Hello Sly Guys,
It has been awhile. I always come to you for good advice, so here we go. I've just been diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma on my face. I've also had several AKs through the past few years.
I need a good, wide brim hat. I hate hats. I look goofy in hats, but the time has come. What do you recommend?

Hi Max :)
Sorry to hear about your condition :(
'Stetson' springs to mind. I think anyone can carry off a stetson :D

Fortunately even SCC are almost always totally curable. I grew three of those--are you having removed with Moh's? Although not on my face the surgeries left no perceptible scars and weren't uncomfortable--except that there is a wait after the first cut before they do the fancy stuff to close the wound so that it's cosmetically attractive.
Hats--still only wear them if the sun is just too hot but I use a lot of UV-A & UV-B sunscreen. And, regular visits to see what other things my skin can grow :D.

Sorry to hear that Max. That Whittman website looks very promising. I'm a Kangol kinda guy myself and they wont do. Good luck.

My favorite hats are by Arizona Shady Hats. They donate a percentage of every sale to skin cancer therapy. PLUS, they are local to me, made in the use and guarantee their hats for life. "If our hat wears out before your head does, we replace it" and they DO, I had a brim of one of my hats go bad and called them, the next day I had a brand new one at my doorstep via FedEX. No questions asked.
Tell them Gimpy sent ya, you might get a discount.

Saintc, I will have a Mohs procedure on October 17. It is good to hear that you history has been non reoccurring.

I wear my old "boonie" hat when I'm in Panama or out kayaking, but have thought about upgrading to one of the new types. The hats with the tall crowns that are made of a stiff mesh material that allows air to flow. Best of luck to you.

PM me if you have any questions. Most of the procedure is waiting--literally sitting in the room waiting. If nothing else bring a book or some work to take up anywhere from an hour to two depending on the circumstances.

I saw some of those $80 Tilley's in a store last week, nice hats but they are sure proud of them.

They sure are expensive but nice looking. Don't own one myself maybe someday. b!n&

Look for a "Tilly Hat", made in Canada, with fabric that protects against the sun rays that cause skin problems. It goes in the clothes washer. Several wide brim styles. My dermatologist recommended it. Expensive, but casual and stylish. Also, there's a spot in the crown to write you name and adress; if lost and someone returns to Tilly, they will forward to you, i think.

sorry to hear about what you're going thru...
i love my columbia hats... http://beta.columbia.com/accessories-mens-hats/accessories-men-hatsHeadwear,default,sc.html?prefn1=filterColor&prefv1=Blue|Brown|Purple|Tan
i use columbia titanium hats when i'm trecking on a bike, or walking outside for a long time... they're rated SPF 30 or something... they don't have anything listed right now, but shop around ebay and stuff...
also, nike makes some great running and golf hats that are SPF rated as well... light weight, and wick away moisture... great hats and look great too... last forever...
