair. he crawled up into my lap and fell asleep, after licking my face.  HE HAD ME AT THE FIRST LOOK.  I brought him home on SuperBowl Sunday 2009.  I had a party that day and the entire party he laid under my chair, to this moment if I am home, he NEVER leaves my side, even when I go to the bathroom, I have to let him in with me or he whines. I can't even describe our bond. Right now, it's 2:30 am and I am in my recliner and he is on my legs/lap.  I set up a video camera one time and put it to record time-lapse while I was gone, He walks with me to the door whenever I go anywhere. On the 7 hour video, he sat by the door until I came home. If I could take him everywhere, I would. I know every dog owner loves their dog so much, but I never knew a love for an animal like I have for Morgan. Oh, he is 30% Beagle and 70% Boxer.

Now to really tear at your heart strings, Since he was an abandoned rescue, they don't know his exact age but estimate he was born in fall 2008.... I swear if I believed in reincarnation, I would swear he was Hunter come back to me.
