...was the greatest decade for music EVER.

Missed it by a decade. If you ignore the disco nonsense, the 70's rocked!
Though I will concede that the 80's are a close second.
-
The 80's were definitely the best. I have XM radio and it stays on 80's on 8 and Classic Rewind. There is no better music in my opinion. O0
-
Oh its all coming through very clearly now. I can imagine you in silver platform boots, a diamonte waistcoat and LONG curly hair :D :D :D
*runs away fast*

Very obviously a man of impeccable taste.

I guess I liked the late 60's and early 70's best but being in New Orleans we had and still have, the music from "outside the levees", Stones, Doors, etc., but we were and are blessed with an embarrassment of riches in live local music, not only Fats Domino, but many others, Irma Thomas, Dave Bartholomey, Dr. John, the various bands of the Neville Brothers and so much more in the trad jazz tradition. So my favorites aren't from a particular decade but a "gumbo" of all the music, particularly live performances on the street, in clubs, at parties that the local culture provides us. I really like the street music, you just never know when you're going to come on a group playing in the Vieux Carre or at a street party. I was also lucky enough to have an older cousin who gave me his 45 collection, Sun Records and others, with Little Richard and the 50's R&R, Jerry Lee Lewis--from Ferriday, LA and lots of other pre-Beatles groups, and I still have boxes of LP's that need to be converted to a more modern format not only for preservation but for ease of listening. I just couldn't exclude any of it by having a favorite.
-
Both me and a friend had rock star hair and are both SLY now.
I remember both of us actually kept a log of the top 10 so we knew what 45s to investigate.
We made our own DJ shows...usually KISS related.
We didn't like tapes much(other than our own recordings) because we liked being able to set that needle on the record player just right to get the song we wanted...lol.

I am not a big fan of the 80's music. My style of music is anything before the 60's. I cant stand most of the music these days, most of it is a couple words then chorus, couple words and chorus then chorus repeat and a couple more words and chorus then its done. The good old music told stories that you could relate to.

OMG, what were they thinking when they had their hair styled??

Haha. Most of the music from the 80's I have heard is from the corny 80's movies. I do like the sound track from Top Gun but the other stuff is just not my style. Maybe if I was raised listening to it it would different but such is life

More 80's movies with tons of 80's music: Caddyshack, Blues Brothers, Xanadu, Fame, American Pop, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Pink Floyd The Wall, The Last American Virgin, Eddie & The Cruisers, Flashdance, Reckless, Breakin', Footloose, Ghostbusters, Karate Kid, Streets of Fire, Sixteen Candles, Vision Quest, Desperately Seeking Susan, Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire, Weird Science, About Last Night, Running Scared, Pretty In Pink, Beverly Hills Cop, Dirty Dancing, Bright Lights Big City, Purple Rain, Batman...just to name a few. ;)
See, he ^ is someone else with pure class running through his veins :D
The Breakfast Club has to be my favourite of all of those.

Breakfast Club was good, but The Blues Brothers was better.

I've never seen The Blues Brothers. :( I've never seen Sixteen Candles either, which is strange because I always liked Molly Ringwald.

That's some essential viewing that you're delinquent on. :o :o

I know. I can download them from iTunes. My connection here is so slow though :( It takes me 3 hours to download a 50 minute tv program(me) :(
Actually I think Pretty in Pink comes in as my joint favourite, along with Breakfast Club.
Jeez I feel old.

If we can expand the list to include films that didn't include popular songs, then the Back to the Future films are probably my favorites from the 80s. There was also a Rodney Dangerfield pic -- Easy Money -- that isn't as well known as some of his other ones but I think it was one of his best.
Jeez I feel old.
Doesn't seem like that long ago, does it? Try working in an office where the median age is about 27 and you'll quickly feel like a dinosaur. :(

Man, everything Saintc mentioned above are classics...every decade has great tunes I appreciate. The other day I had a craving for Turtles...not the meat. ;)

I agree, BTTF was an excellent series of movies, although as is usually the case, the first was the best.
As for 27 year olds, I have socks that old...

