It isn't only dogs, (cats exempted)  Humans, when they really care (love) another human,  feel the same.  Only longer.   
Wonder what my neighbor will handle it, when Blue dies??  Or how Blue will handle it if Mike dies?    Wonder about a spouse.
Been there, done that.

As someone that has had Labradors around me for many many years I can understand. God bless them both.
