Title: Schick Hydro 5
Post by: Chavster on September 07, 2011, 04:31:57 AM
From what I've read on this board, Schick Hydro 5 is a good razor to use, but I've been quiet jealous for the past few days because I'd never heard of Schick, never seen Schick, and cant buy Schick here.

But a little bit of Googling on my part made me realize that what you guys on the west side of the water call Schick, we guys on the east side of the water call Wilkinson Sword, and I just bought my very first Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5  :D

And I'm about to use it  O:O I'll let you know what I think after the deed has been done

On a scale of one to ten (one being steak and kidney pie, ten being sex), I'd give the Hydro 5 a nine  :@`

Whatever it's called it's a really good tool, IMO, for scraping the grape and peeling the peach.

I'll have to try it - I like the Gillette Fusion for the smooth shave it gives.  I'll have to compare the Shick Hydro 5 to the Fusion and see if there's a difference.

By the way, the Wilkinson Sword brand was sold here years ago, but I haven't seen it recently.  I guess Shick acquired them...

I think it might be the other way around (although I could be wrong). Either way, its a great product :) :) Give it a try!

I think I need to retract what I said  yesterday. I used the Hydro 5 again last night, and it was worse than the Headblade, from the nicking/bleeding point of view. It was a seriously unpleasant experience.

I'll give it one more try in a couple of days but I think it'll be going in the trash, along with my two headblades, when I can figure out where I put them.

Ouch Sorry to hear that . I've never cut myself with the Hydro 5 or Fusion & used them many many times.

I've never had a single problem with Fusion, but Hydro 5 really HURT  :-[

It could be that I was pressing down a little too hard. I think maybe Hydro 5 is a little heavier than Fusion, so maybe I didnt need to apply as much pressure, and I guess having five blades makes a difference too

Still, I survived the experience :D

GSGUK,mate as with any razor you do not apply pressure, let the razor do the work, i have been using the hydro for face shaving ever since it went on sale in the uk, and i think its a hundred times better than any other razor on the market. as for headshaving the headblade has got to be the go to tool, again use no pressure, use sensor blades [double or tripple]and you will get a bone close shave. O0 O0

I know :) My problem is that I have paws like a polar bear, and its almost impossible for me to not apply pressure. Going on the first time I used it, it was excellent, but I might have been in too much of a rush the second time. I'll persevere though, I'll try it a few more times before I decide I like it (or not, as the case may be :))

Yup, no pressure and perhaps shaving with the grain a few times to get used to it.  O0

I always go with the grain first, no matter which blade I use. I find what works best for me is to 'heat and wet' my head (either with hot towels, or in the shower, or in the bath, or all three!), then shave with the grain. Then I wrap my head in a wet/warm towel again for 20-30 minutes (not too attractive but I live alone, so who cares?), then I shave against the grain.

I think one thing I do need to do is to spend some money on a bigger/thicker handle for Fusion blades. My hands are seriously big, and I sometimes find it difficult to hold a regular Fusion razor, and the Hydro 5 is even thinner, so I need to dust my wallet off and buy something meaty I can get my hand around.

Suggest you look in the Head Shaving category under what's your routine.  Hundreds of variations on what everyone has tried.  One thing that makes a big difference for me is when I put the conditioner on my beard, I also rub some of it on my stubbly scalp, then leave it there and don't rinse it before shaving.  Add a little baby oil or shaving oil and then the Headslick with a brush--super comfortable, and I don't press on the "first pass."  I put a little more oil then use what's left in the brush for a second pass with the blade--Hydro five!  Always comfortable, always peeled peach smooth, no nicks.

There's something about baby oil that gives me the willies. I dont know what it is, but as soon as I rub it onto my skin I feel like I need to drive to the nearest car wash, get out of the car and put myself under the brushes. Eww.

It's the oil, not so much that it's baby oil.  Wal-Mart has a brand Shave Secret, and I'm sure if you run a search for shaving oil there's a brand in the UK--it gives some extra lubrication.  It's washed off anyway with the soap content of the shave creme, so you can save the car wash and possible arrest for odd public behavior.   ;)

Oh I'd never get arrested for that. I'd be in jail all the time :D

I'm so pleased I'll be taking my one and a half empty suitcases to Vegas in December. Sounds like I need to add Walmart to my list of places to shop.
