Title: Classic TV
Post by: Razor X on September 12, 2011, 06:55:41 PM

And funny convo about the tv shows guys!  The earliest TV shows I remember are Family Ties, the Golden Girls, Magnum PI and Saved By The Bell.

I thought I'd start a separate thread on this one, since I can remember shows way older than this.   :-[  .  I have vague recollections of watching the original Hawaii Five-O with my mom.  My dad would sometimes work late and she'd let me stay up until he got home.  I remember the opening credits and the theme song but not much else.  I also had a major thing for Marlo Thomas when I was about 3 or 4.

A lot of the shows I really remember watching as a young kid were daytime reruns of shows whose prime time runs I was too young to remember:  The Lucy Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Beverly Hillbillies and Bewitched are the ones that immediately come to mind.

What are the earliest shows you can remember watching?

Boomtown, Romper Room, The 3 Stooges, The Farmer's Daughter, My 3 Sons, Uncle Gus, The Flintstones (in prime time!), Jonny Quest.

I remember Romper Room but I don't think I've ever heard of Boomtown or Uncle Gus.

Both Boomtown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boomtown_(1956_TV_series)) and Uncle Gus were local to New England.

I remember when we lived in Los Angeles, which was around 1969-1970, we were all forced to watch the Tom Jones show on a Thursday evening because my mother would have died (apparently) if she didnt get to see the show.

Oh gosh, so did I (maybe I was a few years older). I thought she was totally hot, and I loved that she had that kite.

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=86383

Couple years later I watched the show again and heard her whining "But, Donald!" and thought to heck with that chick. Then years later learned that she was married to Phil Donahue.

(She's been on the brain lately since I read that Alyssa Milano just had a son and named him Milo Thomas.)

Marlo Thomas is Danny Thomas' daughter.  She was quite the bomb back in the day before she made the ill-advised decision to marry Phil Donahue.   !*u%e

Was Little House on the Prairie big in the US? I know it was made in the US, but it was absolutely HUGE here, but just like Baywatch and several other shows, I'm wondering if it was more popular here than it was there.

For me it was Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Six Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman, Wonder Woman, Incredible Hulk (I worshiped Lou Ferrigno), and reruns of the Brady Bunch, I Love Lucy, Bob Newhart, and the Mary Tyler Moore show, to name a few.

In the U.S., there are several retro-themed TV networks on the air. Antenna TV, MeTV and RTV (Retro TV). Depending where you live, they may be available on an over-the-air local station. It looks like people want a return to classic TV. I know I do!

How about Sesame Street and Mork & Mindy? They were very popular here, as was the police show with Erik Estrada and the geeky looking blond guy. Happy Days was a BIG success in the UK, but I dont believe Laverne & Shirley was ever aired here, and neither was Joanie Loves Chachi (thankfully). That was taking things one step too far :D

Soap (the show with Billy Crystal) was very very very controversial here but also very popular.

How about Rhoda? The people of the UK never warmed to the MTM show, but Rhoda was a big success.

Dallas was HUGE here, as was Dynasty. Knots Landing too, but not quite as huge. There was also a similar show called Savannah which was popular here for a while but I dont know what happened to it. It seemed to have a very short life.

Seinfeld was aired here but I dont think it was very popular. I never saw it. Speaking purely for myself, I dont understand American humour (humor) too well unfortunately, and American comedy all looks and sound the same to me, especially sitcoms.

And it's vice versa over here. British comedy is a lot like watching paint dry. Although I do get a chuckle out of Eddie Izzard.

Oh yes, To The Manor Born was outstanding.  I love Britcoms, and aside from Manor, I would never get tired of watching:
Fawlty Towers
The Young Ones
Keeping Up Appearances
Ab Fab (Series 1-3; the later ones were a little too mean-spirited for my tastes)

Another Britcom that I really liked -- and I've never met anyone on either side of the Atlantic who remembers it -- was Two's Company with Elaine Stritch and Donald Sinden.  She played an American writer living in London and he was her oh-so-proper and oh-so-disapproving English butler.  It ran from 1975 to 1979 on ITV and was shown on A&E here in the US in the early 80s.   They didn't make that many episodes, which may account for why it isn't better remembered, but I found the entire series on DVD a few months ago and bought it. It still cracks me up.

Oh yeah, the primetime soaps ruled in the late 70's-late 80's with:

Dallas...which spun off Knots Landing
Dynasty...which spun off The Colbys
Falcon Crest
Flamingo Road
And less campy, but soapy nonetheless:
St. Elsewhere
Hill Street Blues
L.A. Law

And continued into the 90's with shows like:
90210 which spun off Melrose Place which spun off Models, Inc.
Dawson's Creek which spun off Young Americans
Felicity

And I remember Savannah as well!

Allo Allo was very popular here. For me, it was funny for a while, but every episode was basically moulded around the same joke, and I thought it became quite old quite quickly!

The other show which I felt the same about, and which I think aired in America too, was 'Keeping Up Appearances'. There's only so many times you can tell the same joke, especially when it wasnt all that funny to begin with :(

As for Three's Company - it was only a US show because it had been Americanized :D It was based on the UK's very own Man About The House, which was seriously successful here in the 70s, and spawned a few spin offs, including Robins Nest (Threes a Crowd) and George & Mildred (The Ropers)

I remember Flamingo Road too, and LA Law. I remember Hill Street Blues too, but I never watched it.

Did anyone mention The A Team? :D

X Man, I think you might be incorrect wrt this :o

Twos company was a terrible British comedy. Three's Company was the show based on Man About The House. That link you gave is to Twos Company (crap English comedy). Three's Company is the thing with John Ritter and the two girls I've never heard of

What was the British comedy that gave birth to the American Version called "Friends".

I dont think there was one. I think Friends was born in the USA. The only similar British comedies that spring to mind are 'Cold Feet' and 'Coupling', but I think they were probably inspired by Friends.

"Coupling", that's the one. OK, I thought it was the other way around. Funny show. It was a bit sexier than the American version.

Yeah I know. Generally speaking, shows here tend to be a little more 'open' :o than American shows. We have a thing called 'watershed', and 'watershed' happens at 9pm every night. Once the clock strikes 9, just about anything goes.