Ah, but they did:
Back to the Future had one of the biggest hit songs of the '80's: "The Power of Love", by Huey Lewis & The News... :)
and Billy Joel's title song to "Easy Money" was also a hit! :)
-
And if memory serves, BTTF 2 also had a pretty big hit (Back in Time, also by Huey Lewis and the News).
Once again, X Man is just SO busted :D :D :D

Was in a BIG HAIR metal band in the 80s
Put out an album and sold about 80,000 records (20,000 short of a gold record).
Go on Google and enter "LETCHEN GREY"
You'll get lots of hits.
Find one with the picture of us on the back of the CD cover, I'm "Robbie Blackmore - Drums" LOL
Some links you can stream some of our songs....pretty cool 25 years later.

Bro, you look much better with a melon on your shoulders. Take it from me!

For me, there were three major albums of the 80s (and I appreciate that these bands might have been one-hit-wonders in the US, but they werent here)
1. Songs from the Big Chair - Tears for Fears
2. Bridge of Spies - T'Pau
3. World Machine - Level 42
-
I have 2996 songs in iTunes, and I'd like to bet 95% of them are from the 80s.
There are only three current acts I can really listen to. Bruno Mars, Leona Lewis, and Adele.
-
That's an eclectic rotation.

That Tears for Fears album was a #1 hit in the US, along with multiple Top 10 hits, but the other two were pretty much one-hit wonders here...with T'Pau (Heart and Soul) and Level 42 (Something About You)

Heart and Soul was a big hit in America in (I think) 1987, yet in the UK, China In Your Hand was a far bigger hit. I liked all of their albums. Carol Decker (the lead singer) has been desperately trying to ressurrect her career for the last couple of years, but failed miserably unfortunately.
As for Level 42... World Machine was like a bible for me.
However my biggest bible was Songs from the Big Chair. That record had such an impact in my (misguided) youth in so many ways, I cant even describe it. That record was my first encounter with Tears for Fears. It was only after I'd discovered it that I discovered The Hurting, which was an even more depressing album. But their other albums (The Seeds of Love, Elemental, Raoul and the Kings of Spain, Everyone Loves a Happy Ending) were highly underrated IMO.
One of my biggest thrills in life: one day, I was flying from New York to London. I was in first class (lucky upgrade), and I was sitting in the same row as Roland Orzabal, the lead singer of TFF.
One of my biggest disappointments in life: I didnt have the guts to tell him what his music had meant to me.
Im such a freakoid.

Listen, we cant all be Donny & Marie fans you know.

Do you guys remember a song called Mary's Prayer, by a group from Scotland called Danny Wilson?
They were a one-hit wonder globally, but that song is probably the greatest one-hit wonder ever recorded (or so I think)

If we're talkin' 80's one-hit wonders from Scotland, then Big Country (In A Big Country) tops my list. :D
For 80's one-hit wonders in general...my fav is probably Animotion (Obsession) O0

I dont blame you. Back then, she was definitely something to look at. My problem came when she opened her mouth.
My first crush was on Lindsay Wagner :o

Me!!

I dont remember that song either.
Donny is still very popular here :-\ I guess its because he's done some stage work here too. I dont think anyone here apart from a few would know who Marie is.
Unfortunately, David Hasselhoff is popular here too. How can anyone who literally cant sing manage to have so many hit records?? Although, it never stopped Madonna.
-
It hasn't stopped Taylor Swift either.
-
I wish I knew who that was :(
I dont like being so far removed so many talentless people.

No, you don't. Trust me.

I just Wiki'd her, and she looks a little familiar.
She reminds me of Joss Stone, who falls into the same category IMO.

what...¿
i know that music right now SUCKS so bad... but music in the 80's early 90's was the best... there is no more creativity and talent...

Im the worlds leading authority on all things D&M :D
As for creativity etc, I think there are a (very) few potentially massive talents around at the moment. IMO, the biggest one is Adele, who I think is staring a life of superstardom in the face. However, to me, the 80s created superstars, whereas the 90s and 00s have created celebrities, which is a different thing altogether. I'm convinced people like Beyonce are popular mainly because they way they wiggle their asses for the camera. Although, Madonna did the same thing in the 80s and she cant sing either.
I do think Adele is one to watch though.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adele_%28singer%29
-
p.s. I also have to mention Amy Winehouse. Hugely talented. Such a shame.

I wouldnt be at all surprised. His hair does look a little rug-like.

I loved, and still love '80s music.
The Smiths, Morrissey, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Modern English, X, ... I could go on and on. Great stuff!!

Simple Minds
One of my favourites :@`

I thnk every decade has it's legends.

I like most of the old classics from the 60's 70's and 80's!
I have a 50 year grade school class reunion coming up next month. It should be a great time. Really looking forward to it.
Music today just isn't the same as it was in the past.
:)
-
Since we're talking 80's I would have to say I liked Journey, Duran Duran, Loverboy, Stryper, Thompson Twins, Bow Wow Wow, REM, The Go Go's, Thomas Dolby, U2, Dexy's Midnight Runners and Men at Work, among others!
-

I never liked Duran Duran. Way too pretty for me. I like Journey although I only discovered them a few months ago :o. Didnt like Thompson Twins, loved REM, Dexy's Midnight Runners and Men at Work, but I've never heard of the others :o
What about Orchestral Manoeuvers (Maneuvers) in the Dark, aka OMD? What about Blondie? Were they/she ever big in America? How about Johnny Hates Jazz? Alison Moyet? Sade?
-

Blondie was plenty big. Alison Moyet, to me, always seemed like a slightly inferior Annie Lennox. Speaking of whom -- the Eurythmics. What about Grace Jones, the (English) Beat (and successors), Talking Heads?
-
Johnny Hates Jazz had a big hit in the US in the spring of 88, then faded. Simply Red was popular at the same time. Sade was big in the mid-80's. She was dubbed "the yuppies' favorite jazz musician" by one of the rags.
-
Never heard of The Beat :(
I never noticed any similarity between Alison and Annie. Alison has had a much longer and much more successful career than Annie (and a lot more varied), and vocally they dont seem similar to me at all.
Talking Heads were ok. What about Tangerine Dream? Culture Club (or even just Boy George). Genesis? Depeche Mode? Pet Shop Boys, Fine Young Cannibals, Simply Red, and I know I already mentioned them, but I have to mention my favourites again...Tears for Fears :D
-
Johnny Hates Jazz's big hit in 88 was Shattered Dreams :) I always think of Fort Lauderdale when I hear that song :o
Sade has been popular here since around 1984. I think she only ever had one or two big hits, but she's been consistently successful, and she has the distinction of being the best selling African artist in the UK. Whoopee :-X
OMG, I'm going to have to listen to Johnny Hates Jazz now.
-
Never heard of The Beat :(
<snip>
Fine Young Cannibals
Er, Fine Young Cannibals was one of the successor bands to the Beat. The other was General Public. Now they tour under various combinations: the Beat (US), the Beat (UK), Dave Wakeling and various assorted studio musicians, etc.
-
I dont know any of those, apart from FYC :(
-
I never noticed any similarity between Alison and Annie. Alison has had a much longer and much more successful career than Annie (and a lot more varied), and vocally they dont seem similar to me at all.
Both broke out with heavily blues-influenced vocals over synth-pop backgrounds. I think Alison Moyet dropped out of currency in the US post Yaz(oo). In the US, at least I'd say, Annie Lennox as a soloist is way more widely known than Alison Moyet. Maybe that's a US vs. UK thing.
-
Yes I think so. Everyone here knows both ladies, but I'd say Alison is generally more popular here. I've always had the impression that people here tend to get bored with music styles very quickly, and Alison has been quite flexible in the things she's done (punk, pop, theatrical, French language, etc) whereas Annie's stuff all seems quite similar to me, so maybe others have picked up on that too.
Alison also didnt do herself any harm by playing Mama Morton in 'Chicago' a few years ago. That really boosted her appeal too, plus she's done quite a few things with Jennifer Saunders (writer and star of Absolutely Fabulous), which has also helped.
I prefer Annie's voice to Alison's although I listen to Alison more than Annie because her styles are more varied.
And as we've mentioned Yazoo, we should also mention Erasure :) Not sure if they were big in the US or not though.
-
And as we've mentioned Yazoo, we should also mention Erasure :) Not sure if they were big in the US or not though.
I don't think I went to a party in college (1988-1992) where I didn't dance to Chains of Love.
However, admitting full ignorance, I don't know much more of their stuff, or which things were them vs. Yaz or Depeche Mode.
-
All their stuff seemed to melt into one for me :)
How about The Communards and Bronski Beat? Were they popular there?
-

Didn't Sade suffer a nervous breakdown and had to take a long break but is back now.

Annie Lennox was big over here..As I type this I can hear "Little Bird" in the background.

I still adore Annie Lennox. I doubt just about anybody but me and a few other remembers Bronski Beat.

Not that I know of. I seem to remember some kind of shoplifting story from a few years ago, but I'm not sure about a breakdown.
